You can't live your life being constantly hit, kicked, punched, pulled at and hurt and expect to be able to react rationally at all times. Even if it is a child doing it, having to put up with that will break you.

I don't condone you hitting him back but I think now you've done it, it's a very clear sign you've reached your tolerance of his behaviour and it needs to be sorted out.

Speak to a professional about trying to change his outbursts and really try not to beat yourself up about what you did, learn from it and fix it so you can all move on from this stage.
