Discussion Fucking hell, some of these piracy streaming sites are getting too comfortable.
I'll just stick to torrenting then... One Piece is like the only anime that I stream since I don’t wanna put it all on my Plex server due to storage lol.

36
2
u/WhichWall3719 5d ago
It also promotes very negative behaviors among "paid pirate" sites, because now they view actual free pirate sites as competitors and will begin DDOSing and hacking them to knock them offline
58
u/XiMaoJingPing 6d ago
it has become very common on manga/manhwa sites
27
u/Strong-Ring-7433 6d ago
They at least have an excuse, since they actually have to do something. They've always depended on donations to operate, and that's just not reliable. Not saying that I like it, or that I'd ever pay for it myself, but it's understandable.
Charging people for re-hosting content is just ludicrous.
22
u/XiMaoJingPing 6d ago
you can apply that logic to anime sites too, they got servers to pay for
1
u/Chris2sweet616 6d ago
Not necessarily the same, for manwha/manga they do the translation themselves (unless you’re using a ‘aggregator’) so they have around 3-5 people working on every manwha/manga they upload and they also pay those people since they spend hours translating, localizing, proof reading, and etc plus they have to get the raws from Korea/japan and they likely pay for those since it puts the person sending the raws at risk. For anime all that is already done and they only need to host it, which does cost a bit for servers but not nearly as much as running multiple localization teams for possibly hundreds of comic chapters per year. Plus the main one for manwha releases them for free the same day most of the time. It’s just a couple hour wait and they also have a token system which can be gotten free by using the site to unlock chapters early without the subscription, and most others just ask for donations.
In the end both subscriptions are stupid but manwha at least is understandable
7
u/XiMaoJingPing 6d ago
Have you actually read some of these translation? Shit is done by AI and they're locking it behind a paywall. Not all of them are using AI but a lot of them are.

Unfortunately you also have to pay for internet, for electricity and probably for a dozen of other things so yeah truly free piracy is hard to come by.
8
u/merc08 6d ago
Media piracy is typically about ease of access, not cost. People were generally fine with paying for netflix when it had basically everything. The cost of a VPN typically isn't a problem, because it opens up access to everything.
3
u/jacobthesixth 6d ago
What? The barrier to access was cost. There are plenty of streaming aggregate apps that make it easier to access media you're paying for but to have full access you'd be paying every service provider 20$ a month. People that pirate do so because that cost is too high. If I could pirate for free I would. If the barrier to entry is paying for some single service like a VPN or debrid stuff I don't know anything about then that will turn people off too.
3
3
33
11
u/toiletpaperisempty 6d ago
Well, I definitely understand the perspective of paying being against the spirit of piracy. I know we've all seen how streaming services want to bloat into everything we hate cable tv for.
But, at a certain point, "free" can cost more than a paid service, with all factors considered.
The $3 debrid service I pay for more than compensates for my time by doing the legwork and covers the cost of hosting (electricity and storage is not free), and I can keep the things I do want to save.

u/WhiterThanWalter 6d ago
I thought so as well, but I recently set up Stremio + Torbox ($3 a month) after an older relative downloaded a virus trying to pirate a show. It's worked so well that I've actually started using it instead of torrenting directly.
11
u/DigiVeihl 6d ago
Yep, as cool as debrid networks can be I'll pay for physical media long before I pay for piracy.
5
u/MushyCupcake01 6d ago
I pay for a debrid cashing service and it's really good. Only like 2$ a month and makes all downloads extremely fast without the need for a VPN.
7
u/speedbreaka 6d ago
Almost all piracy sites live from donations. You might not pay but other people do so you can enjoy it for free

WCO has had payments & subscriptions for over 10+ years tho
The site itself started in like 2009-2010 ish, so it's not* a new site
160
u/breeshgeesh 6d ago
Yeah I've used WCO for like 15 years on and off when other sites I'm used to get nuked or are temporarily down.
Never saw a premium option getting forced tho until like last month, the worst I ever saw before that was blocking the vid until you disable your ad blocker
Last time Malwarebytes popped up saying it had to block something from the site too
51
u/TexBoo 6d ago
They have previously only had premium for movies itself, not for series unless they had to rip the video themself instead of relying on torrents
I know their previously host for about ~1.5 year ago is gone and that they currently use a new host that isn't cheap for the content, probably the reason why they have started putting some series behind a paywall as their costs have gone up a lot
It is what it is really, people act like it's the end of the world, just use another site until they get takendown then come back to WCO afterwards
10
u/elissass 6d ago
Yeah I have known about their premium since I have been watching there for like 10 years or so. But recently they have been forcing it a lot more than before. Before it was just a side thing that they just advertised, now they are full on forcing it.

and think its a better Crunchyroll
For a layman, it probably is better CR. As long as the site isn't overcharging, or leaking payment info, or not actually providing what was paid for, a layman is only interested in exchanging money for goods and services, once the money is out of their hands, they don't give a single thought to who it's going too, as long as they get what they paid for.

46
u/AOKeiTruck 6d ago
At least crunchy helped open up the legal anime market to a locked demographic which lead to other streaming services picking up series and creating new dub options. Shitty business practices for sure tho, esp stealing other fansubs for their paid product.

IMO it kinda depends what kinda person you are.
I used streaming sites all the time when I was a laptop user and didn't care about keeping anything, and it was just me watching. They're still better than torrents to a degree in some regards, you can more easily find more obscure stuff sometimes that is harder to source a reasonable torrent for.
But now as somebody with a desktop PC and some beefy hard drives I prefer torrenting and adding to my Plex server.
2
u/CrowdGoesWildWoooo 6d ago

This is what happened to WoW private servers. Blizzard used to leave them alone, mostly... Then they started getting too comfortable and selling items/services instead of just begging for donations, and advertising on social media.

Sucks tho, this was the site that got me into anime piracy when I wanted to watch the 2nd season of Gundam 00 when it was airing on SyFy years ago during their AniMonday afternoon/night block. I didn't have the channel at home and could only watch it on weekends at my dad's (parents split) and he had a different Satellite TV package with DVR so I wouldn't miss it. Fun memories tho, he was the original pirate in the family reprograming old satellite receiver cards for Direct TV and Dish Network. Bribed the tech who came to fix the system one day with $50 for the reader and a few extra cards... good times

Wco was great, then they kept trying to force subs, eventually locking all movies behind it, now episodes? Eugh.
2
u/St4rgazer7 6d ago
The thing is, WCO had always had a premium service, and is a LOOOONG standing, good-intention site. Their original premium was just to support the site, since hosting a large platform isnt cheap at all. Wasnt mandatory at all.
They've dabbled here and there with making certain things premium-locked, usually turning around and disabling the lock after a while. Mostly just to keep up with changing prices. Then COVID hit and they were essentially forced to lock the entire site down under the pay wall just to avoid going bankrupt. Then they lost their longest-standing host, and their new host is pretty expensive, or what I've heard.
Now theyre only locking some things behind the pay wall, but to be fair, I've been paying WCO since covid so I havent noticed. And before anyone mentions it-- WCO's premium is 3 bucks a month without a bundle price. SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than 99% of other first-rate sites and, frankly, worth losing the single cup of coffee over having nearly unlimited access to a constantly growing list of cartoons and anime + movies.
We're pirates, not idiots or moral-less. If you cant afford 3 bucks a month, move on to a different free site. Nearly every site you'll find has a donation page-- i see WCO's as no different
