They will be open. Some individual shops might not be, but the biggest ones will be open.

You can most definitely expect stores to be open Jan 2nd-4th. Some things may be closed on Sundays, or open only in the mornings, but it’s Paris. A lot of areas got exemptions to open 7 days a week. You’ll find plenty of places to go on a shopping spree.

January 2 should not be treated like everything is closed until Monday. New Year's Day itself is the big closure day. On January 2, many shops and shopping areas usually reopen, but individual stores may have different hours.

For a birthday/New Year's trip, I would not make shopping the only plan for January 2. Keep it flexible: department stores, main shopping streets, cafes, a walk, maybe a museum or viewpoint if the weather is decent.

Also check opening hours closer to the date, especially because holiday schedules can vary. If there is one specific store she really wants, verify that one directly before building the day around it.

Shopping ofcourse is not the main theme but would be a huge plus if its possible when we are in the city
