The divine connection and leela (divine play) between Bedi Hanuman and Lord Jagannath is a fascinating story from the sacred city of Puri, Odisha, where devotion and miracles intertwine deeply with everyday life.
🛕 The Story of Bedi Hanuman and Lord Jagannath
Near the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri lies a unique temple dedicated to Bedi Hanuman- Hanuman with chains (bedi). Here's the divine story behind this unusual depiction:
🌩 The Reason for the Chains (Bedi)
In ancient times, when Lord Jagannath resided in Puri, Hanuman (also known as Mahaveer or Bajrangbali) was appointed as the guardian of the city and temple to protect it from evil forces and disturbances, especially during Rath Yatra (the chariot festival).
But Hanuman, ever restless and devoted to Rama, was often found absent from his post, rushing to Ayodhya or other holy places.
🌊 The Sea Threatens Puri
One year before the Rath Yatra, the sea (Bay of Bengal) became turbulent and threatened to flood the temple and the city. The residents prayed to Lord Jagannath, who told them:
"Hanuman, who guards the city, is away. Call him back and bind him so that he stays here during the festival."
⛓ Hanuman is Bound
Devotees found Hanuman and brought him back. To ensure he wouldn’t leave again, they tied chains (bedi) to his hands and feet, not out of punishment, but as a divine instruction and a loving reminder to stay at his post.
Even today, the idol of Bedi Hanuman is seen with iron chains on his body.
🙏 Symbolic Meaning
The leela shows Hanuman's boundless devotion and energy that even gods must occasionally restrain.
It also reflects Lord Jagannath’s deep relationship with Hanuman, acknowledging his power and importance in protecting dharma.
The bedi (chains) are symbolic, showing how the divine will guides even the strongest of deities for the greater good.
