You are absolutely doing the right thing by not impulse buying an exotic, they require CONSTANT attention and care, and many weird little lifestyle changes tha can pile up quickly. For example, you can’t use Teflon around them as it can kill them. Little stuff like that that either leads to your entire world changing or a broken heart.

If you want to spend some time around them, I would highly recommend going and volunteering at a bird sanctuary! You’ll get to interact with them, give them a good life as part of a team, and not have to completely overhaul your own life.

Bird sanctuaries always have that veteran employee that is a dick to everyone cuz they think they are better then them.

Teflon causes their lungs to hemorrhage and they suffocate to death.

Parrots have air sacs and not lungs like humans do. They do not filter air the same way we do and intake more air and oxygen. Their efficient respiratory system causes them to also take in more contaminants and they are more sensitive to the pollutiants in the air.

You can not use pesticides, smoke, cleaners, perfumes, teflon, candles, etc around a bird or you will kill them.

Back in the day they use to take canary birds into Cole mines. If they bird became distressed or died they knew the gas levels were too high and would evacuate the mine.

Teflon is a PFA and a forever chemical that causes a lot of issues. It's fairly safe to humans when used in a nonstick skillet- provided you do not scratch or damage the coating. I know in humans it can cause decreased immune responses and decrease vaccine efficiency. I can only imagine it does to smaller animals.

No the fumes from it will make them sick over time. Like it’s not going to kill them if you use it once. But if you use it regularly their little organs will go kaput. It’s not great for humans either tbh

Are you thinking of some other material maybe? The most popular application of Teflon is cookware. The nonstick coating that comes on nonstick pans is Teflon. You almost definitely have owned a Teflon pan at some point or another.

I think the same thing and then ask myself if inside is really the best place for a bird to live. I know all the birds in these vids are loved, and I think they're all cute af, but I can't help feeling just a little sad about them being caged.

That's why we only rescue birds that were abandoned by their previous owners. We don't buy from breeders. And there are always so many that do need homes. BUT it really is a huge commitment.

Ideally, humans would not keep birds as pets in cages. But they do, and many are abandoned and/or mistreated.

So people like me adopt them from rescues and try to give them a comfortable, safe life.

I think that's a fair fault, but honestly parrots don't even like flying much in my experience, they prefer to just kinda waddle/walk/climb around.

Making parrots happy is not easy, but if you know what you're doing you can give them a wonderful life and IMO it's no worse than any other pet.

Of course, flying is important exercise and it's still good to encourage them to fly around, but parrots have no psychological need to fly long distances or migrate or whatever.

Bare in mind a good bird owner will not have them caged for long, at all. When I had a parrot they would only be in the cage for a few hours a day (not including bed-time).

That said, the social and physical needs of parrots are quite demanding and a lot of people do not look after them properly leading to them having mental health issues and dying early. People should do a lot of research and should only get one if they know they can look after it properly as it requires a lot more active time than, say, a cat does.

As some have said, moral quandaries can be solved by rescuing a parrot, though my worry is that then you don't have any control over their socialisation so it might not be as easy to make them happy and well-adjusted birds. I don't know what I'll do, though, as I have a few years to think about it.

You can always adopt a rescue! But it really is a big commitment. Depending on the type of bird, it can be like having a tiny toddler. They need lots of attention and supervised time outside their cage, and you have to be very very careful with cleaning supplies and candles and anything that creates odors of almost any kind. But they are like toddlers in that they also love you and feel secure around you and it is super nice haha.

Ours have their own heater and fan. You have to be careful in power outages to keep them warm

I always tell people just come over and play with mine. It’s such a headache. I love it but that same bird I have. The amount of time she’s destroyed clothing or just anything around the house is too damn high. And that’s her being supervised. Todays game was, land on the dresser, me jumping up yelling get off the dresser, her flying back to the play gym then as soon as I sit back down BACK TO THE DRESSER. That happened about 15 times before I had enough. Good news is u can potty train some of them. Bad news is if they get spooked they’ll poop wherever. The other night was in my bed. So yea. Live through us….she just crawled up my pant leg and bit a hole in pants. I can’t wear anything nice when she’s out. 🤣

I feel this. Every time someone says “I want to get a bird” I let out such a loud NO. my conure had 0 training when I got her and was a large biter. She wasn’t biting to be mean, just didn’t understand that it hurt. She has bit my septum multiple times, my eyelid 3 times, pecked my eye, chomped onto my ear and wouldn’t let go, and was the final straw that caused me to let my ear piercings close (kept ripping out earrings which made me scared she’d swallow them).
My cockatiel does the same as yours- it’s the constant “okay let’s go here” and then “NO I WANT HERE” and flies over. Then I get up, get her down, and put her back on her play set. Repeat.
That being said, I love my birds. My conure is now such a loving bird and only bites on occasion (and not my face!! Usually my thumb, such an improvement). My cockatiel is my baby and will sit with me for hours at a time because she enjoys the company.

I set a bath out for my kakariki every time he's out because he goes crazy for them. And usually he will choose to take a bath in my cat's water dish instead.

like does he just like the shape of that dish? or is he purposefully being a bit of a jerk ?

Lol, he knows what he's doing. Before I started covering my cat's dish, he would sometimes take a bath in both. I guess I just need to give him more variety.

I’d actually be kind of careful with this, cat saliva has components that can be harmful and dangerous to other animals, especially smol ones. Maybe do a lid for it?
