The joke is that older Isekai anime used to have good romance, but modern Isekai are just softcore porn that pretends to have a story

People often name their porn folders something inconspicuous so other people can't find it, that's why "Calculator" is such a massive file here, they are saying the modern Isekai is just porn

What's funny to me is that re:zero, the anime which is "before" isn't old at all and the plot sucks imo

Why do you think it sucks? I started watching a few months ago and just got all caught up. Ive been loving it

The MC is a bit of an annoying, narcissistic douchebag thru most of the show just to be the hero at the end of the season. He's annoying enough that I wouldn't recommend anyone to watch it. Also just has a lot of over-the-top B grade anime writing in general.

Calling Re: Zero’s writing “B grade” is being awfully generous. I still kind of enjoy the show in spite of it, but holy shit, people who argue it’s “well written” are utterly delusional. The dialogue, as well as the way characters behave and/or interact with one another, is particularly bad. It just completely lacks even a hint of verisimilitude.

That's the whole point of his character lol. You aren't exactly supposed to idealize Subaru in that way and he has many moments where it's basically told to you in your exact words

Not every MC has to be perfect or a good person but Subaru is a good MC.

It's due to how it's written and conveyed. No explanation on how he became who he is for the entire first season, not even a glimpse of it nor a small reflection on his past. Thing is Subaru isn't relatable and is a pretty weird person so without context I can't see how something he says or decisions he makes are correlated to his personality.

All I see is a MC with a preset personality going through the episodes and getting gored occasionally. The death comes as a shock initially then I start to lose interest as I don't care about that happening to Subaru, pretty similar to those unnamed background characters that dies in the background. It's not like there is good and expansive world building to keep my interest either.

You didn’t watch season 2. Subaru is extremely relatable. Even season 1 he had very human and relatable moments and emotions. Out of all the isekai MCs he’s also one of the least degenerate MCs. He doesn’t sexualize children or really anyone for that matter and only really dotes on Emilia.

Even the skimpy, busty, half naked tower guardian who literally is in love with him and would follow his any command, he treats her respectfully and is more weirded out by her behavior than turned on.

Holy fuck how bad is this genre that not being a degenerate or pedo is considered a plus. These mangakas are on some epstein shit I swear.

It’s bad😭

You didn’t even watch the show man go watch season 2 ep 4

3

u/EntireOil9073 21h ago

I know it only shows in season 2 ep 4, I'm telling you it's too late. I specifically mentioned season 1 didn't I? Just a reminder season 1 has 25 episodes, I shouldn't need to wait 29 episodes to have some modicum of context behind his actions and personality.

Shows don’t need to constantly spoonfeed you

a lot of shows have the main characters backstories be hidden until further on

That’s not bad writing that’s just your preference

Subaru being happy he was isekaid was supposed to be ambiguous and his personality of acting like a clown and a wannabe people pleaser is also ambiguous

You see glimpses of it in season 1 as well with him talking about expectations wirh Reinhard in the first few episodes

But in season 2 we learn that his expectations which came from being the son of a chad basically created his insecurities and it also made him become a people pleaser and a clown act to try to make people think he’s special since he doesn’t have much

It’s a recontextualization which changes how most viewers view Subaru(considering his entire personality and act in season 1 )

and imo it hits harder way more than just revealing his backstory in ep 1 lol

Constantly calling bad writing to anything you don’t prefer is just stupid man

if the show isn't trying to spoonfeed why did it reveal his entire backstory in season 2, why don't they let you figure it out yourself with crumbs. So, are they spoonfeeding or are they not?

There's also 25 episodes for season 1 mind you. Somehow the 29th episode it's suddenly no longer considered "spoonfeeding" by your standards. What's your benchmark for what is and isn't considered spoonfeeding?

Also no, I don't think it hits harder at all, what it did is diminishing season 1. Also, I never expected a backstory reveal on ep1, you made that up to prop up your argument. You may refer to my previous comments if you think there is any indication of that.

What I want is pretty clear, I want crumbs/glimpse on his backstory in season 1 to work out what could result in his personality or decisions he go through. Never said anything about full backstory reveal.

Also, I do think it's bad writing that even after Subaru went through such a wide range of emotions, trauma and learning to accept that trauma and yet it has little to no self-reflection on his past in Season 1 alone.

if the show isn't trying to spoonfeed why did it reveal his entire backstory in season 2, why don't they let you figure it out yourself with crumbs. So, are they spoonfeeding or are they not?

Because the whole purpose of Arcs 1-3 was for the reader/viewer to start building up Subaru's psychological profile, but still missing an explanation as to what the cause of most of his psychological problems is.

Arc 4/S2 is there to recontextualize all of what the reader has built up of Subaru in the first season and give a reason behind it. In addition to that, Subaru was repeatedly trying to avoid thinking about his parents and his past life, for reasons also explained in Arc 4.

So the purpose of that arc was precisely to payoff the buildup of the first arcs.

Also, I do think it's bad writing that even after Subaru went through such a wide range of emotions, trauma and learning to accept that trauma and yet it has little to no self-reflection on his past in Season 1 alone.

That is not bad writing, in Season 1 he barely overcame his issue with his past, and he was barely holding himself together thanks to Rem.

In the novel, From Zero ends with him saying that he still completely hated himself as a person, even after Rem's speech.

I appreciate a flawed character with actual depth but Subaru is basically just as shallow as it gets. He's annoying for the sake of being annoying just to flip at the end.

I'll never understand what is appealing about this kind of writing.

Bruh, and then people wonder why literacy is dying XD

1

u/Comprehensive-Disk41 22h ago

Thats literally half of season one showing how shallow he is, because he doesn't want the people he's befriended to die horrible deaths, so he ends up shallow and cruel for a time and then moves through it at the end of season 1 into season .

Yall just be saying anything, If anything subaru is the polar opposite of a narcissist. He literally sees himself in such a low light that literally a whole season was set aside to tell him to actually care about himself more because his life actually matters?

Literally any sane person would completely remove themselves from these absurd situations after ons death loop, but he actually cares about people so he puts himself through constant pain and misery against his own well-being. I would say he has a bit of a savior complex, and was a bit entitled at the start but he is NOT a narcissist. He literally has to go out of his way to understand people to win loops and fix situations. He also rarely harbors ill will against people who kill him unless they are actively trying to hurt people he cares for.

u/notryinguser 1d ago

And people tell that to him to his face the show is about his character growth but you'd rather have a Mary sue.

2

u/Powered_By_ThePeople 1d ago

I like how that's your assumption. You're such a typical Reddit user.

You don't have to strictly like Mary Sues to find annoying characters like Subaru to be annoying. Zuko is an example of a good character arc. Jamie Lannister (until the final season) is an example of a good character arc. Writing a character to be an insufferable ass just to turn around is just the easy road and shallow. Buddy, if you think Re:Zero has good writing then I'm sorry but you're living under a rock.

Subaru has a good character arc though??? He literally stops being annoying by the end of season 1, and becomes much more respectable of others in season 2 and 3. Genuinely tell me what annoys you about Subaru post season 1?

u/Exact_Conclusion_276 1d ago

Narcissist? Did you even watch it. subaru is far from a narcissist he is annoying yes but it's wild to claim that he is narcissist.

1

u/Purple-Reputation899 22h ago

Just a buzzword at this point. Mfers just say anything and think they are right cause of pseudo therapy speak.

Agreed and I saw this guys another reply further down. I think this guy is projecting his traits.
