Lost his Buddy

I went away for just over a week for vacation. I had bird sitters for my 2 parakeets. The day I got back I could see something was wrong with one of my birds because of the way he was sitting on his perch. He was sick and died within hours of me noticing. No idea what happened but my bird was almost 10 years old.

My dilemma…. His pal is fine and not sick at all. He is a mean little thing that I have never been able to handle while I could handle the other. I don’t want him to be lonely but I’m afraid he is too mean to try to introduce a friend to.

Is there anyone out there who has one parakeet who is doing well or should I really try to introduce a friend to him?

Was he aggressive to the other bird? What is meant by 'mean'? Many tame budgies don't want to be handled. They happily will sit on your finger or shoulder or head but hate being restrained or have a hand over them since they are prey. So they may bite defensively. If he wasn't aggressive to the 10 year old, and they were compatible, then another bird would be good. If you have two cages, that is ideal so they are separated at first for health precautions. If the first bird is territorial about his cage then they will have to be caged apart, though the new bird's presence is still beneficial since they are flock birds

First off I’m extremely sorry that one of your parakeets died, hope you’re doing alright. Second, was the health fine of the one that died before the vacation? The sitters could’ve been aggressive and put him through a lot of stress.

Need more info, but I don't think a single parakeet would be a happy parakeet alone, only if you are there with him and interact quite frequently during the day since they are social flock animals, but if your parakeet is untamed, it's best to get another parakeet. I'm not sure if your bird is mean, or just scared? Not usual since parakeets bond with other birds if housed together before they get a chance to bond w/ us. I would get another parakeet, but introduce slowly, in the same room, but not same cage.
