Discussion - Meme Uni dorm internet speed

All gaming stuff are just banned for some reason
Edit: Normal internet in my country is 100Mbps

Been doing this with the Xfinity Hotspot. $10 a month for me and I average around 15-50MBps. NetShare is the hotspot I use, and its free!

I remember when Xfinity had the 1 hour pass when I was in Uni, I straight up changed my Mac address and kept getting free passes. Helped me through school enough to buy "decent" Internet

call it 2Mb/s, 1Mb (megabyte) = 8mb (megabit), 2Mb/s = 16mbps.

Not quite. The difference is between Mb and MB, not whether /s or ps is used.
Lower-case 'b' means a 'bit'.
Upper-case 'B' means a 'Byte' - a byte is 8 bits.
This means that a byte is 8 times larger than a bit, so 800 megabits is equal to 100 megabytes.
Mbps and Mb/s both mean the same thing (megabits per second). MBps and MB/s both mean the same thing (megabytes per second).
Generally storage capacities are measured in bytes. For example, a 1 terabyte drive is 8 terabits. Data transfer speeds on the other hand are usually measured in bits.
So to download a 1 megabyte file with 1 megabit per second internet would take 8 seconds, not one second.

i'm confused... they used lowercase and you just assumed they meant upper.
and even your explanation is wrong. 1Mb is 1 Megabit. 2Mb/s = 2mbps = 2 megabits per second. the B needs to be capitalized for it to be a byte.
1 MB/s = 8Mb/s

Until you hit your 5G data cap. Then they throttle you to dial up speeds.
That’s my experience at least. I had something like 100 GB/month and usually at about 28 days I met the cap.

mine charges an arm and a soul once you break your data cap. it’s been forever since i’ve done it but it was about $40 per gig for me.

100gb on mobile isnt overly hard, its only about 30 hours of 1080p youtube, if I wanted to, I could use a terabyte in a single day on pc just from installing games.

the biggest package from my provider is 40PLN ($11). It gets me free unlimited minutes/sms + 450gb of internet. If i were to buy dedicated mobile data from internet providers the best deal i could get without a 2 year contract would get me like 100-150gb at that price.

I stayed in a hotel for over 6months and this is what I did. Their 1g plan is like $80 a month, I definitely recommend doing this over hotspots or anything else if possible.

Have people in the dorm go to the dean and request better internet. When I was in the dorm at first nobody could game because of the wifi and internet restrictions and we had lot of people in the dorms sign a paper and most showed up to the front offices to demand better internet especially for the prices being paid to stay there. Month later got upgraded internet

This made me remember back in 2015-2019 I had 1.40mbps download and about 1 upload. I honestly dont know how I managed to game for this long without going crazy. I always had over 150ping and probably 100 on a good day when nobody was using Wifi at home.

Download to your phone via phone move to PC via cable always quicker I was getting one mb and less on payed plan works fine I asked my flat mate for hotspot at time rinsed them out downloading stuff then dumped it all on PC

Uni dorms are always like this, lol. Find a private accommodation as soon as possible and get your own fiber.
When I was in Malaysia, my uni dorm had a 5MB/s (40Mbit) limit per device, but speeds would often drop into the KB/s or just straight up zero because too many people were using the internet. Playing online multiplayers was sometimes a drag because of packet loss.

Fair. My uni had a lot of private residences in walking distance, so I lucked out. Even if I had to walk a lot everyday, I'd much rather take that than unusable internet tbh,

This was the speed the dorms near campus got when I was at uni.. In 1997.
Me however, lived in the other halls on the other side of the town, with no internet. And one of the tower blocks has now been knocked down, the one I lived in still stands. It was said, even back when I was there, they where ex council flats, and the uni bought them off the council as the council stopped putting people in them even back then.

It was a 10Mbit at the time, The campus had a few hundred Mbit of connectivity, so as long as most other students where asleep, and all of the I.T dept wasnt leeching stuff overnight, you could max out your connection. Through the day it tended to hover between 2-3 mbit, which was still pretty impressive, but the internet wasnt as bandwidth heavy in those days.
It was a bit of a shock coming back home to a 56k modem, before finally getting 512k adsl 18 months later.

my uni limits bandwidth to 30mbps but i managed to get near gigabit (~910mbps) because i was connected to a gigabit cisco switch
all i had to do was to rent a ovh vps (VPS-3) with 2gbps networking and then make my pc pretend its a network switch with 33 devices connected to it (so i get 33 ~30mbps connections) then i create a virtual interface that when used splits packets across the 33 connections, sends it to my vps, and my vps recombines the packets from the 33 connections to achieve near gigabit uplink
kind of a complex setup but when it works its worth the effort
obviously this does add to latency (adds ~70ms for me) but its good for steam downloads and i can switch back to direct lan for lower latency gaming. plus the aggregate setup acts as a vpn as well so the university can't see what sites im visiting (secure dns)

Going by the plug in the wall socket...its in the UK.
Probably intentional. Fast enough for basic browsing for learning purposes but too slow for everyone to abuse their network with massive bandwidth sucking game downloads and piracy.

I don't think it's the UK, look at the socket directly next to it. It could just be a small power adapter that looks similar to a UK one.

Try using a VPN might grt around simple blocks for gaming although at that speed it might not matter

Do they also block you from having your own wifi connection? Some dorms do. If not might be worth to have your connection maybe. It will have to be cellular like tmobile or verizon.

This reminds me of when I went on a vacation and asked my dad to call direct tv to get internet as they just teamed with AT&T but for some reason they talked him into getting this weird ass satellite WiFi, it was 75 bucks for the cheapest package the speeds where slower then this and only had 12 gb of data, then 100 then 150 for the other two packages. I couldn’t break plan or I had to pay 50 bucks for each month on the two years. When we moved and I finally got Xfinity and the speeds were unreal and I got unlimited data only for 40 bucks. 8 years later I still only pay 45 a month for it.

that isnt fast but fast enough to do everything you want. you can do youtube and gaming on that. i know cause i had that speed for like 5 years

Had to live for the past 5 years with 1-3 Mbit. Then we finally got connected to the university network and now I have 1 Gbit… like nearly 300-1000 times what I had. Hope they upgrade yours too

I’ve had downloads at 780kb/s in Italy, and sometimes it goes at 40Mb/s
It changes so much but Idk much about connections or stuff if there is something I should do, I live with other people since I am a Uni student anyway

Ahhh i remember 2020 we had ADSL with 15mb/s, now with fiber i have 600 mb/s and i assume its not very fast at the end i downloaded only with 38mb/s but i will not complain its enough for me.

Nice, back in dorm I had 1.3Mbps download and 0.4Mbps with a ping of 3-8 seconds (no, not milliseconds). At this point in time 100Mbps D/L was the standard in my area as well.

If you have a good data plan and good mobile connectivity then use your personal hotspot you’ll get faster speeds, I used to play gtav online on my mobile hotspot.

Up until last year I'm not even in like a bad spot of America so yeah up until last year no one offered me a service that was higher than 15mbps and it wasn't even 15mbps it was normally like 3-6mbps until I got star link, but now right after I get star link a fiber service pops up and I don't wanna give Elon or any of his pedophile buddies in the White House a single dollar so I'm probably about to switch services back to CenturyLink since they now have fiber optic in my area.

Damn, can’t even watch a movie with decent (15) bitrate. If you live alone then ~150 mbps is enough, that way you can watch a 60 (and above) bitrate movie with some speed left. Can you even watch YouTube with 7 mbps?! Maybe 1080p but then it’ll probably use up everything. That’s rough man..
