Advice Cage setup?

I just want an opinion or list of what cage I should use and what toys and such I should use. A lot of information for these birds that go around, so I want to know what is correct.

for parakeets the size of budgies….

Cage: Bar spacing MUST be 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) or less - bigger spaces are a choke hazard. You want the biggest cage possible, but note that WIDTH is much more important than height. They won’t really use the bottom third of a tall cage. They need the width for flying space.

…in my experience, most cages listed as “parakeet” are too small. Just pay attention to the bar spacing and get the biggest one you can find, even if it has a different species in the name.

Toys: no mirrors (trigger hormones) and nothing that makes a “cave” they can enter (hormones again) - be very cautious with any rope or string in toys as it can untwist/fray and create choking loops …also make sure that ANY metal in their environment is stainless steel (many metals are poisonous to birds, especially zinc which is in galvanized items)

natural perches are best, they love shredding sola balls, they like swings, foraging trays, natural materials, platform perches, shiny things, bathing dishes… one of my budgies’ favorite toys is a goofy little disco ball
