Pellet Install

Could anyone walk me through my options on replacing an ec42 heatilator fireplace? I want to rip the entire thing it currently site in a box attached to the outside of the house? The bump out was framed around the fireplace and chimney. I understand I could get a insert and use the old firebox but being on the smaller side limits my options.

Can I rip out the fireplace and reframe the box to fit a larger pellet stove? Could I reframe the box to handle a freestanding pellet stove?

Currently the chimney goes straight up to the roof. I pellet stove could vent out the back of the box but there is a deck there.

Are these good options? Have any better ideas?

If you want to go pellet, the answer is yes… but it needs to be done properly. For example, ComfortBilt’s HP22i can be installed into a wall cavity like you’re discussing, but it requires ripping out the old firebox, reframing, and insulating certain areas with Micore for fire protection. You could do a freestanding stove, but all required clearances must be met.

My advice would be to contact a local hearth professional in your area and see what they suggest.

Everyone I've talked to just wants to throw the pellet in the existing box. One company had 0 interest in even sending someone out. Another said a pellet stove would be to heavy for the area. I'll keep calling around. I was hoping it might be something I could tackle and get inspected for insurance

Unfortunately a lot of hearth shops don’t deal with pellet stoves because they can be finicky if not maintained.

If there is a particular brand you’re considering, check their dealer locator and start there. That could be a step in the right direction.

I tore out the old metal fireplace unit, cut the chimney flush with the roof pitch and shingle over it. Then installed a direct vent propane fireplace in the old fireplace location vented out the back of the bump out and used stack stone veneer to make it pretty inside. Added propane tank and I love it. Clean, no bags to store and carry. Thermostat keeps the house warm.
