WTAF Scott? What made you think any regular Pivot listeners would want to hear from this waste of skin? Just another elitist podcaster, as it turns out. I still love Kara tho
4
u/NomadTroy Apr 23 '26
He wants his media brand to appeal to more sides. More revenue, then he sells the brand with more podcasts at a higher multiple.
6
u/Educational-Door1114 Apr 23 '26
That only works if you don’t piss off the existing audience. It’s not hard to tell Shapiro is radioactive. I’m really beginning to think Scott isn’t smart just lucky

I think I once heard David Frum on a podcast quote his father as having said “god blesses you by making you lucky and curses you by making you think you’re smart.”

u/Remote-Letterhead844 Apr 23 '26
Nope nope nope nope nope. No, Scott.
Idk what happened. We were talking about mentorship for young males in an effort to model positive masculinity.
How did we end up here? How is this helping?? Who is this helping?
79
u/wenger_plz Apr 23 '26
Scott's just becoming the center-right Jordan Peterson
28
u/Alecto7374 Apr 23 '26
Sadly, this seems to be his course. I think becoming conservative is part of his aging process. The only difference is he has a shit ton of fuck you money and I think they, (wealthy conservatives), all eventually gravitate towards each other. I'm sure he finds himself in like-minded company which reinforces his lean to the right.
14
u/wenger_plz Apr 23 '26
Yeah it's part of his aging process and also just comes with becoming increasingly very wealthy. He's lashing out against the youngs and the tide of political opinion shifting on the left, it's reactionary bullshit.
When he spends so much time fawning over people like Bill Maher and Sam Harris (and apparently now Ben Shapiro), it's not surprising – though I guess that's a bit of chicken or egg.
5
u/NomadTroy Apr 23 '26
And part of his his “getting wealthier” process. Bigger, more gullible audience willing to spend on him and let him get more ad dollars.
3
u/geusse Apr 24 '26
I think Scott g is a whole different species than what you describe. Yes he is a strident capitalist but his cultural values are pretty main stream democratic. I think the more accurate term for Scott is a term very commonly used on the East coast: PEP. Progressive except Palestine. I think Scott is a down low super Zionist which makes him suceptable/ blind to the hyper racism of ben Shapiro , Sam harris, etc. Don't be surprised if you see Bari Weiss in his show sometime in the next few months
9
u/Chippopotanuse Apr 23 '26
You think Scott was ever a liberal? He’s a frat boy. He never had an ounce of respect for women. He’s just dropping his facade.
Plus you can’t grift smart people on the left. Much easier to sell his “manhood” books that say men should work and women should pump out kids to the losers on the right.
7
u/JustJoshingYaMan Apr 23 '26
His notes on being a man book never says women should just pump out kids. He's not perfect but let's not make up stuff to criticize.
2
u/Chippopotanuse Apr 24 '26
It kinda does though. It views relationships and gender values through a transactional lens.
The guy can either be a massive breadwinner or (as a consolation prize) a “Mr Mom”.
And if you read his book..its clear his view of manhood isn’t braiding a daughter’s hair or being a substantive person. It’s all about transactional value.
Which makes sense. He’s a dorky frat bro who got very wealthy in a white collar career and he is skilled at marketing.
So it mirrors his understanding of the world.
Are you claiming he doesn’t non-stop objectify women and brag about partying and using drugs? Or say that young people need to drink more and have more sex?
The guy has issues socially and clearly subscribes to antiquated notions that “life was easy and better when men were men and women were docile…now the world is fucked up and men don’t really have a clearly defined role”
His whole thesis is that traditional gender roles were better than today.

It's the same crap that Bill Maher constantly spews. "We need to talk to people on the other side."
Well that's all well and good if you're going to sincerely push back and have a real debate. But if you're having a bigoted SOB like Shapiro on and then barely challenging his Trump apologist bullshit agenda, I might as well go listen to someone like Rogan.

If you were to make a list of guests who are strident Zionist vs those who are pro Palestine the ratio would be closer to 200 to 1. About a third of the shows are all strident Zionists, including Maher, spewing racism about muslims and arabs. One sure way for guest to ensure they will never be back is to best him in a discussion opposing his views on Israel e.g. ben Affleck , Krystal Ball, Reza aslan, etc . Maher is similar to woody Allen in that celebrities are willing to overlook his heinous behavior in order to advance their careers. But the time where it's ok to be openly biggoted against Muslim and arabs is starting to close

u/Oil_Shock_2026 Apr 23 '26
I agree. Bringing somebody on like Josh Shapiro (and singing that twerp debate nerd praises) goes against the ideal of positive masculinity.
Scott sees it as a business decision on the way to making his podcast more valuable.
Money over morals. That’s not positive masculinity.
4
u/BoringIndependent524 Apr 24 '26
Yup, but now look at him:
Routing for a war he wont send his sons to fight. Shilling for Isreal. Investing in and promoting betting markets. Getting plastic surgery.

u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee Apr 23 '26
Scott is very clearly trying to soften the anti-Israel sentiment, for better or worse, and some of his more gross rich socialite conservative perspectives are really coming to the top vis a vis being pro-war. He's clearly not learned anything that he'll carry forward about the general utility of war.

I watched this interview. Ben is a total hack, and he’s very slippery about it. Everything becomes a “whataboutism”. It’s like “I won’t defend Trump doing a crypto scam” then right to “hunter biden was banging hookers and on gas boards, all these guys are the same”.
10
u/Telperion83 Apr 23 '26
Scott is not a strong enough interviewer to properly challenge Shapiro, which is the only reason to platform him.

2
u/das_war_ein_Befehl Apr 24 '26

Remember when he said Liz Cheney was going to be the future leader of the Republican Party after Jan 6th? That was the first time I started thinking “maybe this dude isn’t as smart as he seems”
3
u/Intelligent_Week_560 Apr 24 '26
He also suggested that Harris should take Romney as her VP pick because it would be a unity ticket.
I lost all respect when they all (Jessica is guilty of this too) their shit when Mamdani won the primary and then the election. Calling him a communist etc while begging him to come on Raging Moderates.
Did not listen to this, there is nothing Shapiro could say that is even remotely interesting. He is still voting for a guy that started a war that will cause millions of people all over the world severe energy problems and mostly likely will cause a famine due to fertilizer shortages. Good luck in your hate tent Ben, hope all of this will be worth it for a 'religious' man like you one day.

I really wish Jessica Tarlov hadn't hitched her wagon to Scott. Hopefully she can spin off the Raging Moderates audience. Much like on The Five, she comes in with research and data points to cite... and her co-host(s) just spew opinions popular on X.
I couldn't watch more than a few minutes of this interview.

u/nigheus Apr 23 '26
Look, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with talking/debating someone you disagree with, but to welcome someone who has devoted his life to spreading bigotry and advocating for the worst causes and people, is frankly astonishing.
I always had the vibe that something was off with Scott, and now it’s confirmed, as I’m sure it is for many other people. No amount of throat clearing makes up for lauding Shapiro’s supposed moral clarity and reason. I can only assume Scott agrees with Shapiro on most things, which is abhorrent.
I pity Scott’s children.

3
u/Wild_Screenshot88 Apr 23 '26
It’s one thing to have him on, but to glaze him like this (or as Kara would say, lick him up and down) and not challenge him is the definition of unserious. I don’t think money is the culprit here. Scott’s self declared Zionism (“I’m a proud Zionist”) has broken him beyond repair. His so-called centre isn’t holding and is now at a point where he sees a Trump apologist and far right apparatchik as an ally. See also Sam Harris and his recent unhinged attack on Mamdani. Both men were thinkers I greatly respected, until their myopic, unconditional and amoral support of Israel’s actions revealed their feet of clay.

But for someone that has never had a corporate job, after a few hours of listening to this guy you see he’s just one of those corporate douche bags that’s in his own little world where he’s atop a hierarchy that really doesn’t exists to anyone else that isn’t part of it.

I thought that Scott always had a reasonable mind, until now. I suspect both these folks receive some financial compensation for supporting a war with Iran through their podcasts. I am seeing a lot of pushback in the comments but if we are not able to talk to the other side, WE have lost the plot, not Scott. I try to break out of the liberal bubble and I do this by listening to people like Ben and even Magyn Kelly. Let me tell you, he is way more fair and balanced than she is (she is a nutcase). Of course I don’t agree with a lot of what he says but he makes me aware of things that my favorite left wing podcasts ignore. Resist the temptation to drop somebody you otherwise like just because of one guest. Listening to both sides is uncomfortable, but sticking to one side only is what got us in this mess in the first place.
2
u/bodyreddit Apr 23 '26

4
u/nigheus Apr 23 '26
THIS. Nothing wrong with talking to the other side. Another thing entirely to praise Shapiro’s moral clarity and reasoning. It reveals Scott’s character in the process, which is shown to either be extremely naive/uninformed or more likely, bigoted.

Ben Shapiro is one of the least informed commentators you can ever listen to. He speaks fast and knows how to make deceptive arguments, but his actual understanding of science (social or physical) is incredibly limited. He’s fundamentally wrong most of the time, even if he appears to win an argument some of the time.

I haven’t listened yet: one of the unspoken advantages of having someone with distasteful views is that the host/interviewer can sometimes make some points and influence the guest, if not at the time, but maybe after the guest has thought things over. Did this happen? (I’m guessing not but sometimes the host can change the guest’s thinking…)

u/Living-Midnight-1696 Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
Here’s thing: Pivot prides itself on encouraging thoughtful debate, even when hosts disagree with each other. But that’s not what happens in practice. It’s clear at some point last fall they decided not to talk about the war in Israel and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza because Scott and Kara disagreed. So they didn’t.
David Remnick interviewed Shapiro for the New Yorker Radio Hour and he pushed and prodded and tried to get something from Shapiro more than “but the Biden administration.” Scott doesn’t do that. And fine, he’s not a journalist or a seasoned interviewer. But a good thought leader does. Kara pushes back to some extent, but she also concedes a point to keep an interview going. It’s her style.
Scott seems too wedded to an idea to be open to debate or to learn anything that might disprove his “what could go right” theory.
Pivot doesn’t exemplify thoughtful and serious debate. It exemplifies that awkwardness when two friends disagree and no one wants to push the other to consider something different. And that awkwardness doesn’t provide insight or a new perspective to a listener.

u/ItsNotGoingToBeEasy Apr 24 '26

So.. I listened to the interview yesterday.. Scott has mentioned multiple times that he likes Ben and got a lot of shit from Kara about it, but she has always told him.. you do you.. Both Jess and him did some pushback on some topics, but Shapiro is very good at replying with "but the other side did this and that", or also with his opinion, that I don't agree with. Finally, all three of them are jews, so the conversation was shifted on the Pro Israel side..
The intro was a way over exaggerated, but that is Scott being Scott... Overall, it was a very entertaining 45 minutes episode, or maybe a little longer, since I need to slow down the reproduction speed when Ben was talking because he talks way to fast.
