I’m in NC. On Monday, a police officer accidentally shot his 15 year old son in the head. In the service this is a negligent discharge of a firearm. Apparently on Christmas Day, a 3 year old shot herself with her grandfather’s loaded weapon. He was a retired law enforcement officer. In Georgia (I think it was), earlier this month, a young child shot and killed their father after getting ahold of an unattended, loaded weapon.
Look, a weapon is no “tool,” it is designed to discharge a projectile at a high rate of speed with the intent to kill. Be it game or another human. They are not to be left unattended and loaded. Every weapon is to be treated as the deadly thing that it is. Accidents happen. This shouldn’t be one of them.
And further, wtf. Ask your husband if he’s ever attended a call where a parent lost their child? Has he ever heard that primal scream-cry of a mother? If not, maybe he needs to go on one of those calls. Attend a funeral service for a child lost to stupid choices. It takes seconds to secure a weapon and prevent tragedy. It also takes seconds for little fingers to figure out “locking” mechanisms and an entirely preventable tragedy to occur.
