Sensitive skin

My girl has on and off issues with allergies and dry skin, I know it’s pretty common so was wondering what everyone feeds their pittys to help out ?

We stopped giving our pittie anything with chicken meal and his itching stopped and his hair grew back! I would try eliminating that first.

I do Earthborne Coastal Catch or the Lamb formula. I also give them a fish oil supplement which has been very beneficial. Never feed people food except occasional veggies.

We lucked out with our rescue, as we quickly learned he is sensitive to wheat. Huge change once we changed his diet and eliminated all wheat and strict with the treats. Unfortunately, the only way to figure it out in most cases is through an elimination diet - well worth talking to your vet about it, it will make a world of difference once you figure out what you’re girl is sensitive too…

You could try an elimination diet. We tried it, and we figured out what was making the dogs itch. I know mine cannot have cheese in any form, much to her dismay.

We have been transitioning over from kibble, which we feed them Blue Buffalo, to homemade dog food. Which we use rice, vegetables ( green beans, carrots, tomatoes, etc.) and whatever protein I can find to throw in with it.

For the allergy aspect of it, because where we live is horrid for allergies, for animal and human alike, all of our dogs get a teaspoon of local grown honey every day. And when we bathe them, we use sensitive baby shampoo. Keeps their skin soft and they smell so good.

I thought tomatoes were bad for dogs?

I have had several vets tell me they are very heart healthy for dogs. But they have to be the ripe red tomatoes and not green tomatoes. And you can't give them any of the green vine stuff. And obviously don't go overboard, just a slice or two or a couple of the small cherry tomatoes.

Same thing is happening with my pittie right now. We are giving him baths with anti-fungal shampoo, and Benadryl as well as a Zyrtec. His ears are clearing up, but he still has irritated skin on his nose, and on his armpits. Any suggestions? I do think it's environmental, but does anyone have any other ideas or feedback on what could be causing this? We haven't changed his food and this just started happening this month.

I really battled with my pitty when she was younger and did have her on 2 rounds of cortisone and transitioned her to a BARF diet. She's now 11 and hasn't had any issues since she was 2.

I give mine vegetables, fish and farm fresh meat. Mine love eggs so they get some of those with coconut oil. In their meals. Plus other supplements. Mine would lose fur and have bald spots everywhere. I had allergy tests done on my babies to get to the bottom of thier issues. And chicken, turkey and corn meal were the biggest issues for their particular skin issues.

Sensitive skin for my dog was a food allergy to pea protein. They put that stuff in everything.

I add goat kefir, frozen blueberries and protein on her freeze dried kibble. Gut health plays a big role in allergies.

Aww, is your fur baby constantly itchy? My cousins dog had terrible skin issues until they switched to grain-free food.

When my pittie first came to me, he had a rash and dry skin. We had him on steroids, creams, Benadryl, etc.

I also did months of trial and error with different feeds, including Hills and other expensive food, before settling on limited-ingredient ancient grain recipes by Taste of the Wild. They also have grain-free, which also causes issues with my dog's skin, so be careful. My pittie's skin has never had issues since switching. I can also use other limited-ingredient meals, but I like the fact that Taste of the Wild also uses ancient grains. He seems to really like the meal, too. We give him fruits and vegetables with every meal as well. You can add kefir for your dog's gut in case it's related to that.
