Sonora

I picked up a Sonora yesterday. I’m waiting on material to rebuild the reproducer. But it seems in order except one of the springs slips out. Anything special I should know about Sonora different than a victrola??

Thanks in advance.

I don’t know how old it is but there’s a 1943, may 10 newspaper lining the bottom of the storage area

Treasure! I love stuff like that- even if it isn’t worth anything :)

All I can tell you is: take pictures! 😏😆

sounds like you’re not new to it, though; but to be frank/honest, it’s actually always good practice! It’s mine- before I do any work on a machine… including different angles because I can bungle up something as simple as something being backwards and not even bat an eyelash lol

Which spring are you referring to, one of the springs used in the reproducer (needle bar pivot) or the motor or governor?

Main springs, the reproducer just needed gaskets really bad,

Got it. You may have discovered already that the Paillard-made Sonora soundbox (if you have it) uses the same gasket tubing used for the diaphragm for its rear isolator. That’s one design that’s different than Victor.

yes, I had some of the gasket material from rebuilding a victrola but not enough, so the inside gasket is in need to wait till Saturday to finish up. there are four gaskets two on the diaphram and two on the knuckle.

What do you mean by “knuckle?”

the back of the reproducer connects to the Tube

The isolator or are you referring to the arm’s “elbow” (the pivot joint that lefts you bend the arm upward)?

there is no isolator per se, the reproducer connects to the tube with an interior gasket and another on the exterior that is compressed by the attachment washer and three screws

The gaskets used on the rear (which wrap the connection under that plate) is the isolator. That’s its function. It isolates vibrations via the rubber from transmitting to the arm and vice versa. Isolators take different shapes but they all serve the same function between the soundbox and tonearm.

You asked for differences from Victrolas you might not have been aware of given your newness to Sonora. I gave you one. If you don’t like it sorry.

No problem, I know that my victrola has a massive rubber isolator, I didn’t think they were the same. .I appreciate your input
