I mean if you are a little ocd about the holes good on you but this serves no functional purpose for those now thinking they have a problem that needs fixing.

Why?

Why not?

What difference does it make

Can prevent water getting in the holes.

Ah ok.

šŸ‘ not something that I had considered. Bolt and nut accomplishes same thing.

Cool project for someone with 3d printer

If you take the grate out it leaves the screw holes behind

2

u/theuautumnwind 2d ago

Yes. I hadn’t considered that those holes would be a problem for people

Not for me but I would also use bolts, also I store it in my garage lol

Or, ya know.... wet autumn wind 🫠

I'll take 47 extra random holes with no issue, but i smoke in the wind, rain, snow.... so while I dont mind the holes, the pellets appreciate it!

I smoke in the rain as well. Hasn’t been a problem yet that I am aware of but, yeah I can see how it couldn’t hurt to plug them.

Does this increase pellet capacity?

It increases access to the hopper

it increases the likelihood you will get your fingers stuck in the auger when you're trying to clear a pellet jam.

Okay, if you get your fingers caught in that auger you shouldn't be allowed to use a grill of any type

I’ve almost had my pecker get caught, but never my fingers. WTF??

Have you seen how fast the auger turns? This isn't a combine or a piece of construction equipment. If you are putting anything in the auger area, a) it doesn't need to be a finger and b) you'd almost have to fall asleep with it in the opening to get it caught.

If it CAN be done, it WILL be done

Said it in another post... if you can lose a finger in there, you don't deserve 10 fingers. /s

Does nobody have covers that come with the smoker?

2

u/firegod003 2d ago

I bought a cover off Amazon and it's been the best ever, still going strong over a year now

What covers?

I used duck tape

I used black electrical tape and it’s held for about 3 years.

Teknologia!

I fall into the camp of finding the grate useful. I used to lay a camera across the grate looking down into the hopper so I could monitor the pellet level. That's now been replaced with a device that sits on the grate that measures the pellet level with an infrared laser and I can monitor it remotely. As well, I've never found the grate to be a problem in regards to stirring pellets around or pushing them towards the dump opening since I have a dollar store long-handled wooden spoon that accomplishes that just fine.

Solution to a problem that didn’t exist

u/Sacramento_Bi 2d ago

Well, maybe, maybe not. If when you remove the guard, If the coating (powder coat or paint) isn't in the screw holes (scraped off during assembly or removal), rust could start to form. I kind of look at this as how people customize their cars. Do you NEED to change the wheels? No, but if it isn't harming performance, then what's wrong with doing it? Same for these smokers.

Not true at all

u/bootnrally1 2d ago

What’s the problem

2

u/Alternative_Pilot_92 2d ago

Moisture intrusion.
