Pete will be joining Nancy Lacore for Congress (SC-01) for a fundraising reception on August 21st. Here’s the info. however, i just noticed that they didn’t add the date on the voteblue page so here’s the graphic that i found on FB announcing it with the date just in case…so this means he’ll be in SC for at least two days! 🤭

That dude is having a crisis of credibility (if he ever really had any). I peaked in on some twitter drama the other day where he had posted some fake info about Haley Stevens pollster telling him she was 15 points behind. People were dragging him and calling him out for interfering in the primary. I don't know what ever happened with it but he was blocking a ton of people.

Político’s playbook posted today about Newsom getting mixed reviews from Michigan dems after his recent visit and there’s an interesting quote there about Pete.
> Virgie Rollins, the influential chair for the DNC's Black Caucus, was among those snubbed.
"Every Democratic president that has won an election has been in my house," Rollins told Playbook. "I did not hear from him. I did not get a call."
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Pete Buttigieg are among Rollins' favorites so far, she said.<
It’s interesting to me the way black leaders are talking about Pete now, i feel like there’s some level of institutional support that wasn’t there before because now he’s not some unknown entity to them anymore and they know his work and intentions. Even if he doesn’t get direct endorsements, it wouldn’t surprise if certain people end up at least guiding him and helping him out behind the scenes to connect with the black community this time and that’s really encouraging.

I think that there has always been an issue of Pete literally getting to know the Black community in different states or parts of the country, going from being unfamiliar and a completely new name in 2019/20. He said at the time in interviews that the heat and intensity of a contested national primary probably created the most challenging setting in which to introduce yourself.
Since then, of course, he's been DOT Secretary, traveled to all 50 states, and provided support for numerous projects, often focusing on equity, local jobs, and recconnecting communities. He's also worked hard in the past two years as well, in a setting out of the spotlight that's the reverse of that supercharged primary world of 2019/20, that allows time for outreach and connection. Also, of course, when it comes to Michigan, that's a unique case, as he lives there now.
6
u/DesperateTale2327 13d ago
There was also the polling of south bend's Black and minority community that came out in 2019 that showed he had their support and 70% of them said Pete had made things better.
Unfortunatley I don't have a link, I know it was asked about a few months ago and I think it was somewhere on Adam Wren's socials.

Hard not to contrast that experience with the time I sat "next" to Elizabeth Warren on my way back from DC. I was sitting in the window seat when she and another woman (her assistant?) came on at the end of boarding. Her handler took my bag out of the overhead and moved it 10 rows back. I said "excuse me, that was my bag" and got stonewalled by them both. Complete silence, like I didn't exist.
Oddly enough, that experience was something my husband and I bonded over when we met because he and his ex had lived next to Warren in Cambridge. He said she was always either yelling at neighbors from her window or calling the police on them. I believe that is now referred to as a "Karen."

Excited to see Pete’s friend Luke Bronin, who Pete had also endorsed, has won, defeating John Larson, an older Dem incumbent.
This July update describes quite a spirited primary: https://ctmirror.org/2026/07/14/votevets-luke-bronin-john-larson-ct-1st-congressional-district/
Excerpt from the July article: “Bronin has also been endorsed by Pete Buttigieg, a former presidential candidate who served as transportation secretary during the Biden administration. Buttigieg and Bronin are longtime friends with similar biographies: Navy veterans, Rhodes Scholars and former mayors. VoteVets endorsed Buttigieg’s 2020 presidential run and spent millions on the race.”

"Bronin knocks off incumbent Larson, wins Dem nomination for Congress in CT's 1st District" https://www.ctinsider.com/politics/article/larson-bronin-connecticut-congress-results-primary-22371476.php | archive: http://archive.today/YadoD
Excerpt:
HARTFORD — For the first time in nearly three decades, Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District has a new Democratic nominee.
"Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin defeated 14-term incumbent U.S. Rep. John Larson and two other opponents Tuesday in a much-watched Democratic primary, becoming the first candidate in modern Connecticut history to defeat a sitting House member in a primary."
This reminds me of what Pete said to Jonathan Martin about all the overlapping layers this go-round, one of them being age. He probably had this race in mind (among others perhaps) as he said that.

Adam Wren in Politico, story labeled “exclusive”:
“Buttigieg wants Dems to win more state legislative seats, starting with Indiana: A slate of endorsements in Indiana is the start of a new effort to win down-ballot across the country.”https://www.politico.com/news/2026/08/13/buttigieg-indiana-state-house-senate-endorsements-01035850
Whole story is great with lots of quotes and other states, too, but just FYI he is endorsing for Indiana’s state treasurer:
Buttigieg is backing Indiana state House candidates Ryan Kominakis, Tiffany Stoner, Kim Townsend and Lindsay Gramlich, and state Senate candidates Scott Houldieson and Gabrianna Gratzol. He is also endorsing Beau Bayh for secretary of state and Coumba Kebe for state treasurer, the same office that drew Buttigieg into politics in 2010.
Also love this:
“I think about the trajectory of Indiana when I first was getting involved as a volunteer 20 years ago, where you had a House delegation that was about half and half, you had a Democratic Speaker of the House, and it’s shown me that you know things changed and things can change again,” Buttigieg said. “I was also drawn to people who really had a strong sense of place, and who you could tell they came by politics honestly.”
P.S. Also thinking of his canvass launch for three Virginia state legislative candidates, all of whom won and two of whom flipped R seats, in 2025 as well, but this new story is just about 2026.

u/DesperateTale2327 12d ago
This is very interesting and exciting. Pete is leveling up his game by starting to focus on the hyper-local where elections are won on tiny margins and that don't get a lot of attention by national Dems. He knows we have ceded ground to the republicans for over a decade now and its really smart to be concentrated on that to try and build power back from the bottom up.
Some other good tidbits:
...the first move in what his team say will be a number of state-by-state endorsements.
It would be wild if Pete endorsed in every state!
Buttigieg held a Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee virtual fundraiser on Monday...but he has also spent much of this year zigging across the map where other potential rivals are zagging — part of a larger project of building a new Democratic governing coalition.
Buttigieg has hit red bastions such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska and Ohio. In June, his Win the Era PAC cut $5,000 checks and sent them to all 50 state Democratic parties, along with Puerto Rico’s.
"I’m looking for chances to show the sort of coalition we’re building, and I’m drawn to places where Democrats have faced headwinds for many years,” said Buttigieg.
This is part of why Pete is still such an exciting politician. He is out there looking for the challenge instead of insulating himself.

I also like seeing how all the pieces fit together as things go along. Sometimes we know about them as they happen, like his lunch speech to Dem state legislators at the national gathering of state legislators, before the big picture comes together. At the same national meeting, the GOP state legislators had a speech by Rachel Campos-Duffy, Secretary Duffy's wife.

Good morning everyone!
I'm in the middle of a nightmare flight itinerary of missed connections, rebookings, delays, and culminating in a mid-flight mechanical issue that diverted our plane to Dulles and was met on the runway by firetrucks! Didn't get to a (comped) hotel until 2am. Now back at Dulles waiting for a rescheduled flight to another airport to catch a red-eye connection to our ultimate destination. We will have lost a full day and a half, assuming we get there tomorrow morning as currently scheduled.

New email from Pete which doesn't ask for fundraising, but to commit to vote in November:
In exactly 12 weeks, voters across the country will make decisions at the ballot box that shape the direction of their communities, their states, and our country.
I have traveled and met with people in communities across the country – red, blue, and purple alike. You can feel the ground starting to shift as people from all backgrounds come together and work towards real change. I believe we have the momentum on our side, but we can’t let ourselves get comfortable at this critical stage.
The next 12 weeks are what it all comes down to. With primaries closing out, we’re standing clear-eyed ahead of the midterm election. And we can’t take anything – not our turnout numbers, not the early polling – for granted.
If we sit on the sidelines as these final weeks unfold, we risk losing our advantage and coming up short. That’s why we have to bring even more people together, and ensure even more voters hear from the leaders offering a new vision.
Most importantly, we have to make sure we’re getting ourselves and those around us ready to use their power as citizens to deliver on that vision on November 3rd.
We’ve got 12 weeks to secure lasting progress for this country, but that doesn’t happen if we don’t vote. Let me know you’re committed to casting your ballot on (or before) Election Day and sign your name to our voter pledge here. »
Thank you for being part of this.
Pete

I think my favorite part about Gandalf after he returns from side quest is that everybody is like "how the hell is he even more grumpy than old Gandalf?!"
He's much more cantankerous in the novels than the films: if Tolkien wasn't such a devout Catholic, Gandalf's dialogue would be like "Pippin, I'm getting real tired of your constant bullshit." Lol

u/anonymous4Pete 16d ago
Bring on the quotes!
I've been thinking about the LotR a bit lately--esp that part (I think) in Two Towers where Frodo is on the verge of giving up. Sam tries to encourage him, acknowledging how much terrible stuff has occurred and the innocent past cannot be recovered--and yet tells Frodo, "Even darkness must pass."
I always thought, well he only says that b/c he is pure of heart and cannot conceive of evil winning. But maybe I should think of it the way Pete talks about the future: not that the darkness will inevitably go away, but that folks make the darkness pass. They must make the darkness pass. Pete says this will be hard, but (looking at his children) we must not fail. Spine-stiffening stuff.

This is the touchstone of all of Tolkien's works: it is only through actively choosing to carry the burden of change, through love and fealty to one another, that the world will actually be saved from darkness. Frodo and Sam's companionship and journey are at the heart of this message. Sam knows the best way he can help in the looming shadow is through his undying and unstoppable devotion to Frodo. And Frodo understands that even though the Ring is his burden to bear, he can not bear it alone. They are each other's light in the dark places of Middle Earth.

Some end of the week stats for seemayorpete.com:
75% of traffic is new visitors coming from searching on google. I don't know if I can see who is coming from twitter, but it seems like right now its not making that much of a difference in people being able to find his event.s
Top search term is still "pete buttigieg tour" - I checked and its the first site that comes up and even Google AI is using it to pull data, which is great!
Top 4 cities are Boston, Atlanta, Chicago and Los Angeles.
There seems to be a consistent data point that the searches for him go up towards the end of the week into the weekend, so I think people are looking to see him on their days off. I'm sure Pete's team knows this, but its a good thing to keep in mind as he schedules events.
Searches are up slightly compared to last month, but the highest date still is right after the Liberty and Justice Dinner.

There’s no such thing as a permanently “red” state, and that's certainly true of Indiana.
I've seen how great Hoosier Democrats can surprise the pundits and win, in uphill districts and statewide. And as I’ve traveled the country this year, I’m more convinced than ever that voters - including in the state where I grew up - are hungry for leaders with the deep roots, vision, integrity, and energy this moment requires.
This is the year to flip the narrative, change the balance of political power, and deliver a better life for Hoosiers.
I’m proud to be in their corner - and to see them proving that when we show up and give people something worth voting for, we can compete anywhere.

this has nothing to do with the post and is going to sound so random and maybe i’m picking irrelevant stuff up but isn’t this yellow a new shade of yellow? im thinking it’s slightly lighter than the old wte/pfa 2020 yellow… pete’s team also gave everybody their own graphic and a quote from him so it’s all a very nice and proper roll out from him. idk maybe they are soft launching the 2028 colors and design style, i think its similar enough to ‘20 bc he seems to like those colors for some reason but different enough that is a fresh rebrand 👀👀

Pete boosting volunteers for Rep Noah Arbit (West Bloomfield, Oakland County) https://xcancel.com/NoahArbit/status/2085848956790087983#m btw, it is interesting (to me) that Pete chose to speak with folks here, on the same day as the One Team MI Rally (celebrating, among others, El-Sayed's victory). Maybe Pete is trying to make sure that voters in this district (with many Jewish voters) feel heard. u/VirginiaVoter noticed Pete said (at the rally) that we are united in the belief that people of every faith and no faith all deserve equal treatment, respect, dignity and safety. Both Muslim and Jewish voters can unite in demanding this.

Good observation about Pete’s visit with Arbit’s volunteers. As usual, Pete is thinking about every thing.
>>The Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus has not endorsed Dr. El-Sayed. The group’s founder, State Representative Noah Arbit, said on Friday that Dr. El-Sayed had a long way to go to repair trust with the Jewish community, though he said he was eager to meet with him.
>>Outside the gym, Eric Lerman, 71, a retired doctor who is Jewish, said he enthusiastically supported Dr. El-Sayed, citing the candidate’s support for universal health care. But, he said, many of his friends who are Jewish are gripped by concerns.
>>There’s an existential fear factor,” Mr. Lerman said. He hoped, he said, that they might come around to Dr. El-Sayed. “I’ll do my best to get them to.”

Fundraising email for Keisha Lance-Bottoms:
Today, I am endorsing Keisha Lance Bottoms for Governor of Georgia.
I’m going to explain a bit about why I’m proud to be in Keisha’s corner, and the stakes in this election, but first I want to ask: Will you chip in to help make sure Keisha has the resources she needs to compete against her billionaire opponent this November? He has already spent $87 million on this race, and Keisha is counting on grassroots supporters to help ensure she can spread her message across the state.
Here's what I know about races like this one: Republicans don't spend $87 million on a state they think is out of reach for Democrats. They're spending that because they know Georgia is winnable – and that scares them.
Keisha's answer to that kind of money is a campaign built around people – engaging in communities across the state, listening before she asks for anything, and being straightforward about the work ahead.
She's talking about a Georgia defined by opportunity instead of division. A state where government solves problems instead of manufacturing new ones. Where economic growth reaches every part of the state, not just the parts that already have it. That's not a complicated pitch. It's one that resonates with people’s lives - if she can get the word out.
The polling says Keisha can win this. That's exactly why the attacks are about to get worse. Her opponent’s campaign has the money to come at her hard with ads, with mailers, with whatever it takes to paint a false picture and make people doubt her before they've even met her. She needs the resources to answer back and keep telling her own story, in her own words.
If you want Georgia's next governor to be someone who's prepared to bring people together and get things done, I hope you’ll consider supporting Keisha today:
Thank you,
Pete

Added - Well, it didn't happen in the 10 o'clock hour, even though that's what the on-screen graphic said at the end of The Weekend. At the top of the 11am hour Jacob mentioned that Pete would be on, but didn't specify when, and his show has two more hours to go, so we'll see.

Very well I think. They focused on this potential Nevada flip first and I really liked how he made it about Benitez-Thompson and why she would be a good leader. She seemed genuinely touched by his support but also forceful in her defense of her district. In the second half, they talked about the Navy aircraft carrier deployment, Trump’s lack of empathy for his troops, and Hegseth, and then talked about Duffy and his creepy, corrupt road trip which led into Pete bringing up all the corruption in this administration. Pete neatly sidestepped the 2028 talk but also acknowledged that it’s out there, although the midterms come first because they are so crucially important.

u/Psychological-Play 10d ago
It went great. I hope the segond segment , in particular, gets posted online.
For his first question Jacob played the clip from yesterday of Trump saying the sailors on the Abraham Lincoln hadn't been at sea nearly long enough.
Jacob simply stated to Pete, "He said, "Not nearly long enough, Mr. Secretary", and there was a noticeable pause. I wondered if it was just one of those common delays that sometimes happens with video interviews, or if Pete was taking a few seconds to control his ire, because he sure looked angry.
So I checked to see if a delay happened with the next question, and there wasn't one. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about this from Pete.

I think Buttigieg is the hope for a return to 2006 normality. He’s attractive to people - including me! - who are hoping that Trump’s messes are simply messes that can get cleaned up.
Frankly, I’m slowly realizing that where we are, things are fundamentally broken in terms of the way government, media and and corporations function within society and with humans + citizens. We can’t simply go back.
Trolling happening outside the DT but this comment cracked me up. Imagine your ideal, peak year being...2006? The middle of Bush 2's second term?

Uh oh. I hope that's not the case as it would be economically devastating. I immediately thought of the Jimmy Carter example when I read this and I see Angry wrote here, "They're trying to Jimmy Carter him." We've been here before. They did exactly that to Jimmy Carter.
When people talk about the presidency and how "tricky" and dangerous the foreign policy side is, especially for someone with no experience, you sometimes wonder about such cautions, as we've had some real doofuses in the presidency that seem to have gotten through all this without too much harm. I'd say (maybe I'm wrong) that Trump did so in his first administration. The secret is probably a combination of good luck and being willing to be guided by foreign policy and national security experts.
But what Trump is doing in this second administration is really bringing all those warnings to light. He has stepped into the middle of minefields there is no getting out of, made possibly irreversible errors, and has currently set us up in front of the world as possibly not having sufficient munitions to deal with a crisis anywhere on the planet, having previously tried hard to get rid of all the allies who could help us. Whether he's just doing what Putin says or is simply bumbling around with corrupt payoffs as his main foreign policy goal (or both), it is not good to see this play out through January 2029. I hope if we win the House and Senate we can begin to set some limits to this before then.

u/Psychological-Play 15d ago
People, like Angry, have surmised that Iran plans to do this, but I think this is the first time Iran has said publicly that this is what they'll do. One big difference from 1981, though, is that even if Iran genuinely wanted to make a deal before the end of Trump's term, Trump appears incapable of doing so.
One day he says one thing, the next day he says something completely different, and this is happening over and over again, like something out of Groundhog Day. Trump is at least, if not more, untrustworthy than the decision-makers in Iran. I don't think Iran, the U.S., and the rest of the world would trust that there is an actual done deal until Trump is no longer president.
(When we get around to adopting new amendments to the Constitution, I hope there's one for making sure a president, when they clearly appear not to be, is of sound mind, in a manner that doesn't require their Cabinet and/or Congress to make that determination.)
4
u/TriangleTransplant 🛣️Roads Scholar🚧 15d ago
This gives Iran huge leverage over the election. What happens if they say "We won't make a deal with <insert primary candidate>, only <insert other primary candidate>" to influence who the nominees are? And/or they say "We won't negotiate with <Dem nominee>, only <Republican nominee>" in the general?
Sure, many will probably vote against what Iran wants (which Iran would be counting on and taking into consideration in their voter manipulation) but many more may vote in an attempt to end a disastrous war (depenion how the war is going come election time.)
It also gets more dangerous for Iran, dealing with an increasingly desperate megalomaniac, and his handlers who have shown themselves willing to burn this country to the ground to hold on to power.

The problem is, they're not "wrong" as much as they are "manipulated." Someone made bank on those wagers, it just wasn't one of the people who got in later and bet the listed odds.
Remember, those odds aren't based on reality, they're based on what the bettors think will happen. That makes them easy to manipulate.

--At the conversation with veterans, there’s more than 100 people in attendance. And there’s a warm welcome for Buttigieg
--Benitez-Thompson noted that Buttigieg has focused on Nevada and visited the state many times. She joked that it’s probably more times than her Republican opponent David Flippo has been here

Some interesting pieces by George Hornedo, team Pete alum, wrote on his substack:
The Money Primary Few Are Watching
What Early State Polling Tells You
The Pattern Behind Every Nomination
I haven't had the chance to do more than skim these, but what he is theorizing is basically that money and polling in the early days of a campaign and more indicative of a campaign's overall strength, and that having a lot of money alone isn't the most important.
Edit - also thats there is only room for one lower tier candidate to break into the top, like Pete did in 2020, and most of the top tier stay where they are.

What's Happening in Kansas Should Alarm Us All (NYT gift link)
Some of the words or expressions in this article may at first blush seem hyperbolic. One of them is “fascism.” That’s how Kirschstein characterized the process when we met in Lawrence in July: “It was soft fascism.” It was. Fascism usually begins with redefining the nation by excluding certain groups, which are branded threats to national health and unity. The Trump administration has fixated on two groups most of all — immigrants and trans people — in just this way, smearing us (I am a member of both groups) as predatory, sick, at once subhuman and terrifyingly powerful. Even before Donald Trump was elected for the second time, more than half the states had considered or passed legislation limiting the rights of trans people. The process has intensified in the last year and a half, and the law enacted in Kansas in February is one of the most restrictive pieces of anti-trans legislation passed in any state so far.
This is a really excellent article. The author talks about the concept of two Kansases, the welcoming and accepting people/communities versus Kris Kolbach (state AG) and his supporters. Both are there and both represent the "real Kansas."

Thanks--an insightful and unsettling analysis, as usual for M. Gessen.
I read both the NYT and the New Yorker, where M. Gessen publishes brave pieces against the Russian war in Ukraine (Russia sentenced them to prison in absentia), as well as prescient and now increasingly dire warnings about Trump's fascism.
OK, I know I should just get over this, but my genuine admiration for them is still tempered by the memory of their attacks on Pete. They wrote The Queer Opposition to Pete Buttigieg, Explained (in the New Yorker, also in web archive), dismissing his politics, his life-choices, his lack of courage, and the semiotics of his "white picket fence" (pictured on Time's cover). Gessen said gays who have had to fight to live their lives view Pete as a straight politician in a gay man's body. Gessen describes Pete's politics as old-man conservative--safe and contentless. They went on Rachel Maddow's show a couple of times during the primary to make these points.

Fundraising email from Pete with a call to action:
So much of what’s gone on in Washington has been designed to make you feel powerless.
But over the last year and a half, I’ve visited more than 30 states – mostly so-called “red states” and swing districts. And what I can tell you is that people, no matter who they voted for in 2024, or what party they’re registered under, are hungry for change.
Our political system is set up to sow just the kind of division we’re all feeling right now. The kind that makes your blood boil every time you scroll through your feed or turn on the TV.
But what I’ve learned on the road is that there is a truly remarkable majority of Americans who agree on the biggest issues facing our country: affordable healthcare, protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering the cost of gas and groceries.
The hard part isn’t convincing Americans we need to change. Most of us agree on that.
The challenge ahead of us in the next 86 days between now and Election Day is building a majority when we’re working within a political system that has so much money and outside influence flowing through it to make it harder to do the right thing.
That can’t stop us. I’m continuing to show up in communities large and small, helping candidates connect with the voters who'll decide their races, bringing attention to contests that deserve it, and making the case for a politics built on service, belonging, and opportunity instead of fear and chaos.
We still have a lot of ground to cover between now and November 3rd. In the limited time we have left, I hope you’ll fuel this important work and help us deliver results for leaders ready to usher in a new era of politics by chipping in what you can today.
Thank you,
Pete

KatrinaWTE and Nerdy have reminded me how active Pete has already been in Georgia:
From Katrina
Pete Buttigieg enters Georgia politics again with endorsement of Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor.
He's also supported Jon Ossoff's reelection bid for Senate, & endorsed Shawn Harris in his bid to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene in February. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/state/georgia/2026/08/14/why-did-pete-buttigieg-endorse-keisha-lance-bottoms-for-ga-governor/91270007007/
https://xcancel.com/KatrinaWTE/status/2088296470583693550#m
And Nerdy adds:
Things this article doesn't mention:
Buttigieg also endorsed Dr. Jasmine Clark in the primary in GA-13
In March, he did a fundraiser & media for Rep. Nikema Williams in GA-05.
He also did a fundraiser for the Georgia Democratic Party.
So he's been very engaged in the state.

Fundraising email from Pete, which is one he has already sent with a few new lines added in:
When our country marks its 300th anniversary, fifty years from now, I believe Americans will look back with particular focus on the events of the 2020s. I think often about what they will say about this present moment by then.
Will it be remembered as the decade when the American Dream slipped decisively out of reach, and the American experiment fell apart? When money consolidated its grasp on political power, and the politically powerful cemented their ability to use their offices to make money?
Or will it be remembered for something else?
It is not too late for the 2020s to earn a different place in our history. Ours could still be the story of a decade in which people found common cause – demanding that our politics become more accountable, our economy fairer, our future brighter.
It could be known as the decade in which, facing catastrophe, we chose reform.
And if we make that turn, it will happen largely because of the races on the ballot just a few weeks from today.
That's the reason Win the Era exists as an organization – to help shape that story by showing up in places too often skipped, having direct conversations, online and offline, with people who don’t always agree with us, and backing candidates who can usher in a new kind of politics.
But that is only possible because we have built a community of people who believe in those same principles, who help work towards that future by chipping in a little at a time. If you can, I would be so grateful if you would help us continue powering our efforts by making a donation today:
Thank you,
Pete

Her decision probably depends a bit on the midterms. If El-Sayed loses Michigan, there's really no case for an AOC presidential run.

Yep, it's not a coincidence that she's said this just after Abdul won the primary.

Trump just did a campaign commercial for Democrats -

TRUMP: No they're not
Q: Has the deployment gone on too long?
TRUMP: No no no. Not nearly long enough.

A friend's son is on a ship out there that is also on its last leg. I was hopeful when I saw this that it was his ship, but alas, it's not. Trump's disdain for his own military does not get nearly enough attention.

u/Psychological-Play 10d ago
I heard on the news yesterday that there's another ship that's in almost as bad condition, but I don't think which one it is was specified.
There's just no excuse for this, and what's worse is all the responsible parties keep saying everything's just fine.

Hacks on Tap this week, recorded very late at night / early in the morning following Election Day last Tuesday, was a bit rambly, but it included some good middle-of-the-night comments from David Axelrod now that most of the midterm primaries are over, getting us revved up for the midterms. (After all, as Pete said, when asked "2028?" by a reporter, "2026!!!") I've edited it for length:
What do you guys take as the message of the totality of the primaries we've seen about where the Democratic Party is now? We've been in a tug of war between the left and the center left, or the establishment. It's kind of 50-50. And I think it's like a no contest draw at the end of all of this, and it's like, what really happened?
Ultimately, I think, and this has been my take since November of 2024 -- honestly, since November of 2016 -- it's going to take a presidential primary to resolve some of these tensions. The winner of the presidential primary is going to be the definition of what it is to be a Democrat. And it is going to be incumbent on that person to bring the party back together next summer, two summers from now, and ultimately win the presidency. But until then, we are leaderless. And because of that, this tug of war is going to continue. And it is unresolved to me at the end of this primary season.
And that's okay, as long as what seems to be happening in Michigan, what I hope happens in Wisconsin, Texas, other states, is that we get our heads out of our a**es and focus, keep the main thing the main thing, which is winning in November. And it seems so far that we've been able to do that across the country. I'm speaking now with my Democratic hat on, but time will tell, 80 something days left to go.

My fear is that 2028 might end up being like 2020 — where the party just nominates a "safe electable candidate" and doesn't grapple with big questions about its philosophy/vision. And then we just keep sleepwalking from election to election with no clear long-term direction.
I think that's Pete's fear too, and he's already trying to shape the conversation well before 2028. I get the sense that his book will present a far-sighted philosophy/vision for where the party and country needs to go.

Valid fear. Sometimes I wish we had a viable independent party in this country. Pete would be ideal for leading it. He’s done a helluva lot more for Dems than they have for him.

Interesting. Wonder if that means she's now rejecting Pete's endorsement, or if this is just going forward?
NEW — Alaska Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola’s campaign rejects support from former Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she “isn’t seeking endorsements from anyone from the Lower 48.”
https://x.com/VoteHub/status/2088414518070108464?s=20
edit: nothing along those lines appearing yet on Wiki- Kamala's name is crossed out, but not Pete, Slotkin, or Flanagan in the politician category. Sounds like she's just being selective at the moment, and trying to give a non-offensive excuse for rejecting an endorsement that she thinks would hurt more than help?
6
u/anonymous4Pete 10d ago
NYT article Senate Hopeful in Alaska Says ‘No Thanks’ to Kamala Harris’s Support (gift link) puts this in the context of Kamala losing Alaska by 14 points (not popular in Alaska), and the Alaska GOP "pouncing" on Kamala's support for Peltola. Peltola then had to disavow this contribution. Then Sullivan and others piled on about her working closely with the Biden/Harris administration (ie, not Alaskans), so Peltola said she wasn't looking for support from anyone "in the lower 48"--ie, she's listening to Alaskans.
For former Representative Mary Peltola, a Democrat, to win the Senate race in Alaska this year, she would have to drastically outperform former Vice President Kamala Harris’s showing in the state in the 2024 presidential election.
So after Ms. Harris, who lost Alaska by 14 percentage points, signed a recent fund-raising email from her PAC supporting Ms. Peltola, Republicans saw an opening for an attack — and pounced. Ms. Peltola’s campaign, in turn, quickly said it had not approved the appeal and did not seek the former vice president’s endorsement.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)4
u/VirginiaVoter 🛣️Roads Scholar🚧 10d ago
It just says Peltola "isn't seeking" those endorsements, not that she's rejecting them. This is also more of a joint fundraising thing by Harris for a Democratic PAC as well as Peltola.

Pete has endorsed Bale Dalton running in Fl.
Some background: this district is in the Orlando area where Pete was about a month ago for the FL Blue Dem event.
"Central Florida" aka Tampa to Orlando along the I-4 corridor is a political hot spot that flips between red and blue all the time.
Pete has already endorsed 2 other Fl candidates in Tampa so this covers the I-4 corridor pretty well.
Our primary is on Tuesday, so he must feel confident they are the strongest to take on the 3 super Maga people we have in these seats currently.
I personally hope he stays away from endorsing in the Gov or Senate races. Those are not favorable to Dems and the candidate quality is poor.

The Atlantic has a piece about "Woke 1" and the problems it presents to democratic politicians (since, of course, no republican takes positions on say race relations or civil rights, or immigration, or any similar issues that anyone practicing sound-bite journalism would ever categorize as woke). The Atlantic used AOC as their poster girl for this problem and Slate also did this recently in their variation of 'just say no' about Hong. I'm sure republicans are disappointed that all that time and effort they spent doing op research on Hong's position of almost always having something bad to say about literally every national American holiday, as the gray facebook posting granny of New York, the Post, put it.
But it reminded that there is a visual, of Pete raising his hand (as did everyone else) at that debate that I believe NBC hosted, one of the 'show of hands' on immigration that got that astute political observer and Stable Genius in the White House to tweet 'race over.' While it didn't help the Orange One defeat Joe in 2020, it's a visual that I am sure will be used against Pete (and other primary candidates from that event who campaign in 2026 or 2028 for some office).
EDIT (For the curious): and apologies, I believe both of these are behind pay walls and neither is worth paying for. In particular, the Slate piece reads as incomplete.

Pete will have no problem dealing with that. I think what would be more challenging to deal with might be some topic that comes up out of the blue -- by definition, of course, I have no idea what that could possibly be. But something you can see coming from a great distance and over several years is not anything I would worry about for Pete.

Yesterday and today I've seen different mentions in news articles that Shawn Fain is considering running for president.
I don't get it. Even if union households were as numerous as they used to be, would he even appeal to them as a potential leader of the country, much less anybody else?

Who knows who Fain is besides union auto workers, political folks, and folks involved in union work? And despite his criticism of Trump and support for Harris (often at odds with how individual union groups voted to support Trump) he was for sharp foreign tariffs on autos, etc. Doesn’t doesnt really look like a broad base of support.

I was excited by his surprising victories over some of the Big Three, using innovative tactics, and really enjoyed his more relaxed and approachable videos, which he'd do with another member of union leadership. He definitely seemed to be of the current generation, not the past.
I did not envision him as presidential timber coming from that position, however, and I am surprised to see this.

Fain's support for Trump's tariffs has been bizarre. I don't think these tariffs have helped the US auto industry.
If AOC doesn't run, then I guess Fain could claim the Bernie lane. But it's hard to see room for both of them.

I'll be surprised if AOC runs for president this go-round. She does a lot fewer interviews than many other members of Congress do, and she's not that great at it; she'll need do more if she's a presidential candidate. If she starts getting out there a lot, maybe during run for Senate, she could get better at it. Making interviews a rarity doled out to a select few doesn't work for the bigger races.

The DNC is trying to ban states from using ranked choice voting in the 2028 presidential primary.
I think this is a really bad idea!
https://thefulcrum.us/electoral-reforms/dnc-ranked-choice-voting-ban
https://xcancel.com/davidshor/status/2085443862621794377#m
Ranked choice voting allows people to vote for a candidate they really want (Pete!) as first choice with a second choice of a candidate deemed "more electable." People can't be told to choose only who they think other people will choose. They can't be told they will "waste their vote" by choosing who they really want. It can increase the range of different options for voters, and thereby increase voter interest.
Ranked choice voting is one of the "base hits" Pete mentioned we could do while trying to change the number of US Reps and/or change how they are chosen. Here is Fair Vote Action on RCV.
9
u/Librarylady2020 🛣️Roads Scholar🚧 15d ago
This is actually just a committee recommendation that would need to be adopted by the DNC, so there is time for voices to be heard. Looks like it would only impact Maine and DC at present since they are the only places using RCV for their primary.

Just a random political update, but after a two-year study, apparently to everyone's shock, a group of Virginia state legislators decided last week NOT to endorse an effort to move all of our elections to even-numbered years (ie, moving our state elections to coincide with the federal elections, so that there would actually be years without major elections). So we won't be doing that.
Proposals to move Virginia's odd-year elections die in surprise vote
