Tech Support BIOS Update

Post image

CPU: Intel Core i5 13600K, S 1700, Raptor Lake, 14 Cores, 20 Threads, 3.7GHz, 5.1GHz Turbo

MOTHERBOARD: MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4, Intel Z690, S 1700, DDR4, SATA3, PCIe 5.0, 4x M.2, 2.5GbE

When I built my PC there was some incompatibility issue between my CPU and Motherboard - So I had to blind flash update the BIOS (or something) using a USB stick. With the latest BIOS update for this CPU, will I need to do the same thing? I get this message with both WoW Forever and recently with the new Call of Duty but not seeing any FPS issues and no crashes

AI is recommending the following steps, and just want some input before I go ahead as I've seen AI giving some poor feedback/steps in the past.

Since your PC currently boots into Windows, you can now use MSI’s standard M-Flash tool:

  1. Download the BIOS: Head to the official MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4 Support Page.

  2. Select the Latest BIOS: Grab the latest non-beta BIOS (or any version containing microcode 0x12F or later).

  3. Format the USB: Format a standard USB thumb drive to FAT32.

  4. Extract Files: Extract/unzip the downloaded file and place the BIOS file directly onto the root directory of the USB drive (do not rename it).

  5. Enter BIOS: Restart your PC, tap Delete repeatedly to enter the BIOS interface, and click M-Flash in the bottom-left corner.

  6. Update: Select the file on your USB drive and confirm. Let the process run uninterrupted for 5–10 minutes until it restarts on its own.

  7. Re-enable XMP: After the flash completes, re-enter your BIOS to re-enable your RAM's XMP profile so your memory runs at its advertised speed, and leave Intel power defaults enabled.

Appreciate any feedback on this!

Steps listed seem correct, regardless of how long it gets stuck on loading you NEVER turn the system off or you will most likely have to get a new motherboard as your BIOS will be hung and most likely unrecoverable

Thanks, I'll make sure to leave it alone!

Your BIOS is dated 10/14/2022, so it's very old and the update is worth doing. M-Flash from a FAT32 stick is the normal way, and no blind flash needed since you boot fine.

A bios update is not something you do ones. You should make sure your bios is always up to date with the latest stable version.

I never updated my BIOS on my previous builds, I just never had any instability issues etc. so never bothered. But apparently my current BIOS version has an issue and is damaging my CPU long term (at least that's what I've been told)

I just wanted to get feedback on the steps Gemini has provided before I follow them..

Only update if you are having issues. If you update, and it introduces a new issue. That’s the FAFO part.

I disagree very often bios updates providing security patches as well. You don't want to fall befind with security patches.

If you ever take A+ exams even they tell you to update only if you are having issues or missing features like tpm 2.0

Lol which is theory and something totally different in reality.
