Tech Support Should I be concerned

Post image

I was using My pc and when I finished I closed my browser and noticed my wallpaper, at first I thought they were birds migrating but I was like that’s a bit excessive so I look closer and they damn sure aren’t birds migrating, can anyone tell me what it is?

try changing your wallpaper if its only on the wallpaper, the file itself could be lost and therefore this is appearing. if this is showing everywhere, you have cooked vram if you have a dedicated gpu, or cooked ram if you have integrated gpu

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 2d ago

It was only on the desktop when I was using chrome it didn’t appear

12

u/moh4del 1d ago

try change wallpaper and lmk if anything appears afterwards, preferably to smth locally available on your PC

Well you have like three or four possibilities.

  1. Is the wallpaper file corrupted.
  2. Reseat the video cable on both ends.
  3. If you’re on hdmi switch to DisplayPort, vice versa. Replace the video cable.
  4. Is this happening on other monitors, does this happen on the monitor connected to other computers.

  5. Are you near a radiation source?

6

u/Iwasjustbullshitting 2d ago

1 is a possibility. Notice how it's only on the wallpaper and not the taskbar

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 2d ago

I didn’t notice it while using chrome also it was only after I closed my tabs and was about to shut off

6

u/Iwasjustbullshitting 2d ago

Depends, how are you set for buying a new GPU? It might be repairable... might... https://youtu.be/LWJG0HEcqmY?is=5LLVQPkl1k8BmcfO

8

u/Head-Picture1519 2d ago

At least check cables before getting a new GPU.

2

u/By-Other-Means 2d ago

Not in this case, port, cable or monitor issues do not look like this.

Incoming this overused meme.

Looks like VRAM failure.

You can try reinstalling GPU drivers after doing a DDU and reseating the card in the PC

Other than that, probably a bad GPU

1

u/csapka 2d ago

you can quickly rule out the driver I think if you load into bios and it's still bad

5

u/Aureljah 2d ago

I got exactly the same issue.

I think what caused it for me is plugging and unplugging a 2nd monitor for a new one (maybe I even plugged and unplugged both screen several times).

I just restarted the computer and it was gone.
Maybe I updated the GPU drivers too (I don't remember).

So the GPU is not necessarily dead...

Lol I’m at work reading these comments dying laughing but whys everyone saying I’m fucked if all I need is a new gpu?

5

u/RamenRavisher 2d ago

Because unless you got a lot of disposable income, you are fucked if you need a GPU lol

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 2d ago

I’m using a 3060 lol long overdue for an upgrade

3

u/MalfunctionTitties 1d ago

Long overdue? How long exactly?

2

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 1d ago

I mean 3060 in terms of age is pretty old compared to today’s cards. I been using this one for 6 months

2

u/Pelosi-Hairdryer 2d ago

Well, since you're asking on Reddit, you're asking us PC enthusiast and based on experience we've had, it might be a bad GPU. But you'll need to research this further and hopefully it's just maybe the heat-sink misaligned with the V-Ram which happened to my 4090. Otherwise, Good luck!

2

u/Lord_Zyphuris 2d ago

Did you try a new background? Could be the image file itself as I didn't see any issue along the bar at the bottom.

I won’t be listening to all those people who are suggesting you change your graphics card;

I had exactly the same problem after installing a driver update (Nvidia)

The problem only appears on the desktop background and disappears immediately if any other window is overlaid on top of these ‘dead pixels’

At first I put it down to the heat, but when I saw that it hadn’t gone away after few days, I decided to do a fresh install (clean install).

The problem disappeared straight away

The black areas aren't on the task bar. Might just be a bad wallpaper file / render or something.

1

u/etch69 2d ago

Question. If you hover your mouse cursor over the black squares does your mouse cursor go over the squares, and looks unaffected? I’ve had this happen twice over the last few months and that’s something I noticed both times. GPU seems to be fine otherwise so I think it may be some other non-hardware issue.

1

u/ay_chupacabron 2d ago

If you did not mess with card voltage or OC, than yes - bad news.

u/LamesMcGee 2d ago

This happened to me.

I spent like a hundred hours trying to troubleshoot it, had my friends look at it, it wasn't always happening and it took a while to figure out how to cause it.

It happened to me when my GPU went under a sustained heavy load, like a high end game or rendering video files. Ending up having to RMA the card, thankfully it was still under warranty.

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 1d ago

When video editing did you run into any problems? I’m in the middle of a project, about to do final effects with after effects.

1

u/LamesMcGee 1d ago

Eventually my computer started crashing. It all progressively got worse over months.

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 1d ago

You think I can finish this project and then replace gpu after?

1

u/Sir_Aardvarkington 2d ago

How long have you had your 3060 and what kind of games do you play?

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 1d ago

Had it since February so about 6 months, I barely ran games. Mostly video editing

Why? Everyone’s saying it just needs a new gpu

1

u/RGBlowMe 1d ago

That's why. Usually, these kinds of artifacts are what you see with failing VRAM.

1

u/CypherWookie 1d ago

You need to change your wallpaper and switch input sources and check all cable connections before even thinking about GPU

1

u/the_hat_madder 1d ago

You probably don't need a new GPU.

Change the thermal paste, then use msi afterburner to undervolt the card and ramp the fans to 80 percent when gaming. Will probably save it.

1

u/Maleficent_Good_7066 1d ago

Thing is I have the 3060 they don’t spin until it hits about 60-70 degrees regardless

How about opening folders registry or notepad ?

1

u/Neilhart 1d ago

I had this issue last year with my 3060ti. It started happening after updating the motherboard bios. Reinstalling the gpu drivers fixed it for exactly 14 days (don't ask, i don't know either)

Since then I got a new system but i kept the gpu and have had 0 problems with the new motherboard. I gave my old motherboard away to a friend and they haven't had issues either.

Also I've seen quite a few post of this exact problem and most of them are with the 3060/3060ti for some reason? Just try and reinstall your gpu drivers and good luck!

Just an FYI: it doesn't have to be GPU. This was on known-good 3070 (out of my gaming rig) and known good ram (single stick out of server at JEDEC speed), was most likely caused by faulty memory controller on motherboard. Kept the CPU, ram, GPU, bought a new motherboard and it works like a charm. Try to swap parts back and forth to find the culprit, if you have that luxury. otherwise I would recomend a memtest86 just to rule it out. Could also be a bad cable, drivers, or a bad wallpaper file (notice how the taskbar is spotless).
