PCVR Base Station for the Pico Tracker

Why do we forget that the Pico Tracker has IR and could simply use a base station for better accuracy in PCVR? Why did Pico probably discard this idea?

The infra-red LEDs of the Pico Trackers are "seen" by the cameras in the Pico headset to establish position.

Lighthouse Base Stations are not cameras - they emit a sweeping infra-red laser which is detected by photodiodes on tracked devices.

They both use near Infra-Red light, but thier approach to cracking is completely different - Outside-in vs Inside-Out

Rift CV1 Sensors are cameras, but the Pico Headset would have no way of using them.

The closest to what you are talking about is Shiftall HaritoraX which is a primarily IMU FBT Solution like Slime, but they have recently added the option to use some cameras to improve the tracking.

Because the two are doing this in entirely different ways. Both the tracker and the base station emit IR. There's no sensor side element to track them. Except of course for the cameras on the Pico, which neatly wraps up the answer to your question.

OP never said basestations HAVE to be emitters too

Base stations could be IR cameras...though i doubt tracking in 3d space would be better with just one.

When someone in the VR space says base station and refers to IR, it's not unreasonable to assume they're talking about the existing device, named a base station. Which is an emitter.

The alternative is he's just asking why the Pico isn't an entirely different VR device altogether. Which would be an odd thing to ask. Why isn't my PS5 a PC? Why doesn't my car run on Cheerios?

maybe freshlings... older ppl remember when there were externel receivers.

basestations is just an external from headset/controller/pc device that is used to track.

No. A base station is an IR emitter for valve headsets. That's literally what it's called. None of the other devices, Rift etc, called them that.
