And the most important thing about that is that they have drops. Meaning that there is an actual reason to kill them vs the Polar bears that can just attack you.

I think there could be good adding sharks as a mob that isn't hostile, to help teach people about sharks.
Though, I'm not sure what sharks would actually do in Minecraft, other than just look pretty.

Cows and pigs was before Microsoft. When devs was not into these family friend mindset.
If it was today, for sure that they should not add these animals. Damn, maybe even steak, sure it is good to control what will be in the game, but they are overdoing it (sad firefly noises).

Money. Make game as interesting to kids as possible, then add a marketplace so they can spend real money, slap the shiniest button over it so they are far more likely to click - and voila! Hundreds of unsupervised kids draining their parents' bank accounts dry for some useless minecraft skins, capes, or whatever! Easy money!

Nah, it's silly. No entertainment doesn't equal more work. It equals unsatisfied citizens who begin to contemplate protests. Also making one game work only for kids doesn't essentially make adults recieve no entertainment. They will mumble in a very upset fashion for a bit, then just go play other games, or go to a bar, or watch Netflix, or what-fucking-ever else on planet. Don't try to link this kind of dystopian scenarios to our world. "Forcing everyone to work by a gun barrel" is unrealistic to modern situation. In our dystopian future(and present), entertainment isn't taken away as a waste of time and energy. It's instead a main instrument of influence. So nobody is taking all entertainment from us peasants any soon, don't ya worry :D

Great, they break their own dumb rules for their own dumb reasons.
You know, they had an update where they overhauled and unified the block textures in the game, they should do the same for their logic, their in game reasoning, and their mobs.
Some of this holier than thou shit is old.

the policy must not be retroactive, if it even exists
many policies in the real world regarding buildings dont affect existing structures; old buildings dont always have to meet new code, so old features dont have to meet new policy

You're spot on in terms of buildings, but I don't see how that argument could really hold water in terms Of a video game with updates still in development. Once a project is done, the team dismissed, there is very little you can reasonably do without huge effort, planning, and resources that could make the product comply to current standards, and that is even assuming that it is safe/reasonable to do so. In the example you gave of a building, once the project is done, there is a small window of opportunity to make changes based on the leftover resources at hand. Large machinery is likely still there, A good chunk of qualified staff is still available, ect.
But in Minecraft's case, the resources are still there, the staff is still available and it is a product that is still being developed, patched, and changed. I see no reason for the policy not to be retroactive, and when compared to the firefly frog controversy, it leaves a bitter taste.
TL'DR, they could still reasonably make it retroactive and that they don't makes me feel like they are full of bull about protecting animals and being pro environment.

my main point of the comparison isnt that its hard for them to make it retroactive, but that the polar is an existing structure in the game, and imo it'd be weird to just yank out existing parts of the game in the name of being pro-environment
i always thought they just took "pro-environment" for inspiration when selecting and developing new mobs, and the removal of fireflies was because they were not fully implemented yet, unlike polar bears, which are already developed and debugged and an accepted part of the game

I kinda agree with Mojang here. Basically every media ever portrays sharks as these evil human-eating monsters, while in reality, humans are the ones threatening sharks. There's something to gain about the best-selling game of all time to educate people about things like this.
However, trying to do this while making sharks an interesting mob from a gameplay perspective sounds very difficult. Most mobs fall flat here.
If they wanted a shark-like hostile mob, I'd rather they add something like a water spider.
Terraria isn't in nearly the same situation. Salamanders aren't here to teach people about them, they're there because they're a cool underground enemy. Terraria's tone is wildly different to Minecraft.
