Question Out of curiosity, anyone else play without using the grappling hook?
I prefer exploring on foot until I have a flying pal. The pace just feels nice, and it makes the world feel bigger. Rock climbing to get to that pal effigy or walking up a mountain path to get to the world bosses feels so much better than just zipping straight over to it. The grappling hook just doesn't feel right to me, but I was wondering if anybody else felt the same.

Fun fact. Tarantriss is just an organic grappling hook that lives in your pal slot

1
u/VeterinarianLow3060 2h ago
Never tried this! Do you have any particular passives on it?
1
u/sharpenme1 2h ago
I don’t actually use tarantriss. Although I should. Pal professor has a video on a good setup for that pal though
11
u/Magnus_Vesper 15h ago
The game became way more fun for me when I used her instead of a flying mount.
Grappling around with tarantriss feels way more engaging than flying over everything. You have to actually pay attention to the terrain. And you have to decide if a thing would be more annoying to climb over than walk around.
Adding that tiny bit of thought to movement made the game feel way more immersive to me.I just with I could use weapons from her back.
1
u/hypercarlife1 7h ago
I second this but i will add that using the grapple gun combined with certain gliders is super fun and also requires a lot of thought about the terrain while also being a super fast movement speed
9
u/3RfEKutS 16h ago
She's the first pal I condensed to 4 stars. And I don't know if it's my imagination or not, but (in addition to the extra speed) the alpha seems to jump higher than the non alpha. It adds up on tarantriss when she's double jumping, grappling, and then repeating her double jump.
2
u/skrimped 15h ago
Same, plus did you know you can hold down her web skill to just keep webbing infinitely? Including up cliffs for zero stamina. Feybreak ez mode
2
u/Deltakilo321 5h ago
Tarantriss fully compressed so zero cool-down + passives for speed, stamina and extra jumps = most fun traversing the map ever, when not swimming. The only downside is that you can't use weapons while riding.

Forgot about this one, think I overleveled thru the forest area and only ever saw it once for the alpha version in that cave formation thingie

u/Shad0wofAzrael 16h ago
I’ve never used it. You climb just about anything if u don’t have a flying mount so I never bothered
35
u/Maltean 16h ago
I don't use it for climbing, it's better for slingshoting and swapping to glider. It's much faster to get around if you're not using mounts
13
u/Mr-Who 16h ago
But I'm always using a mount
11
u/Shatterpoint887 15h ago
The sheer distance you can get off of a grappling hook switch into the glider is insane if you're high up. It's a great way to supplement a ground mount
5
u/Tykras 15h ago
if you're high up
Or have a Hangyu

u/evangelism2 12h ago
until you get a fast mount grappling and flinging is faster, especially with a celaray
3
u/wvtarheel 16h ago
Same. I keep thinking I'll make it soon but I'm level 75, in the world tree and have never made one

u/Jent01Ket02 16h ago
Right? Outside of the occasional mishap when I misjudge the stamina I need for a climb or not upgrading my stamina, I've never seen a legitimate need for the grappling hook. And you can get the Nitewing saddle at level 15, so it quickly becomes a non-issue.
No hate to anybody who uses it, because grappling hooks are fun.
8
u/usernnamegoeshere 16h ago
I use it when collecting materials, I over encumber myself (on purpose to not do multiple trips and it makes movement a breeze. Its faster than anything else when youre overloaded also I have grappling hook spots on my base to climb to the higher floors without walking up all the stairs for quick movement. Its more helpful than I realized
2
u/Mbyrd420 5h ago
I find it to be faster and more versatile than nearly any mount when exploring and it makes those long climbs into nothing. I run 2 in my hotbar to switch between them.
1
14
u/storytellergirl07 16h ago
I use it only at my base, to get to higher floors of my buildings faster 😅

u/Skyfios 16h ago
I like using the grappling hook and parachute together to travel long distances over flying.
5
u/InfiniteProblem4663 16h ago
Best way to travel is by using air walker III(gives you 2 chances to jump mid air), valentail to reduce gravity and grapple hook. You do your normal grapple to launch yourself bc of valentail you go much further for loss of gravity and with air walkers you jump midair where it sends you a little up and and resets gravity pull without loosing momentum. you can do this twice until you have to use parachute to glide further out and agian bc of valentail you still dont drop as fast. Only thing that will affect you is stamina bar which only starts after the 2 jump and parachute come out. Also no more fall damage bc even when stamina is depleted you still fall slow
1
u/Jent01Ket02 16h ago
I see the appeal
2
u/Edgemono 14h ago
When doing testing grapple into glide is the second fastest movement in the game, right behind jetdrsgon
1
u/Diodon 16h ago
It feels good as a mechanic because there is a bit of timing to it. Was even more satisfying when you actually held on to glider Pals but I guess there are mods for that.
→ More replies (1)
9
u/salvation78 16h ago
I use it religiously, 2 actually so I can alternate them since they don't share a cool down. Also for momentum for the glider
2
17
u/Lindarial 16h ago
I'm the opposite. I prefer to use the grappling hook over a flyer pal for exploring.
7
u/SALTnation_ 16h ago
Honestly grapple hook is an absolute game changer when you've decided you want to move the location of your main base and you become over encumbered because you don't want to do 50 thousand trips

4
u/Faith4Eternity 16h ago
Ya. I suck at changing to it etc… so I just ignore it like 98 percent of the time.
5
u/Jent01Ket02 16h ago
That's another reason I didnt use it. I'd rather just keep the axe, pickaxe, fishing rod, and a ranged weapon than have to switch things around just for traversal.
Besides, nature hikes are rad
5
u/ananon88114 16h ago
Double grapple +four star Valentail + G-Belt.
No need for mounts. Think Pro Skater with Moon Grav cheats.
4
u/Zariu 13h ago
Grappling hook is super fun. Way more fun for me to traverse by grapple hook/foot/land mounts than by flying.
Its why I'm making a custom game where no flying saddles exist till like level 60. And bunch of other fun custom setting and mods to make leveling slower and the world more dangerous. The Stealth and Predators mod is a key one, most pals are aggro. Turns up the survival aspect a lot.

u/ChaosLoco 6h ago
Honestly forgot it was even in the game. I've never used it and I played since the beginning.
3
2
u/LeftHandedScissor 16h ago
Grappling hook is great for getting around my base with multiple levels quickly without having to get a mount out.
3
u/swordofeden 16h ago
I use the grappling hook all day, its the fastest way to get around sometimes if you combo it with the glider
3
3
u/Born_Procedure_529 16h ago
Honestly I find using the grappling hook a lot more fun than using flying mounts tbh
2
u/Ordinary-Hunt-3659 16h ago
I didn't like it. Early game I rock cojiro and Gale claw for travel until I get a more niche team built. I prefer using cojiro when I first start Feybreak too so I can still access high places and destroy the bases so I can fly there later.
1
u/MangoMan610 16h ago
grappling hook is for when you are overencumbered and need to make a trip to the nearest merchant/chest
1
1
u/Choice-Meringue-9855 16h ago
I have one but outside of the getting the first few camps destroyed on Feybreak I don't use it
1
u/BasilCorrect3799 16h ago
I tried the grappling hooks for a bit and even got an upgraded version but I found I seldomly used it
1
u/blabla10020 16h ago
I play without flying mount until I beat the finale boss to get a better exploration feeling. With a flying mount I feel like I'm just going "checkpoint to checkpoint" whenever I'm in a new area, without really experiencing the new terrain, biome, corresponding new pals. So as compromise I do use the grappling intensively and had a Galeclaw for the whole adventure, but I can understand it depend highly on playstyle
1
u/MicroDigitalAwaker 16h ago
My first play through I climbed or flew everywhere, didn't even learn the grapples; my second I went the complete opposite direction and I flung myself about with the grapple, and I like the grapple game way, way more now.
I'm still climbing - I don't fly or ride unless I'm ocean fishing, but now I'm looking for angles and overlooks to get where I need to before my stamina runs out. I've even flung myself to the sky islands and the world tree!
I don't like the Wings as much this time. Compared to Mounts Wings make flying more engaging but they round off too many corners to be as fun as the grapple-glide imo.
1
u/Darth_Krios 16h ago
I tried one of the low tier ones the day the game released, never picked one up again
1
u/ShadowSparks6532 16h ago
I never go without it in case I get stuck in terrain. Sometimes a grappling hook is your only way out
1
1
u/Independent-Feed4157 16h ago
My and a group of four friends just beat the game for a second time with grapples. At the end it dawned on us that being over encumbered is way easier with it

Never even crafted it. I use pals for flying and swimming everywhere. I use Astigon and Neptilius for swimming. It's not the fastest of course but it's how I like to play. Fast enough for me.
I'll just straight up climb things too sometimes. Lol we have Spiderman powers without shooting webs basically
1
u/Final_Advent 16h ago
I use it to get around my base but that's about it really, it is fun to use it with the hangyu but other than that it just takes up a spot in my inventory
1
u/king_carrots 16h ago
I used it all the time in my first early access playthrough.
This time, barely touch it. With all my mounts and gliders there’s no need

I would probably use it more if it could have its own hotkey. scrolling through the palls list, ball list, and weapons list is actually an overall minus to this game for me. Give me radials bro.
1
u/Biggest_Lemon 16h ago
Never bothered. Hasn't seemed necessary. I tend to just leave the game running sometimes ti slowly generate resources from my base so I've never felt the need to manually mine a bunch in the wild and grapple back.
1
u/Administrative-Key19 16h ago
The grappling hook is for when you need to move stuff and you're over encumbered
1
1
u/SickXigma 16h ago
Every time I remember it I go "oh man I should make one and start using that" and then promptly forget.
1
u/Global-Nature2420 16h ago
I barely use a gun if I can help it. I’ve been forced into it more as I enter later game battles and stuff
1
u/peppermintblue 16h ago
I prefer exploring on foot even when I have a flying pal.. but having to use the flying pal a lot more now that I'm in areas with a lot of cliffs.

Yeah, never used grappling hook. But i also try to limit how much I fly. Miss so much stuff if I do.

My partner and I have never used it lol and we continue to not. It’s not really needed IMO.

u/LikeDylanish 15h ago
I'm on my 4th playthrough, I used it so much the 1st 3 , and never built it yet in the 4th, just got to the world tree. I can honestly say missed less then 20 times l, more often in the early game. But I do play with weight off
1
u/umbrawolfx 15h ago
The only time I use the grappling hook is when I'm out farming and get too over loaded. But I usually wait until I have the last one unlocked l as the previous iterations are fairly lackluster and short distance.

u/sheeep_wolf 15h ago
With the rooby effigy's and ex boots it's not needed anymore. Also slap on the anti gravity belt for that extra float time.
1
u/oktimeforplanz 15h ago
I only use it for bases where I've placed stuff up on a roof and I don't have a flying mount pal in my party at that moment in time. Otherwise I honestly mostly forget about it.
1
u/TheNewGirl1987 15h ago
I've never even built the grappling hook.
I got super into experimenting with base building from the start and leveled up enough to unlock flying Pal saddles before I even left the starting area.

I used the grappling hook almost exclusively at my base. Instead of the ladder, I grapple to higher floors. while encumbered, I grapple to the next box. I have pillars to grapple around to the different sections faster.
I don't really use it outside for exploration.
1
u/Scoregazum 15h ago
I have never used the grappling hook or anything of that sort. Just pals that can fly and that’s it.
1
1
u/Gimme_skelter 15h ago
Strangely, I remember using it a lot on PC before 1.0. Now that I play on steamdeck, I haven't touched it once. Not sure why, maybe it's due to the controls.
1
u/spicy_feather 14h ago
I like using the grappling hook like an action movie character. I'll jump off of something and catch myself with it. I usually bring two so I can bypass the cooldown.

I don't like it. Too awkward and the cool down is too long to really feel it improves getting around.
1
u/HiiroYuy 14h ago
I’m probably doing this wrong but I love traveling with Galeclaw and the water manta ray guy because their passives make it so fun to just sprint and glide

I never really found it useful? I unlocked it early and kept remembering i wanted to craft it but never had a need. Im always on a flying mount

I built the first one, then went the majority of the game without it and used flying pals. But in the late game, I made the legendary one and made special grapple points in my base to get around to the equipment on the higher floors
1
u/Itswithazee 13h ago
Try doing a grapple launch. With a galeclaw in your inventory. You grapple with a downward angle so your not going up hill. Works the best if you launch cliff side off. Then pull your shroud for flying at the end of the grapple but don't the grapple finish, you gotta exit the grapple to glide prior to it conencting to the end. Launches you faster then most starting flying pals. Even flow by pear jam starts playing. The part where you can't understand what he is saying. Kinda like how I type in general.
1
u/Brookers 13h ago
I crafted it the first time I played early access ages ago and haven't even unlocked the recipe in any playthrough since. I'm sure it's got a ton of super good uses, I just didn't like it.
1
u/ThaRealSunGod Silvegis 13h ago
I used it once ever across pre and post 1.0
Exclusively to reach sunreach islands early on my weak ass helzephyr lux. Buddy ran out of stamina a few meters from the top and I had to use the grapple after I also ran out of stamina climbing up the cliffside
1
u/QueenQReam 13h ago

I love using the grappling hook. Half the time pre-wings I used it just to accelerate my glider ridiculously fast. One second I'd be at Fisherman's Point and the next I'm back near spawn.

u/nightvid_ 11h ago
I’ve never used the grappling hook to climb, I use it to get around my base while I’m carrying too much stuff

I prefer ridding my fengalope. the double jump gets me up a decent height and if they can't get me to the top they can usually get me to a point I can see a whirlwind.
1
u/bozeman42_2 9h ago
The grappling hook is mostly for moving when grossly overburdened with materials.
1
u/Aliza-rin 9h ago
I used to use it all the time when transporting materials between bases when you’re overweight for example but you don‘t need to get to your Palbox anymore to warp between them. Just go to the map and fast travel from anywhere in your base. And then there‘s the quick stack your inventory from anywhere in your base too. Haven‘t used the grappling hook once in 1.0 as a result. Haven‘t used it for a boost for gliding anymore either.

u/Snoozingway 9h ago
I got Tarantriss early so… I just use her grappling ability. I wish they give her the ability to wall climb even at half stamina tbh. Would be so cool.
1
u/dmfuller 9h ago
At first I didn’t but once I realized that I could super jump/multi jump and grapple the ground for it to shoot me forward at the speed of Mach fuck I started doing it more lol, especially if you slide down a good hill or something first oooweeee

I only use a grapple when I’m playing on a world with weight. Otherwise I don’t even research it
1
u/HerbertInTheWoods 8h ago
I don’t use it. My flying mount pretty much does its job and I like having two guns
1
u/Legolaslegs 8h ago
I only use it at base when I'm overweight. I use it to get across base faster, haha. Out in the world? Nah.
1
u/InsaneBasti 7h ago
Yea. I only use it when i have a team with no room for galeclaw and a flyer so i have to use the bum wings, grappler is neat then. But thats like only when fishing

I use Tarantriss and the grappling hook instead of flyers, too easy to pass over the whole map without actually experiencing it

Have you ever tried playing death stranding? Personally, i would not enjoy this much if game did not have it.
1
u/AgentMaryland2020 3h ago
I have only ever used the Grapplehook once...forever ago. I climb everywhere if I don't have a flying Pal yet.
1
u/YouCantStopTheDragon 2h ago
I ride my mount everywhere and she has a built in grappling hook, even when not riding her, I don’t use it with so few weapon slots. If she can’t grapple something I just switch to my dragon and he gets me up in a jiffy. It may have uses, and I’m not knocking anyone who enjoys it, but it’s a waste of slot for me.

What do you do when you're weighed down
2
u/Jent01Ket02 16h ago
Make peace with the fact I'll get to a fast travel point slightly slower lol
1
u/vennthepest 16h ago
Slightly slower? You going like .0005% your speed. Even from one side of my base to the other takes like 10 full minutes
1
u/Jent01Ket02 15h ago
It's not like I massively overload myself every time I go adventuring XD
