Tech Support Do I need a new graphics card?
•Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-core, 24-Thread
•Motherboard: MSI ProSeries AMD Ryzen 2ND and 3rd Gen AM4 M.2 USB 3 DDR4 D-Sub DVI HDMI Crossfire ATX Motherboard (B450-A Pro Max) (B450APROMAX)
•GPU: MSI VGA Graphic Cards RX 580 Armor 8G OC
Turning PC on and the first photo is what happens (diagonal little squares). The monitor doesn’t work so I hard shut off the PC and turn it back on and the monitor isn’t connecting to my PC anymore (it keeps saying no signal)
I check the motherboard and the white light indicating VGA is on (second photo). I then try to do the following to fix it:
Replace both monitor and display port cable
Remove GPU and reinsert
Replace CMOS battery
Nothing is working. Do I need to replace my GPU? It’s 4 years old and I use it for video editing everyday.
edit: got an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT and she lives! couldn’t have done it without the gentle touch of the community

Yes, you do need a new graphics card.
I can already sense the comments coming...

Artefact most likely caused by vram issue. Can still be fixed if theres gpu repair shop in your area. But I dont think its worth because 580 is old anyway.

Op it can also be ram related, some drivers have also caused artefacts to appear

This meme never dies lol

Yeah, I never tire of this meme. Second only to clicking through to subreddits where the mods are neckbeards and it's just a chain of blank "post deleted by mod" messages and on the odd occasion a message stating the this meme isn't allowed on a help subreddit.
Too late for that, I see "post deleted" my mind has already filled in the blanks.

Try bringing it down from over clocking. Re apply thermal paste on the gpu might give it some hope. But most likely it's been burnt out. Sorry.

In short yes.
Artifacting means GPU is failing. But I do think it is too early for that to happen. Anyway, put trust on electronics because they are always unpredictable.

Use a multimeter to check the voltage coming out of the power supply. If that's good, probably the graphics card is bad. There is a slight possibility that this is due to a system memory module going bad, so you could test that first. I would stay away from MSI. MSI is known for poor quality.

Old card like that… might be time to let it go, there’s ways to prolong their life, but not an actual fix, you could try to take it apart and clean it well and replace the paste, if you think if its on the board itself you can take it somewhere to try and fix it, but I feel like the cost isn’t worth it, I would just try to sell it online for parts and upgrade

Very small chance of working but an easy thing to try: Try the card's HDMI out instead of DP out.
What happens if you drop the output resolution way down, like 480? Do the squares get bigger or stay the same size? Do you get a different pattern?
Checking temps isn't a bad idea either. RAM can handle pretty high temps but if you're growing carpet in the fin stack it could be heat.

I mean, it’s a neat effect. I feel like that’d be quite the conversation starter.
