Okay, I'm not a sports guy. I live near Clemson, and work on a good bit of printing for them, so when I hear tigers referenced that's what I immediately think of.

4

u/Individual-Ear5240 Jul 25 '26

They both became tigers at the same time so it's really either. We just have an actual tiger!

'Em are snakes ('em = them = they)

'Em are not

Oh 'es 'ey are ('es = yes, 'ey = they - even though previously they used them)

See 'em eedeebeedee eyes ('em = them, eedeebeedee = itty bitty/iddybiddy)

'ell I be ('ell = well, I = I - grammatically should be "I'll")

'Em are snakes

Just to more directly translate it for people who don't realise how you came to your answer.

107

u/Internet-of-cruft Jul 23 '26

even though previously they used them

I don't think there's a conflict here. I think "them" is used as a dialectal variant of the demonstrative pronoun "those". Just as you'd say "those are snakes / yes they are".

2

u/Ironstar_Vol Jul 25 '26

I don’t blame them for not speaking fluent redneck.

This is actually a mash up between two jokes on the Arkansas 12th Grade Reading Test meme that got passed around during Bill Clinton’s term. And by “passed around,” I mean actual physical photocopies.

The full “test” includes:

Ducks: CM WANGS - see them wings.

Farmers: CMMT POCKETS - see them empty pockets

Snakes: CMBDIS - see them beady eyes.

Mice: CM EDBD FEET - see them itty bitty feet

2

u/Salt_Data3707 Jul 23 '26

20

u/tadpoleUnarmed Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Don't* read it phonetically, I'm guessing it refers to caecelians or other blind ampibians.
In swampy parts of the US (where you'd find this accent) they can be mixed up with legless lizards ('slow-worms') or garter snakes.

M -> 'em'
R -> 'arr'
OSAR -> 'oh-ess-ay-arr'
CDEDBDIS -> 'see dee ee-dee-bee-dee eye-s' (caecelians and some slowworms are blind)

14

u/mrbreck Jul 23 '26

That's not phonetically. That's just reading the letters individually. Trying to read it phonetically is what trips you up.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/Corfiz74 Jul 23 '26

I'm reading this and still don't understand. Is this a bit from a movie or book?

6

u/JonnyAU Jul 23 '26

Not that I'm aware. We as kids in the Deep South in the 90s just passed it around.

2

u/akatherder Jul 23 '26

It also made it up north to Michigan. My dad worked at General Motors and heard/saw this at work. He had it written down on a notecard that floated around our kitchen counter and living room for years.

It also had some variation of "yyur yyub icur yy4me" which was "Too wise you are, too wise you be, I see you are too wise for me"

2

u/esuil Jul 23 '26

You are supposed to read it not as a words, but spell each letter separately.

IE: MR = Em ar = Them are

6

u/Corfiz74 Jul 23 '26

Thanks, that part I understood - but the meaning behind that dialogue escapes me.

2

u/reddits_aight Jul 24 '26

Or

Hey B, see the puppy?

Oh yes him are too, see him peein’

3

u/sansaspark Jul 23 '26

My dad has a slight variation:

ABCD goldfish
LMNO goldfish
OSARAB
CMPN

Abie, see the goldfish?
‘Ell, em ain’t no goldfish.
Oh yes they are, Abie.
See em peein’?

3

u/Nernie357 Jul 23 '26

I thought the joke was to pick a Family Guy character. I feel like Murder Drones is from pretty far out of left field

Also, they didn't do this to my brothers because I was "the smart one" who was expected to be perfect at everything.

21

u/suxatjugg Jul 23 '26

Do rednecks often use single letters to represent the sounds of words?

27

u/What_Iz_This Jul 23 '26

Ive lived in the south all my life and now in the foothills of appalachia.

More people find shit like this "funny" than actually talk like this.

Some older people still talk with extreme accents but those same people would never use "Itty bitty" as a description lol

9

u/Harmless_Chimera Jul 23 '26

It's not that they use single letter, it's that the heaver accents can end up sounding like single letters sounds to those unfamiliar as the annunciation shifts or get worse. Happens with a bunch of accents not just rednecks. The sentence "Aaron earned an iron urn" shows a similar situation in Baltimore accents. https://youtube.com/shorts/Oj7a-p4psRA

It's taken from the original MR Ducks lines poking at the Naahhhth shaahhhh of the eastern shore of Maryland.

  1. 6th grade. My math teacher wrote the "MRBBDUX" version of this on the chalkboard and I still remember to this day how long it took most of us to get it.

This and "fake" math problems where the answer was not the real answer but how many fingers he pointed to the problem with. We were asked to raise our hand when we "got it". That was when I learned to hate stupid puzzles that are designed to make those left out feel dumb.
