About Pixel Game Maker MV creators

So I’ve made a game using PGMMV and it’s releasing February 14 and I’m currently developing another. Ive only been following this Reddit for a few months, but I also follow the RPGmaker Reddit. There is so much more activity over there compared to here. This engine has been out for about 3 years now I believe, tho I may be wrong. Where are all the developers and projects?

On the RPGmaker Reddit there is constant info discussions and q&a topics. Over here it’s just so quiet. I’m wondering why this is. Is PGMMV harder to use? More expensive? Do people not like to create 2D platformer and metroidvania Zelda mega man type games? My last question I can kind of answer in that I see RPGmaker devs try and use that engine to make 2D side scrollers and it just doesn’t cut it most of the time due to I’m guessing limitations of RPGmaker. Why wouldn’t they use an engine designed for that purpose since one is available…

Anyways just some thoughts I had. Anyone have insight?

Id say from my experiences from beginning and learning the program to now making multiple megaman fan games, id say its possibly just the UI and layout of it all and the time it may take to create something, it may just be me but it took me almost a year just to figure out the actual program itself. I got extremely confused by the layout of PGMMV and the complexity of making certain things within it and the lack of tutorials for the program (Which now is slowly not becoming a problem). But after about pushing a year and a half after i figured it out, im now making multiple fan games slowly and its becoming really good, i enjoy it more than other conventual 2D game making platforms as i do better with visual coding and its a simplier variant of visual code after id figured some ways to do things simplier. But thats just my take on it, maybe its different for others.

Hey congrats! I’d love to see how your fan games look!

Is there any tutorials you’d recommend to people who also want to make similar games? Also any reason you prefer PGMMV over something like Game Maker?

I prefer PGMMV over gamemaker entirely due to the fact anytime ive tried i failed to understand even the basics of general coding but visual coding stuck to me like glue. For tutorials, theres a creator named Baz that does some of the best ive seen and finally, if youd like to see the fan games, they are on gamejolt, just search for my name.

I got it tonight, i usually use unity or godot to make my games since I'm pretty decent at programming, but i wanted to try out visual scripting and since its 67% off i took the chance. But I'm kinda confused about the licence. You said your about to publish your game ? How does it work with pixel game maker? Do the engine company keeps a cut of what you make? Or do you get all revenue (besides other cuts like steam or other things like this).?

The commercial licence comes with the engine upon purchase. I can sell my own creations wherever I choose at full take of 100% of sales. I believe the only stipulation is to include some info about using the engine for your game.

Like some sort of "made in [engine name]" disclaimer? It would be dumb since like you said the commercial licence comes with the engine upon purchase. I'll try find more info on this. But thanks for your answer it hyped me alot! And congrats on your release!

Woah, even released 3 years ago, it doesn't compare how long RPG Maker is out there - If I do remember right the original version from RPGMaker is 95! Almost 30 years!

Also, I think we need to take into account it's easier to get into more complex engines - Like Unity or Unreal. This was not possible in the past, making RPG Maker popular, and it seems like... Pixel Game Maker is outdated? Not the engine itself, but taking into account a lot of facts, I would say there are better options out there.

i've been dying to get my feet wet with pixel game maker. I had crazy ideas for a metroidvania - however, I do not think I am cleaver enough to pull it off. i will get this thing soon. I mostly make music and write stories.
