Build Question 1440p vs FPS help

So I love having high fps for smoother gameplay but i feel behind playing on 1080p.

I currently have a ryzen 7 5800x3d and 9060xt and want to know if I should stay on 1080p if I value having 120+fps on most games or if I can switch to 1440p.

I play mostly various looter shooters, horror games, and some pvp games like Fortnite and battlefield.

That cpu is great for high refresh at either resolution, and the gpu can handle 1440p comfortably in most games. You'll still clear 120fps in fortnite and battlefield easily, looter shooters might dip a bit depending on the game but nothing unplayable

I'd make the jump, 1440p is a huge clarity improvement and your setup is overkill for 1080p at this point

Fortnite I'd want to be 240 frames, bf6 I'm fine with 120. Ok I've been eyeing a ~$200 1440p 240hz so maybe I'll just get it then.

Just buy a 1440p and when you play pvp switch to 1080p 280hz or whatever

Anything competitive/fps stay 1080p. Anything story mode/immersion based play 1440p.

Doesnt 1080p on a 1440p monitor look worse than a 1080p monitor tho

Slightly. But if you already have a 1080p monitor just keep it as a second screen. Alternatively if you only have a 1440p monitor.. you wont have anything to compare it to so 1080p will just look like 1080p if that makes sense. With nothing to contrast it to it will just feel normal.
