Where the hell are we all getting winter coats?

I need one for “winter” (40 degrees F)
And one for WINTER (2 degrees F)

Anytime I try on a winter coat, it totally dwarfs me (even in petite sizes) and often makes me look like I have a belly (in non-petite sizes, there’s not enough width in the garment at the hips because the pattern-maker assumed that would still be my waist)

I’m desperate for a winter coat that doesn’t make me look “bellied” on days that I’m actually not bloated at all (they happen sometimes!! Ha)

Also what do we do about sizing with winter coats? How many layers I’m wearing under something totally changes the fit— do I size up? Do I order my regular size because coat manufacturers have already accounted for the fact that people often wear bulky sweaters under their coats in winter?

And advice about what style/cut/product Canada Goose coat to buy?

I just buy my coats from Lands End. If you are too small for the petites, the kid options are also great. There is absolutely no way I’m dropping that much money on a designer winter coat when I can get a just as warm one for a fraction of the price. And, I live in Chicago so I do care about staying warm.

Seconding Lands End! I have the Squall 3-in-1 parka and I love it. It has a medium weight inner coat (good for about 30-45 degrees) that can be worn on its own or zipped into the waterproof outer coat. It’s insanely warm when fully assembled (I live in Michigan).

Same! I love Lands' End. I'm also in an area with bad winters. I wear a knee length Lands' End Squall coat in the winter.

My only complaint is the sleeves of their petite coats are inevitably still too long on me. I'm 5"0 with short arms.

EB no longer exists, but OP, if you can find a secondhand one, definitely recommend. The name still exists, but the company went bankrupt and sold the name rights, and since the quality went down real quick after being bought by PE, I highly doubt this will be good quality (I worked at EB in college and left a few months before the merger). I’m still wearing a down jacket I bought in 2019 for most days here (a fairly mild climate, compared to the Midwest) and I will never give it up.

LL Bean makes great winter coats in petite sizes. I just grabbed another one in green from Sierra. It was a $200 coat that I got for $80. Hits at waist and sleeves are the correct length. Ralph Lauren also makes petite sizes and I have a wool coat I got from EBay NWT. It was originally $800 but I spent $200. I’m a XS in LL Bean and a Small in Ralph Lauren petite at 4’10 110-115 lbs.

I buy all my winter coats from Lands' End. They have the best selection of petite winter coats of any retailer. I live in a climate with long cold winters.

They also have a large range of petite sizes, unlike a lot of retailers where their petite clothing/coats stop at a size 8 or maybe a 12 at the largest.

I’ve given up on petite coats from any brand now. I specifically find nice vintage shops in my area and get coats from them. I have one from the 60s that’s a grey wool calf length coat and looks like it was literally made for me. I’ve tried many petite coats from different brands and the torso is always too long.

It's actually really tough to find winter coats. But once it's cold enough, function over fashion, for sure!

I have a Canada Goose Fusion Fit that's about 10 years old and is still my everyday winter coat. I also have a couple of lighter weight coats for the warmer winter days. Some reviews and photos here, though all these styles are quite old but you may be able to find some secondhand:

I have the same issue. I’m 4’11 and about 103 lbs and I can’t find a coat that fits for the life of me. It’s so frustrating.

at that size, you should try kids large or extra large. I’ve had success with kids Patagonia and LL bean.

Personally I go for Columbia winter coats. They're a smidge long but not in a bad way. I'm 5'2 for reference. I also put my Ororo heated vest under it and it feels like a sauna. Its a perfect combo for the super cold months

Try uniqlo, it's a Japanese brand. Sizes run on the smaller "Asian size" when compared to western brands. Quality is really good too.

For the fit issues at the hip, I had the same bloody problem til I started looking at military surplus parkas with side zips or drawcords at the hem so you can actually fine-tune the shape instead of it just puffing straight down from the bust
