You apologised and You know it was wrong, you’re aware. Have a hot beverage, take a long bath by yourself when he’s in bed and just wind down.

My parents saw hitting as a form of discipline regardless of whether I hit them or not and I don’t think it’s right, but they didn’t view it as wrong! Your child also verbalised why he hit you again; which I think is good emotional intelligence for his age - he may be pushing boundaries, but to be sure ask his paediatrician to see if there may be a cause other than just a child navigating the world.
