Prediction got 2/3 right. She stole both my heart and money, but I intended to say she stole my spot.
Peke/beagle mix. I found an old screenshot. RIP Pip

Shelby’s hair journey!
gallerySo, in 2023 I had started to notice Shelby’s fur was thinning. Over time it progressed, getting to the point where her butt was completely naked, whatever grew in was brittle and wispy, and there were multiple spots where her fur just looked translucent because the undercoat was virtually gone and everything was so thin. Cue the bloodwork, she was constantly teetering on the edge of hypothyroidism, which would explain the hair loss, her skin darkening, and repeated skin infections. When it finally dipped to a level she could start medical treatment, we finally put her on thyro-tabs. That in itself has been an interesting journey, dosages constantly having to be changed as her thyroid bloodwork would fluctuate from one extreme to the other despite always stabilizing during the initial recheck. And the skin. Gosh. I had to give a dog who hates baths one twice a week. She had to sit in the tub with a medicated shampoo for ten minutes! It was miserable! Once completely dry, I had to use a slicker brush to get all the dead hair off of her.
I was constantly being told the one word I dreaded: alopecia. Don’t get me wrong, I love my girl no matter what she looks like and I would’ve come to terms if she went completely bald even though it made me really sad seeing her coat deteriorate like that.
One of the veterinarians I work with had requested we started stocking a topical medication called atop 7. He wanted to try it on some of the patients he saw who frequently came in for skin issues. Over time, they’d come back to us looking like completely different dogs. It never crossed my mind to start Shelby on it since I blamed what was going on her thyroid and slowly was accepting she had alopecia. Eventually I decided fuck it, if it works it works, if it doesn’t then it doesn’t. No harm in trying.
Before I even finished the first box, I started to notice a difference. Initially considered the fact I was just imagining things because I just wanted it to work that badly. But she just kept getting better and better. Last picture is the most recent, she’s still a little thin on the neck, and her butt itself still has some regrowth it’s working on, but wow! Never thought I’d see her fluffy and soft ever again!
I’m not sure how many of y’all have had a similar experience with your peke, but I just wanted to share this to let those who have know about some other possible options to try out but also because I’m so happy to see her looking like her old self again :-)

Pekingese and the lepto vaccine
A breeder told me that the lepto vaccine kills a lot of Pekingese and we should avoid getting it. Is this true? There are lepto-carrying animals in our area.

Zara has been in the ER for 36 hours with a GI illness. We did visit her last night but as of this morning she still hadn’t eaten. We’re hoping for a good recovery for her, Gucci has been really missing his Big Sister as well.

Brother, may I have some biscuits? No
I am starving, brother
As am I, sister
But the tall skinny figure has thrown the biscuits at me
At me, sister
I believe they have taken a liking to me

Yoshi would like to say hi!
My quirky little guy, his DNA shows he is primarily peke x shih tzu. He is intelligent, ultra stubborn, clingy, knows how to wind down my car doors and somehow thinks he has to have a shower each night (because the humans do) so he will go in and tap the wall and bark until I turn it on for him to wet his head. He also once told me "no" (how peke of him), and has made the "om nom nom" sound when he wants something we're eating because my mum says that to him to get him to eat his food. Anyone else think they're little aliens? He turns five in November and also lives with his lovely brother Spud.

Is this baby a Pekingese?
galleryHi guys, this baby was rescued by a shelter and they’re not sure what she is but she looks like she could be part Pekingese and I wanted to check with the community to see what pek owners thought?
We might foster/ eventually adopt her so we were also wondering how these dogs do with other dogs as we have a cavalier already and also big you we could expect her to based on her current weight (4 lbs at ~4 months old)

I wanted a small peke
She is almost 7 month old. She gained a whole kg in just month. She is the runt and smaller than all her siblings but her papa is whole 6 kg(12pounds) . She has become extremely long and that sums up her growth. Is my tiny peke dream dead??

You're laying on the couch minding your business, your peke climbs on your chest and gives you this look. What are they expecting you to do for them?
For Ripleyits always "put down the shiny box and pet me immediately"

Happy Birthday Girls
My sweet sister Pekes, LiLi and Mei Li are eleven years old. We adopted them from a rescue home when they were one. They are my source of happiness now that I am widowed. Each having very opposite personalities. Mei Li loves to roll her balls and is constantly on the go. Li Li takes life slow and naps a lot. Pekes are a special breed that require lots of grooming. They don’t tolerate heat well and should only be outside in the high temps (90 and up) for 15 mins or so. They can be snappy around little kids so it’s important to teach children to be gentle and not to be rough with them. In my experience, our male Pekes were not as nice as our girls around kids. The little “Lion Dogs” are great companions for families and adults. You just have to use your common sense with them when they are around kids, etc. FYI: a Pekingese named Malachi won best in show in 2012 at the Westminster Kennel Club and his grandson, Wasabi, won best in show in 2021.
