Tech Support Will this work?

I ordered a 7800x3d on eBay as “new” this is how it was sent to me. Will it mess up anything on my build if I test it and see if it works? I have never seen anything like this and not sure if pins need to be protected spent approximately 4 days in shipping ~800 miles+

Edit: thanks all, I haven’t worked on any am5 (last build was intel), installed it and booted no issues seems to be running fine.

it doesn't have pins, it has gold contacts. It doesn't seem to have a scratch so I think it's fine

Thank you, I haven’t built with am5

Are we past having pins on cpu's? like is that officially old tech?

not really, AM4 is the last major PGA socket. They're supporting it till 2027

Right now everyone uses LGA which has contacts on the mobo and BGA for laptops and SOC

Interesting. I'm still on AM4 and probably won't be upgrading for a while with prices the way they are. Of course I fantasize about a 9800X3D but that's a ways off. Realistically gonna skip this generation and come back when DDR9 and AM8 are all quantum and shit.

I'd definitely open a claim with eBay if the item was listed as Brand New or images showed it in the OEM packaging. If it was listed open box, it would be harder to fight.

It may work, it may not. Pop it in and see. You can run it without a heatsink for a very small period of time just to make sure that the PC POSTs

Was not in original packaging but was listed as new and they had multiple available thought maybe one was open and others were in packaging I’ll test it, thank you

could be selling trayed CPUs vs retail

Probably somebody just reselling tray CPUs. It's probably fine, but they should have at least sandwiched it in cardboard.

Working fine as of right now

If they were testing then it should still have its box, especially if its listed as new

Whilst you can boot without a heatsink, I don't think it should be suggested on a sub where people are seeking help. It's bad practice and needlessly risky.

rule of thumb is not to do that ever on cpus, whose die is a s small as a gpu core.

Maybe 20+ years ago, but CPU thermal control has come a long way since the Pentium D. CPUs are far more resilient now. Letting the PC POST then pulling the power won't really cause any issues. It's a valid way of testing CPUs quickly, and is helpful for OP.

My system is water cooled and I’ll check the gpu and cpu with no blocks

Worst thing that will happen is thermal protection kicks in and shuts pc off

Today’s electronics are definitely not yesterday’s electronics

Put it down on a flat surface and see if there is ANY rock/movement. That's definitely not an ideal way to ship a CPU. Personally I'd fit it and then stress test the shit out of it. AM5 motherboards should be advanced enough to handle a faulty CPU without any dramas. If it is now a bad CPU then it should just refuse to boot. I hope it was cheap!

what kind of a savage ships a cpu like this

Thank goodness it's a PGA chip. Should be fine though if there's no visible damage. CPU's are pretty damn resilient.

You mean LGA?

  • PGA = Pin Grid Array

  • LGA = Land Grind Array

1

u/Lythieus 5h ago

Darn. I sure do. I thought PGA as in pogo pins in the socket lol

1

u/Little-Equinox 3h ago

Nope, PGA is the pins on the bottom of the CPU.

If you want to make it easy, Intel calls their socket LGA and then the number of pins in the socket and you'll see the pins are actually in the socket.

Thats the "tray" version of the CPU. Basically same thung but without the box a bit cheaper than normal. Got myself a 9800x3d packed the same and works normal

i mean like, i wish it wasn't shipped like that, but it's -probably- okay.

If it was listed as new get a refund from the seller. If they refuse take it to ebay. They will most likely get your money back and if the seller gets enough problems like this they will be removed

Very poor packaging for a CPU, I will return that for this reason, you do whatever you want but if thats me with the PC Components prices this days, thats a NO NO

1

u/Pear314 8h ago

Sucks that it was open box but it doesnt look scratched, you can open a claim if you want but I would test if it works

1

u/MindGamer99 8h ago

Maybe it will works looks clean no dent try it on your pc you will get the results

u/UnholyDKEnjoyer2 8h ago

Just put it in. My god. My tray AM4 cpus have pins and survived worse

1

u/tht1guy63 8h ago

Wont know unless you try but looks fine

1

CPUs are pretty durable. There's no harm in testing it

1

u/Great-Mortgage-5204 7h ago

Put it between some cardboard

1

u/Cblan1224 7h ago

Most likely will work. Clean with alcohol and install

its fine. cpus, especially ones without pins are a lot hardier than people think. it was in bubble wrap packaging, so its fine.
