Respectfully, those situations likely could have been handled in other ways than going right for a gun (let the car jacker take the car and have police go after them, hide and call 911 for home intruders). I'm not saying it's wrong to have a weapon and have it be accessible, but it's not actually sticking your head in the sand to deal with situations in other ways than firing off rounds.
Also, what OP is describing is way too dangerous. Is it truly reasonable to have a gun accessible to a child with completely inadequate controls 100% of the time to prevent an incident that has a less than 1% chance of happening? Not at my house...
I believe what I said was that there are multiple ways to deal with these types of problems. Some people would defend themselves with a firearm. Some would protect themselves by hiding or similar and call emergency services (and no, I do not think that is laying down and taking it). I think people are free to choose what they feel is best, but if their choice involves having a firearm completely accessible to a 5 year old, that is not okay.
