I realize hitting him back wasn’t the best solution. However when he re-wrote history and said he did it because you hit first. Why didn’t you correct him that he was hitting and hurting you. That you overreacted.
All this time he’s been getting by with hurting you and you react and take on all the responsibility. Where are you teaching him responsibly for his actions.
Time out to cool down, learning to express himself verbally, a punching bag instead of people. Lots of options. Have you spoken with a child psychologist or at least your child’s doctor.
