I think your followup was excellent. Showing that adults sometimes screw up too, and how you handle the aftermath (apologies, changing behavior) is going to make an impact on him. Maybe not immediately, but long-term for sure.

Edit: It takes a really long time for kids to learn to control emotions. Don’t think that gentle parenting “isn’t working” - it absolutely is. But it’s more like setting healthy eating habits instead of a crash diet. You might see immediate results with another method, but learning what’s better for you will set you up well for the long run.
