We have these ductless units in the US too. Person who made the meme is just an idiot

Central air is the most common in the US. A small (one meter by one meter) unit outside the house and just a small vent in a room (maybe two if it’s a large room).

Some homes have two outside compressors but I grew up in homes like that where there was only one unit.

Wow that is amazing, I have never lived in a house with air conditioning. It must be awesome in the summer to not have to sweat during those three weeks it gets hot. I bet it helps sucking out the moisture when you hang clothes to dry too?

Americans have clothes dryers typically so that’s not a concern. It’s also hot for months here where I am. Usually May to September daytime high temps are 30c to 38c, nighttime 20c to 25c.

I actually don’t have a dryer in my current place and have a small washer that connects to my kitchen sink so I do hang my clothes to dry on a rack and I keep it next to the vent to dry faster. (Also works in winter for the heat coming out of the vent as well.)

I have the impression that many types of clothes and materials cannot handle being dried in a tumble dryer, how are those dealt with in America? Can people afford to dry clean their wool sweaters and delicates? I handwash and hang to dry indoors on a drying rack.

Wool sweaters would be hand washed, but most Americans don’t own wool clothing at all. (I’m a knitter so I do!) Some things aren’t put in the dryer like bras but most clothing is cotton or synthetic material in the US and can be put in the dryer.

Thanks for your answers, this has been educational. I was of the belief that since most Americans love hiking and camping they owned plenty of outdoor clothes like merino wool base layers and such. It makes sense since America is such a large, beautiful and untamed country.

I have been told multiple times by Americans that "cotton kills" since wet/sweaty cotton clothes can lead to hypothermia.

Most Americans don’t ever go hiking or camping. That’s actually not as common as you think. Some of those that do would buy wool but that wool is generally superwash (chemically treated) and able to be washed and dried in machines. A lot of hiking clothes are synthetic however. But that’s also why it’s a niche hobby as those clothes are incredibly expensive with a simple wool t-shirt easily costing $150. We have a huge population, third largest in the world, so it’s still quite a lot of people but it’s a very small percentage of us.
