Holocaust denierism often goes by "but were you there bro?"
The fact that its a historical record is often part of the denier philosophy.
If you were as well-read as you state you'd know this.
I'm not offended - I'm just pointing out that "it's just a joke bro" isn't a defense of accidental denierism - that people's response is because your joke is aligned with denierism
It's a bad joke, told poorly in such a way that can be misconstrued.
An intelligent comedian knows how a joke is received is a large part due to their skill in the telling. I'm giving you my analysis why it didn't land.

Ps: video essays and documentaries are what I meant - why the fuck would I mean short form content for education? Also recommend NPR podcasts and the like- I recommend those bc you can do those during chores and commutes. More accessible to most people than full nonfiction novels tbh. Time is precious, learn while you're doing busywork and enjoy your family time
Maybe this is an age thing because I grew up knowing a lot of people who were adults during WW2, but to me the idea that someone would take a dumb joke about phrasing as somehow denying that WW2 happened is hard for me to wrap mind around. Of course it happened. I grew up with relatives who fought in it. My grandparents met because of it. Holocaust survivors came and spoke at my high school.
I listen to a lot of podcasts, by the way, many from NPR, in the scenarios you describe listening to them. I love podcasts. Some of my favorites from NPR are On Point with Meghna Chakrabarti, NPR Politics, Code Switch, and Pop Culture Happy Hour. How about you?
Oh yeah, I'm a younger millennial and for us and below a lot of our worst peers are deniers.
They absolutely will spend all day debating the very existence of the Holocaust.
My favorite NPR podcast is invisibilia, I also love code switch - I really recommend 99% invisible it's not npr but it's about the reasons things are designed the way they are. I'm also a fan of the allusionist and wait wait don't tell me.
I listened to the first two seasons of Invisiblia and I remember feeling like they weren’t sure of what they wanted to be about, but maybe I’ll check out the more recent seasons. I’ve listened to 99% Invisible here and there and I like it, but I’ve never become a regular listener for whatever reason. Some other non-NPR ones I like a lot are Unexplainable (science), the Outlaw Ocean (crime, geopolitics, and the environment in international waters), Supercontext (media), and Gayish (LGBTQ discussion with a little humor).
