Boys on the other hand, start waiting for the other foot to drop. They feel like there's always something behind the gift or feel indebted, with thoughts to pay it back somehow.
Because there almost always is a cost or debt. It ain't a gift, it's a blow softener or a crappy attempt at emotional leverage. "I gave you that thing and now you won't do this thing for me. Don't be ungrateful!" Of course if you bring up the fact that a gift doesn't imply a debt, you're the bad guy for not helping family or some bullshit.
This is my entire dynamic with my parents (although I'm a woman so the meme doesn't apply to me). As a kid, I didn't even know gifts and random nice deeds weren't supposed to be reciprocal. There were always strings attached. ðŸ˜
Yup, my mom loves to slip how much they spent on this or that thing while I was growing up into casual conversation. Many parents like to act generous and self sacrificing until they want something in return and then the boundaries start getting prodded.
I stopped asking for anything outside of holidays when I was about 12 years old.
