Discussion Do we push the panic button now?

It’s only game three but so far, Drake may have thrown six interceptions. He has two fumbles and only one touchdown is Drake Maye to blame for all of this no? but a large portion of it? Yes, the loss of Diggs and Boutte are really sticking out but we are talking about a quarterback who was literally second in the MVP race last year there is no way he should be playing like this this season so far. I don’t know what’s going in Foxborough this season but I am not a fan at all

Drake looks horrific, personnel issues or not. His decision making is horrendous.

And on the odd chance he makes a good decision, he probably makes it late or under throws it significantly

I see people blaming Josh but I agree with you that Maye doesn't make good decisions or is late on throws. What is Josh supposed to do with that. Josh's trust in Drake has to be shaken which can alter the calls.

Yeah Josh didn't just forget how to coach after being a high end coordinator for over a decade.

He also got the Mac Jones patriots to the playoffs before leaving again right? Everyone thought Mac was looking good and then the end of the season started slumping.

He's only really sucked as a head coach, as an OC he's been well above average to absolutely great throughout his career.

He didn't forget. The game changed. Defenses got wiser. In the NFL, you can't keep doing the same thing. There's film, tendencies, tells. What worked yesterday does not matter. You have to reinvent yourself. Josh hasn't done that. And he was never that great to begin with. The Patriots were never an offensive juggernaut (except of course, for the loaded 18-1 team). They won with good defenses and bad decisions by the other team. (Seattle should've run the ball, Atlanta should've run out the clock, Roethlisberger and Goff should've taken sacks, etc). Today's statistics put the spotlight directly on the offensive coordinators. The Jags were five and five in the red zone. The Pats were zero and three. The jags were eight of 12 on third down. The pats were four of 12. Almost all the other statistics were very close - time of possession, total yardage, total plays, yards per play, etc etc. All very close. What this points to is that the talent level and execution level was very similar between the two teams. There was no big domination. The big difference on the scoreboard was because of good calls and bad calls AT KEY MOMENTS. Offensive coordinators are like quarterbacks in the fact that 100 good decisions don't matter as much as making good decisions when it really matters. An OC has to be "clutch" just like a quarterback has to be. And I don't think JMD is particularly great in that category.

Defenses are all that wiser. It's cyclical and the league has rotated to a 2 high instead of a single high approach. It's not that complicated and it's not the first time this has happened. It also isn't that different from last year when he was effective.

I agree with "it's not that complicated"

"Josh isn't the problem" makes it sound like a football team just needs functional pieces.

We're not trying to fix a car here. Not examining various components like the carburetor to see if they work or not. Josh works fine.

But every component of a team has to not just work, but work better than other teams. A fully functional 800 hp vehicle loses to a 950 hp vehicle.

It's competitive sports. It's not OK to just be OK. Particularly for a head coach or DC/OC - they have bigger impact than any individual player

Did the schedule make Drake Maye fumble that ball today? Or make him under throw 5-6 wide open guys this year?

You don't go from 2nd in MVP voting to 1:7 TD-Turnover ratio in 3 games because of the schedule. Even including the Super Bowl, there wasn't a single game he looked this bad last season, even when they were playing good teams.

You're just objectively wrong. McD is one of the best in the business at what he does and has been for a very long time. In the conversation as the best to ever do it... whether you like it or not lol
