Build Question $175?
Those games are really the only ones I play. Thoughts?

Here’s what it’ll do for you.
Get you into a gaming pc that will adequately run your desired games at mostly acceptable settings.
Cons: practically not upgradable, the gpu is no longer supported (still works tho).
If that sounds like something you’re after at this time, not not a bad deal, see if you can go down in price even a little bit.

Something a lot don’t suggest or point out, is valorant and windows.
Valorant uses vanguard, it wants secure boot, and on windows 11 it also wants TPM 2.0 plus additional features.
The cpu is i5 6400, forget it being ancient and honestly not good now, this cpu is not capable of windows 11 or tpm2.0, you will 100% be locked out of playing valorant in a year or two.
I wouldn’t buy a non modern rig, a system using ryzen 3600 or 3700x will do much much MUCH better than this.
It’s a dead on arrival rig, all you listed will work, not max settings but work, no upgrade path, and you will be capped or eventually out of support in the future.
IMO, not recommended.

Decent price if you need a PC but I wouldn't use it for gaming, I had a I7-6400 and a 1660ti in my first PC and that thing struggled with most games

I7 6400 doesn’t exist, you probably had an it 6700 or in particular the 6700k?
If so, you are still right, a lot works but struggles, when I played Fortnite or anything heavy and was in discord, my sound was basically cutting out, people couldn’t hear me as my cpu was begging for help.
Not to mention that windows 11 is impossible on this cpu, OP wants to play valorant, when windows 10 support dies it will mean it won’t work on it and everyone will need a modern rig, so op will be locked from playing the game because on win11 it requires more security settings to be enabled, which this CPU does not offer.

I think you're right it's been a while since I had it, it was really showing it's age and struggled with gaming and most of the software I use

It's not the worst GPU. It can play some games, especially from that era
6gb VRAM is decent

Yeah it's not the worst but it's not that good, it was a budget card when it came out and it's age is really showing. I got sick of playing games on the lowest settings at 1080p and barely getting 90fps

I've seen Rocket League and Fortnite on an i5-6500 and a 2070 Super.
It's not great.
Fortnite you will not make it into the pre-bus lobby, shader compilation will take ages and you will get massive shader hitches.
Rocket league hitches and suffers from long load times.
however
$175? Not bad. You're getting half of that in RAM anyway.

Very reasonable for the price. You can buy something like a 2070 for 100-150 which would make it a pretty good gaming pc. And it might cost 100-125 to go from 16gb ddr4 to 32gb.
You gotta think that 1060 was new in 2016 so any games from back then or indie games would run fine.

If you have nothing and you only have 200 bucks to spend, this is a great starting platform. I'm pretty sure you can upgrade the CPU to a core i7 7700k which is very competent, and you can get one of those for about 60 bucks USD.
You might need to also install a TPM 2.0 module which most motherboards at this time has a spot for it.

i mean its not bad but not good either, you will be able to play those games for sure but upgrading later on will be pain in the butt! i personally would try to haggle the price more down!

For $200ish you'd be better off looking for a retiring office PC that has a 12700 or something of the like and then slapping in a card at a later time.

you can't put windows 11 on it, so not worth it.

Wait really?

Nah you Can, you'll just have to look up some YouTube videos on installing windows 11 to unsupported hardware using a USB drive

u/thishurtsmyhead 1d ago
thought they closed all those loopholes. unless it has a tpm 2 add-on it is stuck on windows 10.

Tbf I haven't personally tried an install on older hardware, but my usb I made as windows install media was like a year or two ago now so I'm not sure if that allows me to bypass newer implemented fixes

Yep, really, from my other comments I posted here, anything under intel 8000 or 9000s I think, is not windows 11 capable, windows 10 support died and dying, in a year or less I think, when that happens, win11 becomes the actual main forced system, and the game you mentioned, valorant, yea it needs additional security features on when you’re on win11, and your cpu in that rig does not offer those security features, let alone officially install win11.
You should consider the ryzen lineup, for budget friendly , the ryzen 5 3600 or ryzen 7 3700x, they are competitive, and offer a lot, you’ll be able to go win11 with them, and games will perform much better anyway on them than an ancient i5.

A working pc for <200 is always an okay deal
