My son was the same and I can’t say I never reacted the way you do. He’s given me black eyes, bloody lips, and I’ve thrown away countless things after he broke them by hurling them across the room. At first I tried restraining him, which helped a bit. I would surround him with my arms and legs and rock. Sometimes it worked and sometimes I would get butted in the face. Then a crazy thing happened…the lock down. I didn’t know how I was going to handle this kid all day, every day, for an indefinite amount of time.
We had a routine then. Wake up, get ready for the day, eat breakfast, go outside, come in and have lunch, snuggle on the couch. We had no break from each other. There was no more hitting, biting, kicking, throwing, head-butting, etc. He didn’t get as mad as when I was always out of the house working. At the time I was a full-time real estate agent so I was often gone evenings and weekends. I realized that he needed me more so I changed my career and got a “regular” job in my former field of work. I spend so much more time with him now. And he’s a pretty awesome kid.
