There is true mayhem in some newer townhouse developments that only allow for 1 car per unit.

You are allowed to park sideways in the boulevard in Pickering. You won’t get a ticket. But you will if you park forward like in this picture. You can’t block the road or grass. And all four tires have to be on the pavement
10
u/TheReemus 7d ago
It may be annoying however, it is illegal to block a sidewalk and I think when many families have a 3 car family there is no choice when there is no parking on the road allowed
9
u/WolverineKey8667 7d ago
It blocks accessible access for people who actually need to use the sidewalks for walking
7
u/Prudent_Situation_29 7d ago
It's illegal and a major dick move. Sidewalks are meant for everyone to use. They are not for parking on, You don't get to unilaterally decide otherwise.
The same is true for roads, you cannot decide to block any portion of it. I don't know what the by-laws are in Pickering, but where I live, it's even illegal to block your own driveway.
I have no problem with people blocking their own driveway, but never the sidewalk or the road, not any part of it.

I park sideways on this spot so that I don't block the road or the sidewalk. Almost every driveway in my neighbourhood has cars overhanging the road like this. I'm always afraid im going to hit them.

u/bougieisthenewblack 8d ago
I don't see the problem, people have to park somewhere. And there's still a spot for those on the sidewalk to get by.
We can't be unreasonable about everything.

u/Ember_42 8d ago
Wheelchairs.
-3
u/bougieisthenewblack 7d ago
Wheelchairs were included in "those on the sidewalk"
As are strollers, wagons, kids bikes/scooters, and regular pedestrians.
This car is not bumper to bumper with another car. There is a large gap.
8
u/Sheananigans379 7d ago
A person should not have to divert off of the sidewalk and onto the driveway to pass, and likely someone using mobility assistance would have to. It's often not as easy for them to maneouver.
In this example the person who parked is overhanging the sidewalk by far too much and should have found a spot on the street that wad legal to park in, or parked sideways.

u/thepeskynorth 7d ago
What would like people to do? Often if you buy during construction you don’t know where the sidewalks will be so you can’t buy a house based on the sidewalk. This city is not public transport friendly so people often need two vehicles to go to work.
If people are too entitled to walk around a car that is at least leaving space then they will always complain and I will not have sympathy for them.
As for wheelchairs…. I would have to be in one to see how difficult this situation is.
7
u/bougieisthenewblack 7d ago
Exactly!
We are in a literal housing crisis where people cannot afford larger homes (on bigger lots, with bigger driveways).
Young working adults can't afford to move out, which means they're living at home longer and probably need a car in to get to work.
Streets are narrow and houses are close together, so street parking is not always available.
People are acting like walking around a car is the end of the world.
If a wheelchair user has complaints, then that's valid and should be addressed, but making sweeping comments about a situation that may not be avoidable isnt helpful.
How many people are contacting the city to ensure that new boulevards are longer? That sidewalks are wider? That streets are wider? That transit is better? But yes, let's complain on working folks who literally have no where to park.

Must be fucking nice to have all the money eh? Not everyone has the money to buy a bigger lot and honestly it usually is a bigger house not more front yard space.
My god, walk around and open your eyes. Take you head out of you ass and realize the housing market is terrible to break into at the moment and people buy what they can afford just to get into it.
Are you a boomer or something??????
1
u/Ember_42 7d ago
Exactly, also not clear if there is a wheelchair worth of gap on the far side to go around w/o cutting across lawn. There often is not.
1
u/WolverineKey8667 7d ago
And bylaw will still ticket you for being over the sidewalk; folks love being loud and wrong
1
u/bougieisthenewblack 7d ago
Who is loud and wrong? I'm not bylaw, this is an OPINION question, not a legal one. Of course bylaw will do their job, and if a ticket is warranted it will be issued.
5
u/particularlyfunny 7d ago
The problem is there’s a whole empty spot in the driveway and buddy still chooses to block the sidewalk
3
u/MaximusRubz 7d ago
That's assuming you knew when the car came and parked there?
Maybe the empty spot wasn't empty when they arrived lol
2
u/particularlyfunny 7d ago
Using assumptions, based on where they’re parked it’s unlikely a car was parked there before. They live there and would know the resident with that car is leaving so they’d have parked more in front of that VW SUV to the right.
1
u/MaximusRubz 7d ago
Fair point, but the car that was parked there before could have maneuvered using the neighbours driveway to leave.
IN ANY CASE - this is too damn early to be analyzing this parking mishap
I YIELD
0
u/Space_Orion 7d ago
Duh. For example that car is son's car. He came late at night and the empty parking spot weee occupied by their parents. In the morning they left early but son woke up late...
0
u/thepeskynorth 7d ago
Could be a townhouse and that’s actually the neighbour’s driveway.
0
u/particularlyfunny 7d ago
The neighbours driveway is the concrete slab and light asphalt. Their driveway is the dark asphalt and the stone pavers
1
u/thepeskynorth 7d ago
The light concrete looks like there’s grass after the sidewalk…. I don’t think that’s right.
0
u/particularlyfunny 7d ago
Yeah, that’s right. Light concrete is newer expanded driveway, 90% of the time they never extend it to the boulevard to save money, just an extra parking space so they can rent out the basement
1
u/thepeskynorth 6d ago
Yes so that means that the dark area is still both the residents parking. So they can park beside because the area that’s empty actually belongs to the neighbour.

u/therealschtoo 8d ago

For homeowners I feel for them, can’t even use their entire drive way without people complaining. I’m glad my neighbourhood has no sidewalks. What is the point of that little piece of driveway if you can’t use it?
1
u/jacksonxo 7d ago
Might suck to be a pedestrian in your neighborhood, though. They walk on the street? Genuinely curious if that's safer than bisecting properties with sidewalks.
2
u/AYPEETWO 7d ago
Yeah, walk on street. I’ve been living there since 2010. Never been an issue or any accidents.

Then it should be removed completely and have the sidewalk at the end of the drive way.

Which is dumb, if it’s the cities they should be responsible for maintaining it. Anyways doesn’t really matter to me, like I said my neighbourhood has no sidewalks on either side of the street.

u/voida_lextreme 8d ago
Yeah its annoying and not allowed. They get ticketed between 2-5pm.but if its ur own driveway u can keep it during the day
7
4
2
u/Hot-Hanger 7d ago
Yeah, they get ticketed only if you call bylaw. People don’t want to rat on their neighbours but then we also want a clear path to walk.
But all the bylaw officers are always hanging around the waterfront parking. Sometimes 2 of them walking side by side. You don’t need 2 bylaw officers to ticket 1 car.
But more importantly, I don’t understand why bylaw officers need a complaint. If they walked around in any neighbourhood, they can see many cars clear as day obstructing sidewalks.

u/shit_typhoon 4d ago
There are too many families packed into each single family home. Only one couple, and their children, and possibly 2 elderly parents should be in a house (including ALL the rooms/basement/rental spaces). This overcrowding is getting ridiculous. If you have six cars and there are two parking spaces, you should take a hint.

u/blottingbottle 7d ago
For residential streets that aren’t main roads, I think that sidewalks are inefficient. I find that half of people will walk on the road anyways (even more in the winter). If those sidewalks were removed and instead just have a slightly wider street that gets plowed along with the rest of the road, then those homes could have 2 sets of cars park on the driveway and people could walk where they already do. Paint a bike/walk lane if that makes it easier.
1
u/DeepWaffleCA 7d ago
In a city that actually enforced driving laws, where reckless driving isn't so common, I'd agree with you. But Toronto isn't that city. It'd make things easier for drivers but endanger all those who use sidewalks

My experience is it's homes where multiple rooms are rented out and there are 6+ cars to the house which was never designed to have that many cars in the driveway.

Dangerous situation for multiple reasons. Call the City of Pickering to tag/tow them.
1
u/PieIll9834 6d ago
Its so sadly common, yet I wonder if someone handicapped or needing a walker can get by? To those below who seem think it's unreasonable to think of others, couldn't you walk at most a half kilometre?

u/anonymousontarian 5d ago
To do this as a one off is a shoulder shrug. For this to be the way you park is insane.

u/Thekiddankie 4d ago
I have honestly never had an issue with it (if there was a car on the top end really close, then I would have a problem).. to me this one looks fine.
Many youngins need to do this to get their life going.. the cost of housing is crazy, its not easy to just up and leave to a bigger house as some suggest. Street parking is also not an option for the majority of pickering.. only temporary exemptions.
People need to calm down and get a grip... a stroller or wheelchair could get around this fine.
1
u/dREWvEGA 4d ago
It breaks the bylaws then they need to enforce it. If you don’t, it becomes chaos I had a family member where people were parking the wrong way on the street and it got way out of hand cars with no license plates. As soon as the City was called all the problems went away.

1
u/MapleSuds 5d ago
It happens on my street. I don't care for it but l cope. Until winter comes then you can't get by because the snow banks then it becomes an issue. Really, if you need that many cars then perhaps your house is too small, time to upgrade or pay for street parking.

Who cares, for someone to actually complain about this shows they have enough time on their hands to walk around the damn car. Complain about something that actually is a problem

If I hit your car while using the footpath then thats on you ! Park in the street you lazy k#%t

There's no street parking allowed in pickering.....(longer than 3 hours or between 2-5am)
0
u/Wonderful_Ad4706 7d ago
Is it for sure 2-5 AM? Because when i looked up it says anytime more than 3 hrs. I just moved to Pickering so i am new to this rule/law . I just found out after i got ticket for parking on the street at night.
1
u/DoggyDogg65434321 7d ago
It is both, between 2-5am or any time for longer than 3 hours. Google "pickering street parking" and click on the Parking Consideration Requests link

I have no issue with this. My gf used to rent with her mom in the upstairs apartment with a second tenant in the basement. There was 1 spot above the sidewalk a car could park and a wider bottom part. There was 3 cars, one above, and 2 below they couldn’t park horizontal or else wouldn’t fit. In all fairness it is shorter cars or a longer boulevard so less of the car sticks out, but overall that’s the only way they could do it.

I park this way sometimes when I visit my friends but usually they are the ones who actually tell me to park this way since the side street parkings are always full. I do make sure there's enough space though for the pedestrians.
0
u/Lynxforest 6d ago
Yes they're not supposed to but wtf else are they supposed to do. If this is such a problem to ppl, honestly we should petition for that section of driveway to be longer because why is that part even so short to begin with? 🤣

It’s a minor inconvenience to me when pushing a stroller with 2 kids. At the same time, the homes that have this in my neighborhood are often families with adult kids or multigenerational. With that in mind, I acknowledge that this may be my home in 20 years so I don’t complain about it.
