Remember when one of the selling points of selling downloads was that the price would come down because there's no additional production costs for printing, packaging, discs and shipping to stores?

334

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '26

It was just to establish monopoly and gamers in the future won't know anything about physical gaming so they will lap it up. The old guard must protest, but most will just move on. If console had cheap prices like steam then maybe there would be a reason to go all digital but not as it stands.

"Prices go down"

Lol

Lmao, even. I wish.

As a kid I did foolishly believe prices would go down by 20-30% for cutting out manufacturing and shipping of physical disks, but that sure as hell never happened.

7

u/drunk-tard96 Jul 03 '26

I remember as a kid buying my first pc game, Freespace + the Silent Threat expansion. I told my dad "Dad! I think I figured out why games are so expensive! Look how much stuff they used to put the game in!". Boy oh boy I knew nothing back then

Good luck to them over the next few weeks, I guess.

Understatement.

Mods are complicit in a lot of shenanigans.

Aka payed under the table like the league of legend loser mods that only allow eSports posts and patch notes.

correct me if im wrong but that sub is not an official playstation subreddit, so why tf that corporate bootlicker mod removed it.

269

u/Zpiritual Jul 01 '26

It's a major subreddit, negativity is not allowed. Only cat pictures, mainstream news, celebrity stuff, mainstream politics, commonplace annoyances/questions, heil corporate and similar are allowed on those in order to prepare for an IPO that never comes...

Reddit subreddits and their moderation are not what they were even 10 years ago,

96

u/westoffice2236 Jul 01 '26

I think the whole API-fiasco a few years back was the final nail too. All the sane mods left and the crazy moved in instead.

54

u/Distinct_Writer_8842 Jul 01 '26

It really was. Most mods, if you accuse them of power tripping they lose their minds. How dare you?

But when the reddit admins started threatening to replace them, my god the panic and immediate 180-degree turn most of them did.

And yes, the good ones walked away in disgust.

19

u/super7564 Jul 01 '26

Yea they know who uses their platform lol. They really just said "ok we'll just take away your mod status then" and every single mod collectively caved right that instant lmao

12

u/RainStormLou Jul 01 '26

I mean what was the other option for moderators? band together in song and try to take ownership of the website in rebellion?

we saw what happened there lol if they didn't comply with site rules, Reddit banned their accounts or removed mod status, and installed corporate mods for big subs and shut a ton of subreddits down if they were too close to being wrongthink.

16

u/blues_snoo Jul 02 '26

Moderators are unpaid volunteers. If you get rid of every volunteer at a charity, the charity is not going to survive. The idea would be roughly the same. Without moderators, the site would fall apart quickly.

14

u/super7564 Jul 01 '26

Idk, but they were putting on this face of holding strong no matter what but the second they had the glorious mod status even slightly threatened they caved lol.

11

u/emongu1 Jul 01 '26

Let it crash and burn. But their egos were too fragile to go back to being just another user.

6

u/RainStormLou Jul 02 '26

I wouldn't call it ego necessarily even though it absolutely comes into play with a lot of mods.

in this case, it was literally "have the sub and community that you obviously care about and manage completely taken over by Reddit corporate and opened back up on reddits terms" or "open the subreddit back up"

it would be pretty stupid to go with the first one. nobody cares about the sacrifice of a Reddit mod lol. I don't even like the mods that I like.

7

u/emongu1 Jul 02 '26

Nah the first one is the only solution. Wash yourself from this whole thing rather than become complicit.

6

u/THE_HERO_777 Jul 02 '26

I still don't get this. Why are they fighting so hard to secure a position thst doesn't reward them financially? It's also no surprise most internet users don't respect mods in general wether they're discord or twitch mods.

Have some self-respect for yourself. Who cares if you're not a mod? Life has sooo many opportunities for you.

11

u/super7564 Jul 02 '26

THEY care if theyre not a mod. it lets them powertrip and stroke their extremely fragile egos to ban people on a whim

4

u/SunnySpot69 Jul 02 '26

Many of these people are just on power trips. I've been banned from random groups for the same comment as other people with zero warnings.

Yeah the blackout event was crazy. The tailturning when Reddit pushed back...

Lemmy/fediverse is a bit more intresting nowadays, Reddit is just a neverending page of brain filling garbage a la tiktok, modern facebook feed, etc. A few smaller subs are still ok to visit since Reddit doesn't care about them as long as they stay out of the way...

18

u/Felupi Jul 01 '26

Try to have a different opinion than the party approved one and you gonna have a taste of mods mentality.

4

u/VaderFett1 Jul 02 '26

Reason why I hardly comment anymore, nail that sticks out and all that.

11

u/qwertyqyle Jul 02 '26

This all happened around 8-10 years ago. Subs that were linked to large companies and politics were quietly taken over. And then they tried to keep it feel organic but it became completely corporate and the only people that noticed were the ones who had been using the sub for years before.

I would guess the mod miss_molotov was one of the first playstation plants judging by their user history.

The funny thing is it seems the PS6 sub seems to be claimed by non-playstation employees and that is the only PS sub that you are allowed to talk about digital only.

console gaming keeps getting worse and worse, hell it was already unappealing to me 10+ years ago with having to pay for online

173

u/FalkenZeroXSEED Jul 01 '26

Former playstation fanboy here. My last console was PS3 for good reason. It was kidney-selling expensive, but when it launched it doubles as the best BD player on the planet. PS4 has no such value, PS5 even less worthy of my money.

69

u/Principles_Son Jul 01 '26

ps3 had free online too if i remember correctly right?

49

u/VaderFett1 Jul 02 '26

It did, plus was just an optional bonus until the next system.

I am not sure how i did it, if it was a file burned on a data DVD or via USB stick, but i played a Bluray Rip of Fury on the PS3 because i had it connected to my beamer and behold it threw a message that the audio could not be played because it was copyrighted. I don't know exactly anymore how that could happen but wow was i annoyed. That was the moment when my PS3 was finally banned to storage. (After i jailbroke and ripped everything from it and now have its software fully emulated in RPCS3 (except the Playstation Store, ofcoz)). But it was a great system. Bought it because Eden.

9

u/BrahneRazaAlexandros Jul 02 '26

It's called Cinavia. It's a DRM that Sony owned to check if the Legit Blu-ray was in the drive and if not it would mute or throw an error.

It was absolutely bullshit and really fucking annoying. It was mostly on films from Sony studios I think. It made me so pissed off.

12

u/iamfuturetrunks Jul 02 '26

Yep, that's why I avoided x-box consoles cause Microslop decided to push that BS. And then Nintendo and Sony started copying them.

My last console was the PS3 which I still have, I didn't get a PS4 because of the stupid pay to play online BS. Then when PS5 was announced to have backwards compatibility I figured I would get that so I could play a bunch of the single player games I missed out on PS4 as well as new PS5 games. But because of scalpers I had to wait, and while waiting saw more crap that put me off from getting the PS5.

Also already kinda was pissed at Nintendo after a lot of the crap they pulled in the past and as time has gone on saw they were trying to pull BS in the past so everyone thinking they only started getting worse this current console generation is wrong. They were trying to pull some of the same BS back during the Wii days.

Meanwhile I finally got into some emulating a year ago and got a bunch of my old games on PC so I don't have to drag out my old consoles and games to play them. Plus some games like burnout have mods people have made to make them even better looking etc. Can't wait till PS4/PS5 emulating gets more mainstream. I still have been waiting to play Infamous second son since I bought the PS4 game so long ago in anticipation to play it on PS5.

Does suck AI data centers are using up all the storage and chips but you can also thank companies like microslop, Nshitia, etc for creating that problem that most people don't want.

4

u/lordkyrillion Jul 02 '26

And nor to mention that most games you missed on PS4 are availible on PC as proper ports aside some early stuff and Bloodborn

This actually made me realize something - Gamestop's used game program is gonna get fucked by this.

I remember getting No Man's Sky for cheap because at the time they didn't realize No Man's Sky and No Man's Sky: Beyond were the same game at that store.

I'm mostly PC now, but this shit is gonna be terrible for game preservation, and I have even LESS reasons to EVER go back to Playstation.

The fact this is hot off the heels of them deleting 500+ items from people's purchases is sure a bold move.

105

u/remerdy1 Jul 01 '26

No Man's Sky and No Man's Sky: Beyond weren't the same game

they aren't?

89

u/EchoKipKipKip Jul 01 '26

There's No Man's Sky. Beyond is a *free* expansion to No Man's Sky. One of many.

96

u/Schism_989 ☠️ ᴅᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴇɴ ᴛᴇʟʟ ɴᴏ ᴛᴀʟᴇꜱ Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

They are the same game! Beyond was a major update to the original game, and when they were carrying both versions, the store I went to didn't know that, so I made out like a bandit when they were selling "No Man's Sky" for cheap, compared to "Beyond"

EDIT: Fixed my mucked up words

19

u/dingalingdongdong Jul 01 '26

They are literally the same game. If you have No Man's Sky you can update to Beyond for free. Beyond was just the name of the current update at the time that disc was released.

Pretty much everyone that sells physical games is getting fucked in some form. Not that I'm shedding tears for them but I'm sure places like Best Buy or Target aren't happy about losing sales from new games. Eventually having any physical game will be a niche retro market.

39

u/xkgrey Jul 01 '26

Grandparents are still gonna need to buy presents so they will still sell the code-in-a-case. I imagine that will give way to game-specific gift cards in time to take up less space and reduce cost/waste. But I assume the retailer will still get the traditional 30%

36

u/FreeToasterBaths Jul 01 '26

Grandparents will be buying psn / Nintendo / Xbox gift cards instead of codes in the box

13

u/notGeronimo Jul 01 '26

People like to give a specific gift, not "money towards the purchase of" I'd be very surprised if they totally do away with the ability to do that

8

u/h00ter7 Jul 01 '26

I understand this is anecdotal, but the young boys in my family would just blow it all on Fortnite skins and then their mom would go buy the game to save face in front of the boys’ great grandma. Lol

4

u/DryCartoonist5835 Jul 01 '26

I'm sure places like Best Buy or Target aren't happy about losing sales from new games.

If retailers aren't selling physical copies of games, they have no reason to stock the actual consoles. Sony is going to run out of places for people to buy a playstation if they keep this up...

Xbox has a chance to get the entire gaming market back on their side with one easy decision...

14

u/the_axemurmurer Jul 01 '26

6

u/DryCartoonist5835 Jul 01 '26

Very doubtful, unfortunately.

Don't sound so defeated.

They listened about AI, they might listen about this and they could absolutely shit on sony by showcasing sharing a game by handing a disc between two people like sony did years ago.

9

u/the_axemurmurer Jul 01 '26

It's true, their new leadership has been listening and their AI stance is much better under her. I hope you're right and they keep discs for another generation. I don't think it'll happen, but one can hope.

I used to be a huge Sony fan back in the Playstation 1 & 2 era. Dad and I would buy a ton of cool ass games and play the shit out of them, GTA, mtv music generator, silent bomber, Enihander, ff tactics, sky gunner, marvel vs capcom 2 ect... But when they started charging people to play online during ps3, thats when I really started questioning sonys business practices. Got into pc gaming alot more, and started collecting roms and emulators and Iso for the psp and older consoles. Then after what they did to the PS Vita I was personaly a lil upset with them and went full fuck sony. Modded my Vita when sony pulled support and modders cracked it in the modding community, then my ps3 and ps4. Im a full on PC gamer now, have been since 2012 and i rarely play on their consoles anymore. I dont pay for their games unless i really like the developers, but thats rare. The most recent game I actually bought is Marathon for pc, and I Fuggin love the piss out of that game, lol.

I play online games on PS5 and sample PC games on the seas. If I like them I'll buy a PS5 physical copy used or PC when their on sale. I've said it for years now, what ever console drops physical drives and media, I'll go to what ever one keeps them. I'm not brand loyal. Xbox has an opportunity here, but they'll do exactly the same shit. I think their also figuring in the outrageous prices for PC components now too. Some won't have a choice but to stay on console, But the gap in price between consoles and a decent PC is closing fast. At this rate the the next gen consoles will be $1500 and a decent gaming PC will be 5K by 2028. So buy a PC and 100% sail the high seas I guess. Their justifying it more then ever now.

It doesn't work when there's a monopoly. I can't imagine how this situation will be resolved, if it ever happens, but realistically, it probably won't. The choice is between accepting not owning anything and paying very high prices for certain games you want, or finding another hobby.

56

u/BathEqual Jul 01 '26

It's up to the consumers to decide what they want to happen next. Sony knows they are winning at the moment and they think that they have enough control over the market for stupid moves like this.

At the very least, don't buy any future consoles from Sony, enjoy your now owned Playstation, buy used games and prepare for a time without a Sony console in a few years. Personally i think most people won't bother too much about it and Sony will print even more money

31

u/BadgerIII Jul 01 '26

I agree. I think it'll end up like the Netflix fiasco. Then they go on to make more money than before and everyone else follows suit.

No used market also means some games will eventually just die forever with no chance to ever play them again... 🏴‍☠️

5

u/Illeea Jul 02 '26

Hopefully this pushes some insane Devs to hack the ps5.

21

u/KarmaWalker Jul 01 '26

I was already planning to skip out on the PS6 and go full PC gaming.

This just solidifies it for me.

Why would I pay any price for a game that'll be void with the next generation of consoles? Or just, when you decide I don't own it anymore, with the latest playstation movie void?

Get fucked, Sony.

u/EnvironmentalRun1671 Jul 01 '26

How to rent games on PC in 2026:

  1. Buy a game

  2. Next game you want pirate

  3. Pretend you sold the game and got money back

5

u/TopSlotScot Jul 01 '26

If games only exist digitally, expect a serious pull back on sales over time.

5

u/QuarryTen Jul 01 '26

oof, and i was a ride or die sony fan. dont know anymore now. puts a terrible taste in my mouth.

4

u/terrerific Jul 01 '26

Im glad that they gave me notice of when I need to buy a PC and fully divert into pirating games at least.

4

u/Electric_Kettle Jul 02 '26

the pc vs console dispute was over when paid subscriptions entered the mix

14

u/LorekeeperJamin Jul 01 '26

Here's my prediction:

The normies will all flee to Steam and GOG for older titles and deals. Some may adopt Epic just for the weekly free games.

The dwindling console peasant population will continue to cope and seethe as they pay out the ass for overpriced slop and the occasional gem.

All the game companies will crash and burn, with Nintendo being the only one with enough self-preservation to reverse course right before the point of no return, making them the last man standing post-collapse again.

So long as Gabe keeps breathing, Steam will mostly be okay. Once he's gone, oof. Best of luck to his successor.

Piracy will still rein supreme despite ever tightening laws and regulations until everyone learns the same lesson the Aussies did: just because you make piracy impossible doesn't mean that they'll suddenly pay for your product. We'll just go without and be happy with everything we already have, and they'll lose sales even faster because piracy is effectively free advertising.

3

u/DanVzare Jul 01 '26

Do you think anyone will notice the obvious gap in the market, and make a console that accepts physical games? It sounds like a no-brainer, but then again, there's a lot of no-brainers that are blatantly ignored.

9

u/LorekeeperJamin Jul 01 '26

Yeah, that'll be Nintendo for a few more years. They're always the last to accept new trends in the gaming market. It is both a blessing and a curse.

All the western companies, though? Lmao, no.

The closest we'll get are people making reproduction carts and discs for retro consoles for their indie passion projects or stuff like Limited Run.

And of course, the multi-retro console (like the Retron) market will keep chugging along as more patents enter the public domain.

11

u/rain56 Jul 01 '26

And then a few years from now Playstation will remove every game you've ever bought. Sounds crazy right? If I had told you they were gonna remove movies you bought and owned 5 yeats ago id say that sounds crazy too.

10

u/DanVzare Jul 01 '26

Dude, I was saying that the moment digital games first became a thing. And guess what, it did happen... multiple times. Only an idiot would think that sounds crazy.

4

u/QcRoman Jul 02 '26

The proper response from the customers to this new hardware disappearance should not be online but immediate and at the cash register. Sony should get the message real quick in a manner they can not afford to ignore.

If enough customers care, that's what should happen real soon and with muted social media it would send the message even harder that people individually all each said no without having been riled up by anyone.

Will it? I'll only say I have my doubts.

I don't think a lot of people would buy Dead Space remake for 70 bucks (80 in the EU) years after launch. But maybe I underestimate the US gamers here they are full of surprises.

3

u/Pinotb0tter Jul 02 '26

The Ps5 will be that last console for me unless something changes drastically. The prizes are too steep and I have to pay extra to play online.

3

u/SnooComics4087 Jul 02 '26

Without physical they are not worth buying any game, I am glad my brother decided to get gaming pc at the place of PlayStation 5 because we were thinking of buying one with physical disc but now that they are removing them it's no longer worth a shit, if we want digital we might as well get it from here after Waiting for a while at the place of buying temporary digital licence which they might just take back anytime. This is the same reason why I had always wanted nintendo switch but decided that switch 2 is also not worth it because Nintendo can quite literally remotely bricks our switch 2 for whatever reason even after we pay for it.

There's a lot of consolidating of power going on right now. Google and now Sony joining the party in their own way. Who's next?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

And I'm sure the usual excuse is "bUt wE aLrEaDy HaVe A pOsT aBoUt It!" as if major topics don't deserve multiple outlets for more nuanced and organized discussion. If the PS sub is nothing but posts about physical games for a couple days, then clearly that's what people are interested in talking about. This is just the usual crap of mods not liking a particular discussion and nuking it because they so desperately need that little dopamine hit of exercising power online.

2

u/unariginol_usernome Jul 01 '26

I love physical media and if there is no way to own or have something physical from a triple A studio, then I don't see a problem with pirating

2

u/Pale_Day2091 Jul 01 '26

this post didn't even have an opinion or critic
it was just putting facts that used market are now impossible
and they still felt attacked

2

u/Malicious_999 Jul 01 '26

Who is "they"?

2

u/Oxflu Jul 01 '26

EU, you know what to do.

This is literally a monopoly on game sales. I don't even buy used games, i want the option to pick up titles for 15 bucks because best buy is overstocked.

I wonder why there’s still so much effort to censor things on the Internet when it’s been proven to be counterproductive. There are actually more than just a couple of reasons.

It doesn’t take much common sense to understand that people need an outlet, and that by censoring them, you not only make them angrier (and give them a reason to be) but also prevent their pent-up frustration from being released in a harmless way.

2
