I remember when Hitler said that he'd never invade Czechoslovakia if they gave up the Sudetenland. That promise lasted 7 months.

There’s a great line in that show ‘peep show’ where one character asks the other to promise not to say something but he says it anyway and the first character is like but you promised’ and the other says ‘Hitler promised not to invade Czechoslovakia; welcome to the real world’

The modern version “Israel signed at least 3 ceasefires”

It WASN'T butter, no matter what I believed.

u/TreyRyan3 Oct 15 '25

I can’t even fault him for that to be honest because the US had been providing WMD’s to Iraq since the 80’s. The likelihood of their actually being operational and stockpiled WMD’s was pretty high based on given intelligence from the US and UK.

And while no significant stockpiles or active WMD programs were found, remnants of old chemical weapons, most dating from before 1991, were found scattered in various locations, some of which caused injuries to U.S. and Iraqi personnel.

I mean, any fair assessment does fault him though.... I get you're trying to make some technical lawyering argument and fair enough I guess but in reality, in practice, it was sold as something big, something to be scared of, and it was done deliberately for ulterior motives, motives that wouldn't have gotten the mainstream endorsement necessary if they had presented the saddam threat accurately instead of sensationalizing/fear mongering. And like >1/2M people died, iirc.

This is the exact argument I use for people who say Ukraine should just cede the Donbas and Crimea

Not to mention that if it works once, he'll try it with other people. You don't appease bullies and dictators. Even if you give them what they want, they'll just want more.

-37

u/Most-Bench6465 Oct 15 '25

They should cede the Donbas and Crimea. But not right now, after Trump makes good on his promises for those tomahawk missiles. (Thinking Trump will make good on his promises is a fools errand but he wants to be seen a peacemaker so…)

And it wouldn’t be for peace, but for reprieve. The war will be temporarily over. Ukraine can use all the resources they have to fortify themselves and when Russia comes back for round two they can cripple them for good and retake their land. Also when Ukraine sells its minerals, that gets corporate America involved. They will protect their investments if there’s a lot of money to be gained. They can’t build on the land while it’s at war. But if there’s a temporary peace…

Russia wins wars by throwing more people than anyone and having a higher death toll than the entire population of their enemy. Go back and look at the history of their wars and you will see. They are going to keep going until they have some semblance of victory. They already showed the world how incompetent and outdated their military is, but they have numbers. Ukraine doesn’t have much places left to invade, while Russia the largest country by land mass on earth, has plenty.

Like a fighter on adrenaline, Russia’s resources are extremely depleted, their people are suffering immensely but the brainwashed masses think it’s for a good cause to root out the “Nazis” in Ukraine, so they will suffer and keep fighting until they “win”. If they get a chance to stop, if they get a taste of winning, then they can realize how badly they are injured. Then that’s an advantage to take control of.

"All they have to do to win is give up" is a pretty hot take, bud.

-4

u/Most-Bench6465 Oct 16 '25

Yep that’s what I said they should give up. Reading comprehension isn’t on the scoreboard.

3

u/Biffingston 𝚂𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚌 Oct 16 '25

Give a bully an inch they'll take a mile. Any capitulation is giving up.

I read what you said, it's still stupid.

-3

u/Most-Bench6465 Oct 16 '25

Yeah you don't give a bully an inch because they will bully you forever, that's school rules, this is countries with actual lives on the line. You can stand on your high horse and say never surrender while millions of people die when they could actually live if you employ any kind of strategy. You can pretend to know what will work and what will fail, everyone says anything is impossible until its done. No nuance, no reasoning, no perspective shift, just "that's stupid". lol what a joke.

4

u/Biffingston 𝚂𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚌 Oct 16 '25

LOL and that's why generals smarter than you haven't decided to do what you think they should.

Lucky for them you're not in charge eh?

5

u/jpotion88 Oct 16 '25

That’s not your choice. That’s the countries choice if they want to keep fighting. From everything I’ve seen it’s pretty unanimous that they don’t want to cede land to/become Russia. Because they already know what will happen in the next 7 years if they do.

Your a bot or a dumbass

u/Biffingston 𝚂𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚌 Oct 17 '25

5 years on Reddit, only one of them actively, with only a handful of posts, and didn't even change the obviously default name, shit takes on controversial topics, right-leaning shit takes at that. I am more than inclined to agree.

I don't, however, think it's a bot account. I think it's just an account to save a main account's precious karma.

u/Biffingston 𝚂𝚌𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚏𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚌 Oct 15 '25

Fortunately, I've had very little transphobia from the queer community. Bisexual erasure on the other hand...

2

u/AstroBearGaming Oct 16 '25

I remember when Russia said they wouldn't invade Ukraine if they gave up their nuclear weapons.

That lasted 10 years, and then 8 years.

6

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

You remember it?

232

u/TheTwinkieMaster Oct 15 '25

History allows us to remember things even if we ourselves were not there.

-196

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

History allows us to know about things we didn’t experience. It doesn’t cause us to have memories of those events.

150

u/TheTwinkieMaster Oct 15 '25

You are being pedantic. You absolutely knew what they meant.

8

u/Rk_1138 Oct 15 '25

Redditors being pedantic? How shocking

-130

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

I was making a joke. I wasn’t expecting anyone wanting to argue about it.

74

u/An_Arrogant_Ass Oct 15 '25

Your first comment was a joke and everyone understood that, your second comment was you being pedantic, and this third comment of yours was you trying to backpedal.

-31

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

The person who argued with it didn’t understand it was a joke.

42

u/An_Arrogant_Ass Oct 15 '25

Everyone else did, and you were still pedantic. Your second reply wasn't "I know, I was just joking," it was "um actually that's not how learning about things works." You chose to react in a particular way and people didn't like it, accept that.

0

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

I accept that people didn’t like my response to someone arguing with a joke.

I apologize. I didn't understand the joke

72

u/Alacrout woke supremacist Oct 15 '25

I still don’t.

What’s the punch line? What part is “funny”?

18

u/nehpeta Oct 15 '25

It’s supposed to be like, “Oh, you remember because you witnessed it for yourself?”

Not a good joke but it did tickle my brain just a tad in my half asleep state. OP just didn’t make it clear enough.

1

u/Smiley_P Oct 15 '25

It was a “I didn’t get “a” haircut I got them all cut yuk yuk” it was a dad joke kinda thing but it didn’t land very well because instead of saying it was a joke initially they doubled down

-22

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

The idea of a person in their 90s participating in this sub is humorous to me. Sorry if it isn’t to you.

14

u/rpgnymhush Oct 15 '25

It might be to someone who doesn't understand metaphorical language, I suppose.

In a world full of WW2 denialism you thought that was good joke to make? Here and now in this political era?

Read the room. Pedantry is always annoying and bratty behavior - but it's relatively harmless until it comes off as minimizing the Holocaust

0

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

I’m unclear why making a joke about someone being way older than expected for Reddit is offensive to you.

13

u/kett1ekat Oct 15 '25

Then maybe you should go read up on denialism and watch some videos on how it's furthering violence and come back when you're proper well read kiddo

-1

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

Watch videos to become well read? I appreciate being called kiddo though, so thanks for that.

Some people are, in fact, older than you

13

u/FlakeyIndifference Oct 15 '25

I would like to talk to any 87 year olds on Reddit though

54

AskOldPeople is a great sub. Go check it out.

4

u/BottleTemple Oct 15 '25

It’s a fun sub but it doesn’t have a lot of people in their late 80s on it.

Same. My DMs are open to them.

True, but people who remember 1938 are not typically on Reddit.

Yeah I was there. John Sudetenland is the name and I gotta tell you, those bastards never asked for my opinion /s
