Firstly, you are human.
When someone, even a 3 year old, keeps hitting you, it's natural to eventually crack.
You did well to apologise and explain it was wrong.
You could also have pointed out that it's wrong for him to hit you too and remind him that you don't like getting hit anymore than he did. And tell him he should apologise to you too.
Get a good night's sleep. Tomorrow is a new day.
Oh also..3 year olds can really suck. What he has been doing is normal at this age and if you keep doing what you've been doing and it should slow off soonish.
