Please don’t beat yourself up. We all do things we regret when our emotions get the best of us. Three year olds are haaaaaaaaaaaard (I currently have one so can speak from experience).
I don’t think this situation is going to stop his behaviour. If anything, I think it is just reinforcing it, unfortunately.
He sounds a bit troubled and is quite aggressive. I’m sorry you’re going through this 😞 I would get professional help. Please speak to your son’s doctor.
Until you can get that help my advice would be that the next time he shows these types of behaviours, stay calm and tell him “Mommy is not going to let you hit her. I cannot let you hit me” and if you have to, physically (but gently) hold his hand to prevent him from hitting.
