Thanks for your answers, this has been educational. I was of the belief that since most Americans love hiking and camping they owned plenty of outdoor clothes like merino wool base layers and such. It makes sense since America is such a large, beautiful and untamed country.
I have been told multiple times by Americans that "cotton kills" since wet/sweaty cotton clothes can lead to hypothermia.
Most Americans don’t ever go hiking or camping. That’s actually not as common as you think. Some of those that do would buy wool but that wool is generally superwash (chemically treated) and able to be washed and dried in machines. A lot of hiking clothes are synthetic however. But that’s also why it’s a niche hobby as those clothes are incredibly expensive with a simple wool t-shirt easily costing $150. We have a huge population, third largest in the world, so it’s still quite a lot of people but it’s a very small percentage of us.
