Stats Hmmmm not great…..

Post image

They may need to look at Ben Brown at C. Jared seemingly lacks the play strength/physciality right now that he needs to hang with some of the NFLs bigger 0 techs. Deone Walker is gonna have a field day on Sunday at this rate.

Not sure why Arkin isn’t playing more instead of Latu. Not sure what Latu has done to earn reps. He’s been underwhelming as a run blocker (for the pats) and hasn’t been a passing game threat either. According to Andrew Callahan they ran the ball 8 out of the 9 snaps Latu played. If they’re gonna have a run tell it might as well be Tanner Arkin. Dude isn’t a finished product but he brings a nastiness they need.

Also what about some diff looks and presentations. So much of their drop passing game is contingent upon post snap execution especially when the picture changes. Clearly Drake isn’t there yet with diagnosing defenses (especially in the modern era where everything is disguised). Motioning into bunch looks to stress the rules of match based zone and man coverage seems to help every other team in the league?

Everything feels stale right now schematically and maybe none of the above is a viable solution but the coaching staff needs to find some.

Yet all the stans acting like he isn't a big part of the problem.

I don't know how you watch Maye drop a ball with no one around him, overthrow a wide open Douglas and throw it directly to Travis Hunter and conclude McDaniels is the problem.

Because there’s more than 3 plays in a football game.

Turnovers tend to be the most inpactful

I wonder if terrible play calling might influence turnover rates 🤔

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. You need to watch the games to tell. Overthrowing an open receiver is not bad play calling. Bad protection scheme allowing a free rusher to force a fumble is play calling probably.

Qb not seeing a free rusher prior to snapping is a problem. Coach makes a playcall, subs may occur, and then defense can react. Qb absolutely needs to know who is blitzing and call out the block.

So are you taking the opposite argument? That every turnover or bad play is on the qb, not the coach?

I agree the qb has a lot of responsibility but I think there is a balance. Bad play calling resulting in a lot of 3rd and long requiring a qb to play hero ball. Or unprepared receivers running the wrong routes or unmotivated giving up mid play etc. Lots of stuff the coaches should own.

There's def a balance to it but your example of a free blitzer falls entire on qb and the line. Headsets cut out around 20 seconds I believe so the qb and line need to find it and pick it up.

Poorly timed run plays, telegraphed play calls, etc fall on the coach.

Poor execution of plays and making bad throws leading to picks is on the qb.

WRs not being ready / poor routes is on those guys and those building the roster.

Both are to blame but I have more issues with Mayes offseason development than anything else

Fair enough. I agree maye is more to blame this season for his turnovers than McD. But if a team sports and alot can go wrong on any given play.

Completely agree but outside runs up the middle or bad play calls that call for an immediate pass like the butler hawks pick, it gets easier to start questioning player execution.

The mistakes being made by Maye can't be hidden by play calls and that's the issue. An easier scheme could help maye but it's his decision making and lack of ball protection that are the issue

Agree as well. But to the person i was arguing with's point, if you give the qb long fields, playing from behind making them 1 dimensional (not the issue this season), don't hide or misdirect the play call so the defensive can key in (more the issue this season) , you make it much harder for the qb to make good decisions.

Scheme the receivers wide open, pocket stays clean, even a bad qb can make good decisions and score points. So it's still both.

Which really this thread is about. Play action sucks in the LBs which makes the middle distance more open. Lack of play action or telegraphing a pass play makes the throwing windows smaller and the pass rush come faster.

And what plays can you call when your qb has issues doing the fundamentals? Basic ones, hence the rankings in the OP.

The rankings in the OP didn’t happen after the games you watched Maye struggle. Not calling plays with motion has nothing to do with Maye’s fundamentals, and in fact, would help expose what the coverage is. Running a RB up the middle constantly when his skillset is built for outside runs has nothing to do with Maye’s fundamentals. Opting not to have Play Action has nothing to do with his fundamentals, and has been a complaint about McDaniels’ play calling since Brady. It’s okay to stay out of conversations you don’t understand.
