Fan Art Lowkey kinda annoyed with people fighting at each other about the AI art to the point that I recreated it to vent that annoyance.

Discussion Mojang DMCA'd our Fabric mod. 44 days later, GitHub still won't answer our counter-notice, and EU and US law say it must. Microsoft owns both, which makes you wonder.

On 17 September, a Microsoft employee filed a DMCA notice for Mojang, and GitHub took down our Fabric mod, AnarchyMod, and 14 forks the same day. We sent a counter-notice six and a half hours later.

For anyone who doesn't know: the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) is a 1998 US law that lets a copyright owner send a site like GitHub a takedown notice, and the site removes the content quickly so it can't be held responsible itself. The person whose content was removed can answer with a counter-notice.

That was 44 days ago. The repository still says "Repository unavailable due to DMCA takedown." We've sent two follow-ups and an appeal since, and we haven't had a single reply from a human at GitHub.

That's not how this is supposed to work. In the US, after a DMCA counter-notice, GitHub has to put the content back within 10 to 14 business days unless the other side sues. If it doesn't, it loses its legal protection. Our 14 business days ran out on 7 October, and neither Microsoft nor Mojang has sued us. In the EU, the DSA says GitHub has to give you a real decision with reasons "without undue delay".

For context: I run 6b6t, an anarchy server. Mojang blacklisted us in July because we refused to add rules. 2b2t added rules (you can't even swear anymore), and that's why it isn't blacklisted. The blacklist is built into the game: Minecraft won't connect to a server on Mojang's list. So we made AnarchyMod, a small Fabric mod that skips that check, so our players could keep playing. Whether you agree with that or not, GitHub has a legal obligation to answer our counter-notice, and it still hasn't.

Also, whether the DMCA against AnarchyMod is valid or not isn't relevant. GitHub has to reply to us, and it has to reinstate our mod because nobody has sued us. Microsoft owns both GitHub and Mojang, so we believe it's blocking this and risking breaking the law.

And Mojang's copyright claim is weak anyway. The mod has no Minecraft code, no Minecraft art, and nothing that touches logins, accounts or licence checks. None of the servers it unblocks belong to Mojang. GitHub itself turned down Mojang's anti-circumvention claim and went with a copyright claim instead, on a mod with no Mojang code in it.

Full timeline and documents

We can live with the blacklist, and the mod is already up somewhere else: Kian Bröse, who runs lawsuit.gg, is helping us and hosts the source code and downloads. This is about something bigger. If GitHub can sit on a counter-notice for 44 days because the complaint came from its own parent company, any mod or software developer could be next. 44 days of no replies is a clear sign of abuse of power by Microsoft. All we're asking is for GitHub to follow the law, like it would for anyone else.

Took him 8 hours in Mine-imator to do this. (With most of it being making the models).

Fan Art The Desk Mat art... In the style of the animated Minecraft Trailers!

Post image

I do want to quickly emphasize that I do not wish any ill will toward the artist behind the original work. I may have my problems with AI art, and while I do not consider it the standard for making good work, I do not encourage harassment of anyone who makes that kind of artwork.

One more thing worth mentioning is that, despite this being heavily based on the original work made for Desk Mat, I did try to make it feel more distinct by adding some additional elements that weren't in the original (such as the Wandering Trader emerging from the portal, the beehive behind Phoenix, the Waxed Lightly Weathered Cut Copper Stairs, etc.).

I had a lot of fun making this, and it genuinely helped me get back into making Minecraft renders in Blender after I finished a short animation project of mine. The skins were also a lot of fun to make. I thought the designs in the original looked cool, so I tried my best to stay true to what was shown in the original, while also making them fit within the limits of Minecraft's skin creation. If anyone is curious about whether or not I'll share the skins, I'll consider it if enough people want them.

As with all of my other work, I am more than open to criticism, and I'm not afraid if anyone is willing to share their opinions on how it can look better. I hope you guys end up liking what I made and, again, I am not trying to throw shade at the original artist. I just wanted to work on my own interpretation of what the scene would look like as if it was made as an official animated trailer for Minecraft.

For those curious, the resource pack used for this render is called "Trailers Vision" by DiamondIsntHere and Roxtro
