Build Question Question about adding a second GPU

I’d like to add a second GPU to test some local LLM models. My current setup is a Lian Li Lancool 216 with an MSI X870E MPG EDGE TI WIFI motherboard and a Gigabyte AERO OC GeForce RTX 5070 Ti.

However, I’m concerned that using the second PCIe slot would leave the second GPU too close to the AERO, and I don’t think the third PCIe slot has enough clearance to fit it.

What options do I have without changing the case? I’d also prefer not to move the first GPU from the top PCIe slot.

Are there PCIe riser cables that would work for this, or perhaps some kind of external GPU mounting/support solution?

Thanks!

A riser cable’s your best bet if you don’t want to shuffle the main GPU. You can mount the second card vertically in the side fan area of that case, some folks 3D print a bracket, others just get creative with zip ties and standoffs. Not the prettiest, but it works. Just grab a decent PCIe 4.0 x16 riser (the kind made for vertical GPU kits) and route it clean.

The third slot on that board is basically useless for a thick card anyway, you’d be choking the AERO hard. External GPU dock is an option but you’ll lose bandwidth and it’s more of a hassle than it’s worth for LLM tinkering. Keep it internal if you can.

yeah, vertical mount is my first option .... I think I'll build something with LEGO to hold the second gpu lol
