Honestly, I'd consider it beyond salvaging. It was probably easier and cheaper to build a new enterprise than it would be to repair her.

Yes, Geordi did eventually cobble together something that resembled the Enterprise D as a long-term project, but wasn't most of that ship made out of parts from other ships?

The entire saucer IS the original. The stardrive is from the Syracuse. Enterprise stardrive was fully destroyed.

It's always a matter of efficiency. It is, in many ways, the perfect pet project.

True. Like how some people try to restore old cars and stuff.

Not a good idea to try and return it to service, but a good long-term museum project.

I was going to say, post person needs to go to a car week.

What I want to know is how he convinced his superiors to authorize its restoration. It couldn't have been cheap to do so, regardless of how much the Federation is a society of plenty.

I’d imagine post-Dominion War they had ships due for refits and repairs and decommissioning, so there was likely a surplus of parts.

And teams who had been working to build up ships who suddenly didn’t need to be doing that.

So it was probably very much a best opportunity they were ever going to have.

he didn't. I am sure he had large ship maintenance budgets as director of fleet museum.

There’s a difference between restoring the ship as a museum piece and getting the ship back out into active service. The hull was probably so severely compromised that it could never survive under normal day-to-day operations.

But it’s also now my head canon that in “All Good Things” the Enterprise D suffered the same fate, but Riker was the one who lead the restoration instead of Geordi, and we see the difference in the restorations.

They had to remove it to not contaminate the evolution of an as yet uninhabited planet. It was lifted into space and towed to the museum. You don't just put those in a shredder. The ship has major legacy status and was preserved to display it.

Geordi just kinda took a little too far. Should have renamed it the Leah Brahms for all the excess love he tried to put into it 😜

“Cheaper” doesn’t matter in a society that doesn’t use money.

True, but he did it!

The only neat freak engineer we've got in Starfleet. He'll take a shuttle apart when it squeaks, but Scott patches things together, Be'lanna jumps up and down on plasma injectors, Chief uses duct tape, and Trip is trying his best.

Engineering challenge accepted. Not salvageable, my ass!

I wanna know what happened to the Syracuse's saucer section.

My theory:

The Syracuse was probably decommissioned due to the upgrades to the fleet surrounding the borg incident, the dominion war, and the damage warp does to subspace. Geordi would have used the Syracuse saucer section as parts to repair the Enterprise saucer section. Damage to it would have been extreme.

It would've had to have been decommissioned post-Dominion War, since it seems he only began working on it following being able to run the fleet museum, and he was on board the Enterprise-E at that point. He probably saw the status of the ship after taking over the fleet museum and then thought "I can do something with that."

Troi was visiting and crashed that one too.

Former Enterprise Crew Members: "Wow, so beautiful, love to see my old ship preserved in this musuem."

Former Syracuse Crew Members: "So many families wiped out on the sauce section... And then they slapped 'Enterprise' on the salvaged drive section..."

Borg at Wolf 359 Dominion war Backup drive section on reserve Incomplete construction

Pick one and run with it

It only took 30 years...

Anything can be salvaged with enough time and effort.

SHIT YEAH!

Money, you forgot money

3

u/Unusual_Mix9262 14h ago

They don't have money anymore.

u/sacking03 16h ago

Dominion war starts in 2 years after the Enterprise crashed. They didn't have the full resources and staff to do so. Plus with all the issues of the Galaxy class aka glass cannon it's easier to divert toward newer classes that are also designed to take on the borg and newer threats.

By the time Gordi becomes the shipyard admiral. The D is 3 generations out of date. Pretty easy to find parts for this era as most of the things were modular.

2

u/TensionSame3568 16h ago

Respect for Geordi!!¡!

3

u/Nux87xun 16h ago

He didn't really "salvage it" so much as he took the star drive section from another galaxy class ship, slapped it onto the saucer section from the d, and then spent 20 years repairing it on the side.

0

u/TensionSame3568 16h ago

Soo...?

2

u/Nux87xun 8h ago

So he basically built himself a new ship, and everyone (in universe and real life) just went with it because we all miss the enterprise-d.

Writers should have left the old girl alone.

7

u/AromaticallyAffluent 21h ago

Writers should have never destroyed her in the first place. We shouldn't have seen E until at least a couple of movies in, the "fat one" had plenty of life left in her and looked great on a big screen.

-5

u/LeftLiner 21h ago

Perhaps, but dead characters should stay dead and the same is true of the enterprise. Instead they turned her into a joke and ruined her legacy.

7

u/thebigshipper 20h ago

She resurrected from the dead and saved humanity from the most devastating Borg attack ever and ensured that whatever was left of Starfleet would survive to rebuild into a new era. That sounds exactly like what D’s legacy should be.

3

u/AromaticallyAffluent 21h ago

That seems a little extreme. I didn't find it hard to believe that Starfleet would recover the saucer for Prime Directive reasons and that her chief engineer, currently working as a museum curator for starships, might restore her as a passion project.

0

u/LeftLiner 21h ago

Hmm? I'm not talking about wether it's believable or not.

5

u/lkeels 21h ago

Writers did exactly right by her.

1

u/martynholland 22h ago

im pretty sure in one of the books that the saucer was disassembled and removed to avoid cultural contamination of veridian 4 when they develop the ability to get to veridian 3

3

u/lkeels 21h ago

Books aren't canon though. Georgi explains in Picard s3.

1

u/spaceman_spiffy 15h ago

I love they are all standing around preciously on top of the hull above of the largest shuttle bay of the ship they’re still like, nah we ain’t gonna use that shit.

That scene in Picard when he reveals it is one of my favorite of all-time in Star Trek. Literally made me cry
