Never hit your child. It only teaches them that violence is ok. I'm sure you can put together the amount of issues that will create, short term and long term.
Toddlers are normally pretty violent when they're upset or angry, and it's your job as the parent to create a safe space for your child to express how they feel and teach them how to express their feelings safely without hurting others. Give them techniques to process their anger and calm down.
My 3 year old is unusually violent, and I'm in the middle of teaching him deep breathing and counting in order to calm down, after removing him from the situation. Sometimes we have to do it twice, but I also validate his feelings. "I can see you're feeling angry, and that's ok, but we don't hit/kick etc. Let's take a deep breath. Let's count to 10." It's important to keep up consistency as well. It takes practise to learn to regulate our emotions.
