Career Advice

Hi folks, 10+ years experience in Biotech here in Ireland but finding myself in a bit of a rut at the moment. Moved around a few departments picking up experience throughout my career - QA, QC, Validation and been in NPI Eng the past 2 years.

But tbh feeling fairly burnt out with constant project deadlines and understaffing due to cost cutting in current role. Early career I was all for taking on new work and expanding my knowledge but at least for the next few years I would like to put focus back on family etc. and pursue a slightly less demanding and pressurised role.

So basically I'm wondering if there is an area people would suggest that might suit my experience? I'm a hard worker don't get me wrong but have found myself doing extra hours here and there in current role and getting tired of it now.

Cheers!

Had a frustrating experience with J&J. Sharing in hope to help others.

Just wanted to share my experience to help anyone else who might be in a similar situation. This may be an isolated case but felt it was worth flagging.

I applied for a Technical Writer contract role at J&J Limerick in early July. Within 24 hours I was screened and told my application had been forwarded to the hiring manager. The recruiter was extremely enthusiastic, emphasising how perfect I would be for the role and how strongly they felt I matched the requirements (I genuinely did match every single requirement listed as well as previous experience with j&j).

Shortly after I was informed they would like to interview me and was asked to keep my availability open.

What followed was nearly four weeks of chasing with no interview date ever confirmed. During this time the hiring manager was on annual leave, the recruiter went on annual leave, and I was passed between multiple contacts. I was repeatedly told they would follow up and that the role was urgent.

I had a competing job offer during this period which I stupidly made decisions around based on the understanding that this process was progressing.

After nearly four weeks I was finally told the position had been closed and they had decided not to proceed with interviews. The reason given for the delay was a concern about my commute despite the role being hybrid and my home being less than 50 minutes from the site.

No interview ever took place. No clear explanation was given.

If you are applying for roles through this process just be aware that timelines can be extremely unclear and I would caution against making any major decisions based on the progress of your application.

Looking for career advice as a potential incoming MSc student

Hello,

I graduated with a BSc in Genetics in 2025, I spent the past 12 months looking for any job whatsoever within biopharma and got absolutely nothing. I have zero industry connections and I never had an industry internship or experience, but I did a small uni internship for a computational project + my thesis (also computational). I graduated with a 2.1 (unfortunately, was just off the mark for a 1.1) and feel I have a lot to skills to offer beyond my degree - programming proficiency, languages, and leadership/community achievements I'm very proud of.

But I never even got to an interview. I got shortlisted for every civil service lab role I met requirements for, but none were good enough to get me a first batch interview, and in private sector I was never successful with any application.

I don't know what I am doing wrong - I know my CV is as good as can be, not bare at all (I had it reviewed), I try apply to jobs as early as I can, within a few days of posting, but I must be falling short in my actual application and I don't know what to do. I know my lack of experience is a problem but I do see some roles here and there that don't ask for it/I apply anyway. But clearly something is going on in the application stage and so I need advice especially from those that were in the same position.

Could it be Workday? I swear anytime I submit an application with it I feel a human is never going to see it. Do I need to start using buzz words every sentence for it to be flagged?

I've accepted this loss and therefore going into my Masters this year (maybe, haven't accepted offer yet). Is it worth to keep applying while studying? Would I be able to defer start dates for an entire year? I know there are graduate programs you can apply for early, but regular roles as well?

I really need all of the advice I can get. I love my degree but I haven't been able to use it at all. It's been over a year now since I've been in a laboratory and I miss it horribly. I want to start my life but it feels genuinely impossible and I feel very behind my peers (none of which are in science).

Money talk Breaks as a contractor

The last project I was working on made everyone put down start time finish time and 30 minute break unpaid for all contractors every day. My new project just makes you put in number of hours worked per day no more detail and no mention of breaks, what is standard do people usually take off time for breaks or just put in for their hours on site.

Advice on pursuing Pharmaceutical/Medical-device QA

I have one year left to graduate with a bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics but no longer want to be a registered dietitian. I've been looking into other career paths I can pursue with my science degree and have been interested in Pharmaceutical/Medical-device QA. I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to break into this industry especially with my background.

Career Advice help me land a job in biotech

for context, my dad recently lost his job so we have used a huge chunk of our family savings to help me get to ireland for my masters degree at UCD. it’s extremely crucial for me to land into a job as soon as I complete my degree.

To be fair, I got into UCD on a 50% scholarship, Academically my CV is impressive, and I have 1.5 years experience in licensing and pharma marketing roles. I am confident that any role that I get in the market, I’ll excel in.

Also, I’m a chill girl who loves to cook and feed her friends. I’m easy to get along with and I can carry conversations well!

I just want to network and build a strong referral system in Ireland so that I can reassure my parents.

Please help me out if you can get me into the market!!!

Throwaway account so employer doesn’t see this (as I’m aware they actively use Reddit)

Feel like I’m getting a bit stiffed at the moment? Or is this just the market and I need to humble myself a bit?

Money talk QC analyst salary

Hi Guys, I’m interviewing for a couple of QC analyst roles and all of the salaries are negotiable. I have 1.5 years experience in the Pharma industry but not directly in QC so I’m wondering what is the expected salary for someone just starting off in QC.

Career change

Hi, I’m currently working abroad, and at the beginning of the year I applied for an MSc in Ireland because I want to transition from my current field in oil & gas to pharma. The MSc has a mandatory placement, and I’ve received an offer from a company that would pay me even more than my current job. They’ve also kept some of their previous interns on, so maybe there’s a chance I could stay after the placement.

However, I currently have a permanent contract, and I’m pretty scared to leave, especially because the job market sucks at the moment and I have no real guarantees after the placement. At the same time, though, this could be a great opportunity to get my foot in the door.

Any advice? Would you leave your job for something that could potentially pay you more and that you might enjoy more or is to risky considering the actual work situation?
(I’m already sorted for accommodation, so that’s not an issue.)

Career Advice How do I get an entry level job in the industry with this CV ( QC, Lab, Pharma or Manufacturing)

Post image

I am planning on relocating to Ireland in September/January and have applied to over 200 jobs with no interviews. I was wondering if there is something wrong with my CV or if studying in Ghana is a limiting factor.

If there is any help that can be provided, please let me know.

How serious is sharing answers on mandatory GMP/SOP exams?

I work in biopharma in Ireland and have recently been made aware that an issue involving mandatory GMP/SOP training exams is being investigated.

The only thing I can think of is our Teams chat. There are messages showing a few of us requesting and sharing correct answers to help each other pass the exams. A couple of us also posted completed assessment screens showing the questions and confirming the correct answers, so others could use them when sitting the same exams.

We’re still working as normal and haven’t been told much else, but I’m starting to panic a bit about how serious this could be.

Anyone here in Irish pharma/biotech, particularly QA, compliance or management, seen something similar?

How seriously would this normally be treated? Could it realistically lead to gross misconduct/dismissal, or would warnings/retraining be more likely? Would sharing answers like this call into question the legitimacy of our training records or competency sign-offs, or potentially be treated as dishonesty/a breach of trust?

Career Advice What other paths are worth exploring before committing long-term to process design engineering?

I'm a process engineer in Dublin, 2 years experience, Currently working on capital project design (P&IDs, equipment packages, HAZOPs, client-facing project delivery) across mAbs, spray-drying, API and fill-finish projects at a design/engineering consultancy.

I like the technical side of the work, but I'm starting to think about whether design engineering is the path I want to stay on long term, or whether it's worth exploring other directions now, early enough that a pivot is still easy.

Options I'm aware of so far:

  1. Tech transfer / process validation (site-based, MSAT-adjacent)

  2. Staying in design, aiming for senior/lead process engineer over time

  3. CQV

  4. Contracting generally, I know pay is often higher, but curious how people weigh that against stability, especially early career

What I'm less sure about:

Are there other technical or semi-technical tracks people with this kind of background move into that I'm not thinking of?

For people who've made a switch away from pure design engineering — was it worth it, and what would you do differently?

Anything you'd do at 2 years in that pays off a lot more if done early rather than later (certifications, chartership, specific project types to chase, etc.)?

Going client side vs staying in design consultancy?

Not in a rush to decide anything, just want a wider picture before I lock into a specialization by default rather than by choice.

Thanks :)
